Solving the Solutions

1. The labels have fallen off three solutions.

The three solutions are known to be sodium iodide (NaI), sodium bromide
(NaBr) and sodium chloride (NaCl).

Devise a test to positively identify the three solutions: A, B and C. Explain how
your test results will be conclusive with the aid of balanced symbol equations.

Create a table that could be used to record your results.

Add a solution of chlorine to all three solutions.

The solution of sodium iodide will change from colourless to red-brown as

iodine is formed.

Cl2(aq) + 2NaI(aq) → I2(aq) + 2NaCl(aq)

The solution of sodium bromide will change from colourless to yellow as

bromine is formed.

Cl2(aq) + 2NaBr(aq) → Br2(aq) + 2NaCl(aq)

The solution of sodium chloride will remain colourless.
