COVID-19 AND SCHOOL CLOSURES FAQ FOR FAMILIES

Q: Does the announcement by the Government of Ontario to close all publicly funded
schools include schools in the Keewatin-Patricia District School Board?
A: Yes, all KPDSB schools are closed to staff and students from March 14, 2020, to April 5,
2020. KPDSB schools included:

 Beaver Brae Secondary/Elementary School


 Crolancia Public School
 Dryden High School
 Ear Falls Public School
 Evergreen Public School
 Golden Learning Centre Public School
 Ignace Public School
 Keewatin Public School
 King George VI Public School
 Lillian Berg Public School
 New Prospect Public School
 Open Roads Public School
 Red Lake District High School
 Red Lake-Madsen Public School
 Savant Lake Public School
 Sioux Mountain Public School
 Sioux Narrows Public School
 Sioux North High School
 Upsala Public School
 Valleyview Public School

The announced closures also impact the Dryden Regional Training and Cultural Centre.

Q: Do the closures also impact KPDSB programs and sites, such as Adult Education and
Continuing Education classes, night school, etc.?
A: Yes. All Board programs are cancelled during this time.

Q: Will child care and EarlyON centres in KPDSB schools continue to operate during the
closures?
A: No, we have been advised that all child care and EarlyON Centres are closed until April 6,
2020. Please check directly with your childcare provider for more details.

Q: Will eLearning/online courses continue?


A: No. These courses are suspended.

Q: Will Co-op placements continue during the closures?


A: No. Co-op placements are cancelled during this time.

Q: Should students in Dual Credit programs attend their college/university classes?


A: No, students in Dual Credit programs will not attend their college/university classes during
the closure, however, the College may make this work available online. Watch the college
website for more information.

Q: I have Community Use of Schools permits booked in KPDSB buildings during the
closures, are those permits cancelled?
A: Yes, all Community Use of Schools permits are cancelled during the closure.

Q: I have a child in Grade 12 this year, are they at risk of not graduating due to these
closures?
A: This closure will not impact secondary school graduation.

Q: Will the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) scheduled for March 31 be
cancelled?
A: The OSSLT will not take place on March 31. Information will be provided if it is rescheduled.
At this time, the KPDSB does not have any students who require the test to graduate in June,
meaning, no student’s graduation will be impacted by the test not being administered on March
31.

Q: Will students be provided with online learning opportunities during the closure?
A: The Ministry of Education has indicated that they are working on resources that will be
available online to support student learning during the closure. We will share the resource with
families once it becomes available.

Q: My child did not bring home any additional work to complete over the three weeks of
closures (March Break plus two weeks). Will there be work they are expected to
complete before returning to school?
A: Teachers are not expected to provide students with work during these closures. Students are
also not expected to complete any assessment or evaluations during this time.

Q: Do these closures impact college and university applications?


A: We do not believe there will be an impact, however, it's best that you check with the college
or university.

Q: Will the school year be extended into the summer months due to this closure?
A: We have not received this direction from the Ministry of Education. The decision to extend
the school year would be made by them. It's too early to determine if this will be necessary.

Q: Could schools be closed longer than the announced three weeks (March 12, 2020, to
April 5, 2020)?
A: At this time, we have not been notified of extended closures. Should it be announced that
schools will remain closed past April 5, 2020, we will notify families by email.

Q: What steps is the Board taking to prepare for the return of students to schools and
programs?
A: Custodial Staff will be working a day shift Monday through Friday during the week of March
30th – April 3rd, 2020, to do a deep clean of all facilities. School buses are also receiving
extensive cleaning to prepare for students returning to class, please click here for more
information from the Northwestern Ontario Students Services Consortium. Heightened cleaning
practices will continue in schools/sites and on school buses once schools reopen.
