The very concept of how humans can design and build structures of all kinds has always fascinated

me.
Regardless the size, I take buildings and structures as another form of art. It has been, therefore, my
dream to be able to design buildings that have high aesthetic values, yet still embody functionality and
practicality. Not to mention, I have always admired when great architects have to and are able to work
with a limited budget set by their clients, but, nevertheless, still able to meet their expectations and
fulfill their demands, along with a little touch of their own, to produce a piece of work they can be
forever proud of. Great architects can always channel their clients’ ideas into reality, something that I
am striving to be.
“I don’t think that architecture is only about shelter, or is only about a very simple enclosure. It should
be able to excite you, to calm you, to make you think.” This quote by one of the greatest female
architects the world has ever known has opened my eyes. Despite the practicality and functionality of a
building that people really need nowadays, a building should have its own character and able to speak
for itself. A workplace, for example, should be simple and comfortable, yet it still has to look astonishing
by the side of the road.
I was first introduced to architecture from a book by Richard Meier. I didn’t really understand the
concept of architecture at the time, but his designs amused me and triggered my curiosity in
architecture. Not until I saw a picture of the steel and glass pyramid in The Louvre, Paris by Ieoh Ming
Pei was I convinced that I want to study architecture. Since then, I became really interested in buildings
and structures, especially those with peculiar designs. The idea of beauty meets functionality never
ceases to amaze me.
I have gained quite an insight about life as an architecture student and life as a professional architect
from my mother, a bachelor of architecture, and my uncle, a retired architect. Hence, I am fully aware of
both the benefits and the risks of majoring in architecture and of being a professional architecture.
Moreover, I have been introduced to a professional architect, from which I acquired innumerable,
invaluable lessons. He has been the one who taught me how to use the tools and software commonly
used by architects to design a building, and showed me the progress of his currently ongoing projects.
Under his tutelage, I have also learned the procedure of designing a building, from taking notes of the
client’s requirements to designing and rendering, and finally constructing it with a contractor.
Despite being a science stream student, with all the dogma attributed to it, I have always been in love
with arts for as long as I can remember. As a kid, I had a good sense of proportion. Where mostly
children would just attempt to draw complete body parts when assigned to draw a human, for instance,
I would attempt to draw a human of balanced proportion. I have always been thinking about how I can
use my resources as a science student but can still apply art in my life.
I chose University of Indonesia due to the fact that, just like everybody knows, it is one of the top
universities in Indonesia and it produces many notable graduates that are very successful, in which I
want to be a part of. I believe that University of Indonesia can facilitate and support my studies in
becoming a professional architect. I chose the international double degree program over the others to
develop my current knowledge that I have dug for the past three years in Penabur Secondary Kelapa
Gading, which is an international school, and bring it to a higher level outside of Indonesia. I chose this
program due to the fact that it offers me a chance to study abroad in University of Queensland Australia
for 2 years, which I am very interested for. In addition, by choosing this particular program, I hope to
broaden my insight in the world of architecture, so that I am ready to collaborate internationally with
other countries with great architectural references as a global citizen, in which I will bring and
implement Indonesia’s rich values and culture.
In the future, I would like to establish my own firm, so that I can take and work on my own projects, with
which I hope I can baffle not only my community but also the entire world. I would love to contribute to
Indonesia’s sustainable development through my works. I would also love to conserve Indonesia’s rich
cultures and implement it on my works.k
