THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

Education has a crucial importance in our lives. Teachers have focused a lot of attention on

motivation over the years because it is the foundation of the learning process. Learning is a

challenging and dynamic process, and in practice, learning is only accomplished with drive. Students

make a significant advancement in their learning through motivation since the will to learn is one of

the fundamental components of learning. However, students may sometimes lose their willingness

and interest towards lesson, which puts a major barrier in front of effective learning, resulting to lack

of motivation for students to study.

Not only those who perform poorly academically can lack motivation. Successful remedial and

study skills course designed for underprepared pupils have shown that determined learners can

make significant progress in their skills. Even the best remedial education programs, meanwhile,

have not been able to motivate a kid who is intellectually underprepared. When Students have both a

lack of academic skills and lack of motivation, the greater problem is motivation (Kelly,1988).

A student who is uninterested in learning will skip classes and do horribly on examinations. In

the worst scenarios, students may stop going to school or college and simply sit at home without

thinking about their future careers, education, or general quality of life. We should first identify the

underlying causes of this lack of motivation in order to persuade the students to do well on their

studies and pursue their college courses and desired career.

Background of the Study

Motivation is a state that can keep students' attention and behavior while also providing them

with the energy they need to complete tasks. As a result, it can help sustain activities over time.

Motivation in education can have a variety of effects on students' behavior, preferences, and

outcomes. Motivation is also an important factor in the learning process for students. The success of

a student's learning process is determined by their motivation. Motivation drives them to achieve their

objectives.

According to Ormrod (2011:362), "it leads to increased effort and energy in pursuit of those

goals." As a result, motivation is the key to unlocking their future success. Motivation plays an

important role in influencing the effectiveness of learning activities, but motivation is also influenced

by goals, goals. When there is a higher goal, there is more motivation to achieve the goal.

Meanwhile the students without interest in a particular topic or program will find many

difficulties in their studying process. It means that uninterested students would not get an

achievement as better as students who have an interest in their studying activity. It will become a

complex problem which hinder their motivation to grow up that will affect their future career.

Sasson (2019) explains that a lack of motivation refers to having a deficient level of passion

and enthusiasm in doing a job. Furthermore, Shore (2017) also mentions that a lack of motivation can

be interpreted as an uncaring attitude toward what one supposed to do. Japari School (2018), low

motivation has been experienced by everyone, including students, as it is a situation where a student

does not want to learn due to the difficulty in following the lesson.

As students do not understand what they are learning in class, they end up feeling

unmotivated (Barse, 2015). Greate School (2014) also states that a deficient level of students’

confidence, the unrealized expectations in the classroom, unappreciated or unsupported by the

family, and the high-pressure cause students to have low motivation in learning, resulting in poor
academic performance. Huitt (2005), the reasons students become unmotivated are due to the

teacher being unclear in delivering the lesson, having low self-confidence, dissatisfaction while

learning, and personal problems from students.

According to the research of Borderless charity Inc., titled ‘How motivation affects academic

performance’, says that “Students can feel unenthusiastic towards studying or learning when they are

scared to fail; when they are not challenged; when they don’t feel the importance of studying; when

they have emotional and anger issue; or when they need special attention”. And according to ‘Built by

me STEM learning’ posted by Victor Silva, there are factors that affects the student’s motivation in

education which are: class and curriculum structure; teacher behavior and personality; teaching

methods; parental habits and involvement; family issues and instability; peer relationship; learning

environment and assessment.

These studies indicate factors that affects the lack of motivation of students in education,

therefore the researchers will be conducting this study in order to find out the factors that affects the

motivation of Senior High School Students in San Juan National High School to study. This research

will show details and information on how important it is to know the factors that affects the lack of

motivation of Senior High School students to study and give solution to this particular issue.
SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The factors affecting the lack of motivation of individual students are because they may suffer

psychologically, physically or other personal problems. We the researcher conducted focused mainly

on this study entitled "Factors affecting the lack of motivation of Senior high school students to study"

to be held in San Juan National high school for school year 2022 - 2023. This study will use a

questionnaire to get the information that are needed to help the researcher find the answers to this

study. The target respondents were the Senior high school students in San Juan national high

school. The researcher will use simple randomly sampling for selecting students in gathering the

data.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine what are the Factors Affecting the Lack of Motivation of

Senior High School Students to Study and find answers to the following questions:

1.) What are the reasons why Senior High School students lacks motivation to study?

2.) How does knowing the factors that affects the lack of motivation of senior high school students

to study helps us to solve this particular issue?

3.) How can the lack of motivation affect the student’s life and future?

4.) What are some possible ways to help the Senior high school students to boost their motivation

to study?
Significance of the study

The researchers believe that the result of this study will provide benefits to the following:

For the STUDENTS in this study, the students should be aware in the various factors that

influence students motivation to study, and they will also know that how motivation is important in

their studies.

For the TEACHERS this research can provide additional knowledge for teachers regarding other

causes that affect the motivation the motivation of a student in their study, it can also help

teachers to become more knowledgeable how to deal effectively with students who lack of

motivation in this studies.

For PARENTS this study will provide information that has an factor that affect their child

motivation to study, this study will also help to provide enough information about the proper

guiding to their children who is affecting motivation to study.

And for the FUTURE RESEARCHERS, the result of this study may be a basis of further studies

and it can be used as related literature.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

Spady's Sociological theory

Spady was one of the first researchers to propose a widely recognised theory on student

retention in 1970 (Spady 1970,77). In this theory, it is said that student dropout comes from the

interaction of the individual student and his school environment. When a student cannot cope with the

demands of his school or the student’s attitude, skills, and interests are not suitable for his school,

there are really bad outcome, it affects their motivation to study and their performance in school. The

variables that also can affect to students drop out are family background, academic potential,

normative congruence, grade performance, intellectual development and peer support. All these

variables are further linked to two other variables namely satisfaction with the school environment

and institutional commitment (Spady 1970,77).

Self Determination Theory

People have an innate tendency to self-regulate their behavior and engage with others for

intellectual growth, according to SDT (Deci & Ryan, 1985; Ryan & Deci, 2000, 2002). However,

depending on the circumstances, this tendency can be heightened or diminished. Human motivation

can be broadly classified as intrinsic or extrinsic within SDT (Deci & Ryan, 1985). When a student is

intrinsically motivated, they do something because it is exciting and enjoyable. When a student is

extrinsically motivated, they engage in an activity to achieve a separate goal. According to Deci and

Ryan (1985) and Ryan and Deci (2000, 2002), fulfilling the three psychological needs of autonomy,

competence, and relatedness is universal and necessary for motivation and well-being.

Theory of Academic Performance (ToP)

The theory of academic performance (ToP) was developed by Elger (2007). This theory

emphasizes six components: context, level of knowledge, levels of skills, level of identity, personal

factors, and fixed factors. It can be used to explain performance as well as why the students lack of

motivation to study. When an individual performs in an activity, he learns new things about something

and is able to show his abilities that he has not yet discovered. As advocates by Harvard's Project

Zero, performance is closely related to learning-for-understanding (Wiske, 1998). So if the students

don’t learn and understand the lessons they lose motivation and are most likely to have low

performance in academic.

Academic Learning/Engaged Time (ALT/AET) Theory

Teachers frequently complain about students' lack of motivation, attention, and engagement in

the classroom, as well as how these behaviors reduce instructional and learning time - what is known

in the literature as Academic Learning Time (ALT), which is defined as "the amount of time a student

spends engaged in an academic task that s/he can perform with high success" (Fisher et al., 2015, p.

7). Other authors, such as Gettinger and Walter (2012), prefer to call this phenomenon Academic

Engaged Time (AET). In the literature, ALT (or AET) is associated with a decrease in academic

achievement, which can be explained by students' lack of motivation, defined as the student's

willingness to learn (Gettinger & Walter, 2012)- as well as the low student engagement rate, which is

the "proportion of instructional time during which students are engaged in learning as evidenced by

paying attention, completing written work, or interacting with peers about assigned work" (Gettinger &

Seibert, 2002, p. 3).
