CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

In this chapter the overall nature of the problem is presented, concept and theories
as foundation of the study objectives contrariwise the research question, significance of the
study, scope and limitations and important key terms that have bearing in the study.

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Tardiness is one of the serious problem specially to the students. This study
about tardiness focussed on finding out what are the reasons why students get late when
going to school which affects their focusness and activeness to their academic performance
and to know how to prevent this problem. Chronic tradiness or the consistent lateness of the
student to class can give negative result to student’s future educaton and career (Bennion,
2018). Tardiness is recorded as part of their attendance everyday during class(Bangor
Christian Schools, 2016).

According to Vukovic (2017), researchers found out that students who are most of
the time tardy often miss out important academic activities during morning. students who
are continually tardy might be having lack of support. Teachers must consider respecting
time in all students as life skill which can be touhgt in any subject area (Kelly 2018)

Lateness to school is like a virus that hampers the growth and prevent the
achievement of academic goals (Maile & Olowoyo, 2017) it was being observe that
students tardiness is the effect of indicipline (Odebode, 2019).

Engagement in too many house chores causes some students to get late when going
to school, while some students get late because of sleeping late, poor preparation for school,
illness, watching films at night and many more. Most of the students who aren’t able to go
to school at the right time is because of improper time management and this problem is a
struggle for some teachers when students get tardy during his/her subject in the morning.

However some students admit that there are times when it’s their choice to be late
during their classes in the morning because of not wanting to take quizes during this time,
without thinking the impact of it to their grades as a student.

1.2 Literature Review

According to Oxford (2019) tardiness is the quality of being late in school, while the act
of frequently tardy is called chronic tardiness which can give negative effect for students
specisally to their academic performance.

Maria Arrth ( 2016, August 20) added that guardian must take good care and must know
what’s the reason behind if why is that their students were being tardy when they both
know that this has negative effect to his/her academic performance.

J. environ. Res. Public Health (2020) asserted that Tardiness is a common problem in
many schools. It can be understood as an individual risk for future problematic behavior
leading to absenteeism, school dropout, exclusion and later health problems. Tardiness can
also be examined in relation to a broader social-ecological perspective on health. The aim
of this study was to analyze students’, school staff’s and parents’ views on students’
tardiness in two Swedish schools. A focus group interview design was used with 21 school
personnel, 21 students in grade nine and two parents. The data were analyzed by using
thematic content analysis. The results illustrated the main theme—It depends on…—
regarding what will happen if a student arrives late to school lessons. This finding is further
explained by the subthemes about teachers’ signals and reactions and the responses from
teachers and students. The conclusion showed the importance of organizing the school day
more predictably for the students. Late arrival is a sign of shortcomings in a school
organization. It is necessary to develop guidelines related to how to handle students’ late
arrival based on predictable viewpoints but even more so on how to promote students’
sense of belonging and their interest in and motivation for going to school.

Vol. 3 No. 2C (2019) Stated Students need to understand that being absent or late does
not excuse them from these commitments.

1.3 Research Problem

1. Particularly shared reasons why students get late when going to school?
2. What are the effects of tardiness to students academic performance?
3. What could be the solution to solve this problem?

1.4 Theortical Framework

Any human action who developed behaviorism is possible to understand or behave

without needing to research internal and mental processes and consciousness according to
John B. Watson (1921).
According to this belief, students frequently arrive late because of the teacher who
doesn't take any action, such as punishing their students or those who are acting out,
constantly being late causes students to believe that being late is OK because there is no
consequence. Repercussion in their actions. Behaviorism makes it simple for us to
comprehend the nature of any human conduct. The objective investigation of behavior is
known as behaviorism. Creating the foundation is the true objective. Predicting and managing
people requires knowing what they will do in different situations. Will do; to be able to explain
the man's behavior and why he is acting that way. via means of utilizing their own initiatives as
well as the reports of other researchers in the same sector.
Kaye-Tierney (2009) investigated chronic tardiness among students in a suburban
middle school. The Northeastern United States context via an anthropological investigation of
the frequently-the attendance office, the school personnel, and the tardy kid. The
investigation was conducted using a bounded case study that applies grounded theory. The
information includes attendance observations. Office, seven staff employees, fourteen
students who were frequently late, and semi-structured interviews Using historical data,
gathered over two academic years, 2005–2007, to make sure that the "lateness" data did not
only apply to one year in the school's history. The pupils, selected as "Frequent Flyers" because
of their frequent tardiness to school conduct, as well as their readiness—and that of their
parents—to participate in an interview.
This present study is anchored on the theory of Burrhus Frederic Skinner orknown as B.F.

Operant conditioning was developed by Skinner in 1938. It allows a person to associate a
certain behavior with a specific outcome. Operant conditioning is a type of learning strategy
where conduct is rewarded and punished. In this piece, Skinner asserted that the best
approach to comprehend behavior is to consider the reasons behind an action and its effects.
This notion is related to the issue "Tardiness" because unwelcome conduct, such as being
late and dominating class discussion, can be curbed by the instructor ignoring them rather
than drawing attention to them. This rule states that actions that result in positive outcomes
are more likely to be repeated. This explains why a behavior is more likely to be repeated
when the teacher doesn't object to it. On the other hand, positive consequences are more
likely to occur again if the instructor corrects or rewards good behavior. The work of
psychologist Edward Thorn Dike, who presented what he dubbed the "law of effect" in 1898,
had a significant impact on his idea.

1.5 Scope and Limitations

This study is limited to only to account the impact of tardiness on students success
among Senior High School Students who were always late during morning class
specifically in schools within the Prosperedad National High School.
