“The effects of cutting

classes
in the
SHS student of PTLCGI”
Chapter 1

Introduction

In today’s modern world is too normal among the students.  Cutting class is a coined

term is a coined term, that actually means intentionally not attending a required class in

one's formal education without a valid excuse/reason. Cutting of classes is especially

rampant in public schools in the Philippines where there is inefficient security and a

relatively high number of students thus making it hard to monitor each student.

Jocelyn Bogdan, Associate Director (2013) investigated the effects Cutting classes

on academic performance of undergraduate students at Canyon Crest Academy,

California in relation to their personality trades. This research establishes that cutting

classes has strong negative impact on academic performance of students with extrovert

personalities. However, factor of self-regulation among students greatly reduces this

negative impact as they have high level of self-control.

This study aims to examine the effects of cutting classes on student’s behaviors

which will mainly focus on their academic performance. Whether there is a positive and

negative relationship in this study.

The purpose of this research is to identify the effects of cutting classes whether it

is positive or negative and come up with a solution so that it can furthermore help the

students of PTLCGI and avoid its negative effects.

Statement of the Problem

This research aims at finding and understanding the impact cutting classes to the
academic performance of the Senior High School students of PTLCGI Specifically, the
research sought to answer the following specific questions:

1.What is the profile of the respondents in terms of:

a. Gender

b. Age

c. Educational Attainment

2.How does cutting classes affect the students’ academic performance when classified
according to gender and age?

3. Is there a significant effect in cutting to the academic performance of Senior High

School student of PTLCGI?

Significance of the Study

This survey will be conducted to the Senior High school students of PTLCGI and will
be asked a few questions about cutting classes and on how it has affected their
academic performances. To ensure honesty of their answers, the survey question that
will be asked to them were voluntary and confidential and will not be used against them
in any way.
This study will benefit the following:
- Teachers
They can teach their student more effective
- Students
For them to finish their study easily and this will also help them to gain more knowledge
-Parents
They will have fully knowledge about the negatives effect of cutting classes to their
children
Assumption of the study

1. The age of the respondents plays an important role in determining the negative
effects of cutting classes to SHS students of PTLCGI.
2. The researchers assume that one of the negative effects of cutting classes to
students is that they may get failing grade in every subject area.
3. This study assumes that if the teacher is always present in the class every day
and always check and encourage the students to attend their class it can have a
positive effect to the students.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This study aims to determine if cutting classes has significant impact on the
academic performance of the Senior High school students of PTLCGI using a survey.
The survey questionnaires will be distributed in some students to gather information for
this study. However, the survey will only include Senior High school students of PTLCGI
and exclude the College students.

Related Literature

One of the most recurring and the most “frustrating problem” that the schools are having
with their students nowadays is tardiness and cutting classes (Sprick and Daniels, 2007). It
creates problems, not just to the students but also to the teachers (Cowan Avenue Elementary
School Community, 2007, para 1). Cowan Crier, the official School Publication of CAESC, also
states that while having “occasional tardy” isn’t a big deal, unfailing tardiness is and it gives
students problems including being ill-prepared for the job market. According to the results of the
study of the U.S. Department of Education on “truancy”, which is related to tardiness, being
present and on time in going to school are big factors on the “success and behavior” of the
students (Zeiger, 2010, para 1). Thus, it is a lot important to value time and practice being on
time while being a student.

A study conducted by Barbara Lee Weade on 2004 tried to "determine if school
tardiness and cutting classes is a predictor of work tardiness" (Weade, 2004). It provided a lot of
literature that observes correlations and factors affecting a student's tardiness and and not
going to school. As cited by Weade, the 3rd most common cause for the failure of a student is
"excessive tardiness and unexcused absences" (Ligon and Jackson, 1988). "Inconsistency of
school rules" (Britt, 1988) and situations such as “crowded halls, limited opportunities for social
interaction, irrelevant course content, and teacher indifference” (Damico et al., 1990) are also
factors that affect a student's attendance and punctuality. As mentioned by Weade, personal
values, financial security and lack of parental guidance (Payne, 2001) as well as family
background (Featherstone et al., 1992) influence tardiness and absences of students.

Moreover, as mentioned by Zeiger (2010), the results from the survey report conducted
by teachers show that students with high tardiness rates have “higher rates of suspension and
other disciplinary measures” (National Center for Education Statistics Indicators of School Crime
and Safety [NCESISCS] (2007)). It also causes the students to have behavioral problems and to
drop out. Lastly, Zeiger (2010) stated that “Students who are frequently tardy to school are also
more apt to be fired from a job for showing up late.

Theoretical Framework

This research will be based with the different theories or other researches done by
several theorists about the effects of Facebook usage. This research will also stress on
impacts of cutting classes in the academic performance of Senior High school student
of PTLCGI.

First, we will give a definition of cutting classes and present some theories and facts about
it. Next, we will discuss he various factors that causes the students to come to school late, the
psychological theories, the observation of the teachers and the personal reasons of the
students. Lastly, the effects of tardiness to students, not just to himself/herself but also to his/her
future and to other people, will be discussed.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the method to be used, Population and Sampling, assumption
of the study and the scope and delimitation. The purpose of this research is to find out
the possible factors that affects the academic performances of the student because of
cutting classes and also to find out their recommendation or the feedbacks to the
research survey.

The research questions of the research survey entitled, “The effects of cutting
classes in the SHS student of PTLCGI” mainly focused on different factors which can
affect the academic performance of the student in PTLCGI. The possible outcome will
base from the respondents and it will reflect the result based on their experience in
school.

The conducted research of the group has some important findings. Should these
important findings can really solve the research problem? Would it be a positive or
negative outcome?

POPULATION AND SAMPLING

The population of the study is primarily on the SHS student of PTLCGI. This
research utilizes sixty (60) SHS students as respondents. There were sixty (60) survey
questionnaires that were handed to gender types, the male and the female. Thirty (30)
male respondent and thirty (30) female respondents answered the survey
questionnaires.
