We quite agree that online learning is not only convenient for students and teachers but often more

effective than traditional classroom instruction because this is a modern teaching method based on
modern technology. Firstly, both students and teachers can find online learning convenient. Many
students who cannot attend at a college or university for many reasons and want to widen their
knowledge can follow this form of learning. Indeed, they only need an internet line and a computer with
a network connection. They will get studying material through which they will do the tests, and then
they will get feedback with a brief explanation and even lecturers’ words of encouragements. Secondly,
students need not go to the auditorium and they can choose their most suitable time to study. By this
way they can earn their living and to pursue learning. Taking an example, my friends and I choose to
learn English 123 programme , the registration process is very convenient, and tuition fee with 250,000
for 365 days is rather cheap. The curriculum contents are quite rich for all levels from low to high, from
beginning, intermediate, high- intermediate to advance levels like IELTS, TOEIC, TOEFL etc.. With the
lecturers’ enthusiasm and extensive knowledge , we believe that the programme of English 123 enables
to help us as beginners study English successfully with listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. In
other words, we think that online learning is very effective. In short, with the above presentation we
strongly believe the form of online learning is convenient and effective for everybody to study. On the
occasion of the New Year 2013 we would like to express our thanks to you, our lecturers, wishing you
and your family health, happiness and success in life.

Nowadays, online learning has become more and more popular. Although we all know that it is
replacing traditional classroom instruction step by step in some developed countries, I totally disagree
with the statement “Online learning is not only convenient for students and teachers but often more
effective than traditional classroom instruction”. The reasons why I say so as follow. The first reason is
students can easily be lazy when taking an online course if they are not self-conscious. It’s because
online learning doesn’t require a fixed timetable which is compulsory in traditional classroom
instruction. Students can study whenever they want. This may be an advantage or a disadvantage
because they have to develop their own schedule and stick to it; push themselves to log on the system
every day and study self-consciously. If students lack of these abilities, they will easily neglect their
studies and be lazy to study. The second one is students can be easily distracted by many things when
learning online. Most students tend to open common social websites such as Facebook, twitter,
YouTube, etc. to update themselves on information as well as sign in yahoo messenger to chat with
friends when they are online. Once they are sunk in the information that they get from these websites,
it will be very hard for them to concentrate on their studies and they will waste a lot of time on doing
nothing related to the lessons. The last one is online learning requires a computer and easy access to the
Internet connection. However, some families share a computer and it is difficult to give students enough
time to finish their coursework on that computer. Moreover, their studies can be interrupted by the
disconnected networks. This will make them feel discouraged and they may turn off the computer
before completing their lessons. In conclusion, I don’t think that online learning is more effective than
traditional classroom instruction. Although it may be convenient for some people, it can’t totally replace
traditional teaching in classrooms. When students go to school and study in class, they will focus more
on the lessons and they can argue with their teachers about problems that they don’t understand clearly
through direct communication. Therefore, it is better for them to attend the class than to take an online
course.
