Task : Removal and installation of main landing gear wheel doors.

Principle/Purpose : Student should be able to identify the main landing gear doors, attachment and associated
parts, understand the installation drawing and Task instructions and develop the
dexterous skills to carry out the task as per instructions safely.

Safety Precaution :

1) Do not handle grease with bare hands.

2) Do not use excessive force to remove or tighten the bolts.

3) Keep removed items in earmarked places.

4) Ensure that all tools are removed and accounted for in the Tool Box post completion of the Task.

5) Ensure that the Trestle is locked before climbing for access

PROCEDURE :
1. Unit Servicing
A. Lubrication
For routine lubrication data refer to Chapter 91.

2. Adjustment /Test
Special Tools and Equipment :-
Rigging pins 381A or 493A
Cable tensiometer suitable for 10 cwt cable.

A. Steering system adjustment (Fig.201)

(1) Jack Aircraft (Chapter 7)
(2) Remove fairing from left side console.
(3) Remove centre floor panel, in flight compartment.
(4) Install rigging pin in cable drum on aft face of nose gear bay rear wall.
(5) Check rigging marks on handwheel assembly: with the whitemark on the handwheel at the top
dead centre position, ensure that the mark on the lower shaft stop aligns with the mark on the
inboard shaft mounting. (Fig.201).
(6) Check that tension of the endless chain appears normal.
Note: Adjustment of the chain tension is effected on installation by adjustment of the shims
between the lower shaft mounting assemblies and the spacer blocks, using the same shim
thickness at each of the four securing bolts.
(7) Maintaining the handwheel in the central position, as in operation (5), ensure that the larger
chain is equally disposed about its sprocket. With tensiometer positioned midway along the
longest cable-run between pulley and fixed block, tension cables to 20 lb.
(8) At the nose leg, remove the nosewheel steering disconnect pin.
(9) Pressurize the main hydraulic system. (Chapter 29).
(10) With the cable drum rigging pin still in position (operation 4) adjust the length of the
connecting rod at the steering jack selector so that, when the leg is fully extended (and
centralized by the self-centering cam assembly) the steering sleeve and torque link sleeve are
aligned to enable the steering disconnect pin to be easily inserted. Check connecting rod end
is in safety and wire-lock.
(11) Install the steering disconnect pin and remove the cable drum rigging pin.
(12) Screw in the adjustable stops at the handwheel lower shaft assembly.
(13) Reduce the nose gear inflation pressure to 25 lb/sq.in.
(14) Operate the handwheel slowly between full left and full right and check that the steering
operates smoothly over the full range.
Note: The stroke of the jack should be 2.86 ± 0.02 inches.

(15) Operate the handwheel slowly to full left until the steering jack reaches the limit of its travel,
then release the handwheel to enable the steering selector valve to return to neutral . Screw
out the stopbolt at the handwheel lower shaft so that it just contacts the mounting assembly.
tighten locknut.
(16) Repeat operation (15) with the handwheel turn to full right. Mod.251820, wire-lock stop
stopbolts to stop and wire-lock locknuts together.
(17) Adjust the connecting rod between the mechanical indicating fork and the steering on/off
valve so that, with the landing gear locked down and the fork lever located around the roller
on the drag stay, the valve is 0.05 inches to 0.07 inches short of maximum extension. Check
connecting rod ends are in safety and wire-lock.
(18) Check steering on/off valve operation. Refer to MAIN SYSTEM MAINTENANCE
PRACTICES Chapter 29.
(19) Re-inflate the oleo to the correct pressure (see NOSE LEG ASSEMBLY-MAINTENANCE
PRACTICES).
B. Steering system friction check (Fig.202)
WARNING: GROUND LOCKING PINS MUST BE INSTALLED WHENEVER THE MAIN
AND NOSE LANDING GEAR ARE IN THE DOWN AND LOCKED POSITION.
CAUTION: THIS CHECK CAN BE DONE WITH THE WEIGHT ON WHEELS WHEN THE
CONDITIONS THAT FOLLOW ARE APPLIED :-
- NOSE WHEELS CENTRALIZED WITH THE STEERING HANDWHEEL AT
NEUTRAL.
- STEERING DISCONNECT PIN REMOVED.
Referenced procedures:
10-00 Parking and Mooring
29-00 Hydraulic Main system

Equipment required :-
- Spring balance (Suitable for reading 1/10ths of a pound weight).
- Cord (suitable for wrapping around the steering handwheel).
(1) Ensure ground locking pins are installed (see Chapter 10, PARKING AND MOORING).
(2) Ensure that the nose wheels are centralized and that the steering handwheel is at the neutral
position.
(3) Release hydraulic system pressure (see Chapter 29, MAIN SYSTEM).
(4) At the nose leg, remove the nose wheel steering disconnect pin.
(5) Disconnect the adjustable connecting rod to the steering jack selector valve (Fig.202).
(6) Check freedom of movement of the bearing on the adjustable connecting rod, also the bearing
on the rod of the selector valve.
NOTE: On completion of the above check, position the adjustable connecting rod clear of
the operating lever.

(7) Wind cord around the rim of the steering handwheel (as shown) and attach a spring balance to
the cord (Fig.202).
(8) Operate the handwheel through the full range of movement.
(9) Check that the load required to operate the circuit through the full range of movement does
not exceed 0.75lb. The friction is to be checked in both directions.
NOTE: If the load exceeds 0.75 lb., disconnect the steering spring strut to ascertain where in
the circuit the friction exists.
Further dismantling may be required to identify and rectify the cause of friction.
(10) During operation (9), if backlash in the system is noted, check the tension of the steering
control cables.
(11) Ensure that components disconnected or removed during operation (9) and/or (10) are
reconnected and reinstalled.
(12) On completion of the check remove the cord and spring balance from the steering handwheel.
(13) Reconnect the adjustable connecting rod.
(14) Install the steering disconnect pin.
