CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Class tardiness has remained a perpetual problem throughout the history

of learning. Although much literature has expended over issues of indiscipline

within the school system, very little has centered on tardiness mainly involving

absenteeism in students causing them to get low grades in their academic

performance.

Being late is one of the issue's that have been a problem of a senior high

school students.In the circumstances,tardiness remains

uncontrolled.First, students with greater tardiness perform worse on academic

subjects as well as grades.Second, student who are tardy are more frequently

also have lower test scores. One of the major causes of lateness is going to bed

late because it could result walking up late and insufficient rest for the lesson.

(Nakpodia and Dafiaghor,2011) Tardiness has its cause and effect and some of it

are common problems encountered by any school world wide.Although this will

now depend on the culture of the country, thus having varying reasons how

tardiness will be viewed upon.different cultures have different standards

concerning lateness. However, punctuality is not really a serious matter for some

cultures, compared with how punctuality is being perceived in western cultures

and developed countries.(Breeze et. Al ...2010) Tardiness can be also trigger by

several psychological and emotional conditions. These conditions can undermine

students motivation to get to class on time.Indeed, a hallmark symptom of

conditions such as depression includes a decreased motivation to engage in

motivation and may disrupt sleep problems, which may indirectly affect students

ability to get to class in a timely manner.(Kuhlensehmldt and Layne, 1999) The

school has implemented the confiscation of identification devices or ID if the

student is late, focusing on the improvement of the students to alleviate

tardiness.Saint Paul school of professional studies has specific policies concerning

student tardiness.Students sometimes have legitimate reasons for showing up

late, such as transportation problems and doctor's appointments.School

administration often consider such events to be "excused absences".However,

after reaching a predetermined number of unexcused tardy arrivals, students may

be put on a structured disciplinary slip to address any further late arrivals.

Depending on their continued violations student may be sent to students affairs

office to give sanctions community services or even suspension. These sanctions

implemented by the school for the students who reached the maximum number

of tardy arrivals. These said implementation aims to improve students behaviors.

This study therefore attempts to extend research on class tardiness by

discerning the basic question regarding promptness in school and class

attendance by students at St. Vincent's High School, Inc. Where not only the

students can get benefits in this study but also the parents, teachers, and the

administrators after the researching.

Tardiness also remained as an unending topic with teachers and

administrators perplexed on how to deal with this phenomenon, how to solve,

and to ease this behavior of students. On our observation commonly students

nowadays are always tired from getting up in bed every morning and tired after

spending their time at school which is a very big problem at a young age on how

they lead their future themselves. Also convinced that due to the newest

technologies of this generation, has been also the reason why commonly

students have this kind of behavior. Although we know that parents thought their

children good manners such as punctuality, but still the children only have

controls on what should they do to their lives especially the teenagers.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

This analysis discusses various concepts that are used in this study and the

proposition on the topic that are presented in various scholarly work.

academic achievement of the students of St. Vincent's High School, Inc.

1. What are the reasons of student's tardiness?

2. What are the effects of tardiness to students academic performance?

3. What are the possible solutions to the effects of tardiness?

4. How can you reduce the students being late in going to school?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The group that will benefit this study are the following:

Student: the student will have a deeper understanding about the behavior

and factors that lead to tardiness which can be used as guide to avoid this

certain issue.

Parents: with this study, parents can instill to the students to miss out vital

information.

Teacher and Principal: teachers is an essential part to this problem to

recognize and display solution to this disturbing problem that could drive the

students failing.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

INTRODUCTION

Being always late in class can affect the learning of a student as well as

she/he can disturb other students and also the teacher who are having a class.

Acc. To breeze et al.(2010) lateness is synonymous to tardiness which implies

being slow to act or being slow to respond this is not meeting up with proper or

usual timing. Habitual tardiness can also be learned from other members of the

family especially from the older members of the family especially from the older

ones. Film watching at night can also affect the tardiness of a students. Acc. to

Nakpodia and Dafiaghor(2011) waking up late in the morning are one of the

most factors of lateness why they go to school late is because of heavy traffic,

household chores, vehicle breakdowns and lack of responsibility are some

reasons why students arrive late to class. One of the most recurring and most

"frustrating problem" that the school nowadays are having tardiness. (Sprick and

Daniels 2007).

Tardiness As GVAHS student we always observed that there are many

Senior High School students that being trapped on the gate the flag rises every

Monday morning.

According to an article by Vera Mella (n.d)Filipinos in the Philippines fail to

keep up with punctuality is not simply laziness nor irresponsibility but the

boulders of obstacles caused by heavy traffic and difficulty in

transportation ,whether one is a commuter or a motorist - which makes a few-

kilometer -distance equivalent to more than a hour of travel.

A recent study by Bolaños et al.(2017)

Claims that tardiness was the top minor infraction committed by Junior High

School student in Davao University-Junior High School. The top reasons of

respondents for being tardy in coming to school were going late to bed and

waking up late (65%) and the distance to school (61%).Among the various

reasons why students go to bed late was the fact that more than one fourth

(27%) of them spent their time when not in school hanging around with friends.

Moreover, more than half (56%) of the respondents went to bed at 10:00PM. As

cited by nakpodia and dafiaghor (2011),"lateness" can be defined as respondents

went to bed at 10:00PM

As cited by Nakpodia And dafiaghor (2011),"lateness" can be defined as the

"situation where an individual arrives after the proper ,scheduled or usual time

(Oxford advance learners ' dictionary ,5th ed..1995),Lauby (2009) puts it as a

term used to described " people not showing up on time"and breeze et al. (2010)

contributed by saying that lateness is synonyms with "tardiness", which implies

slow to act or slow to respond, thus not meeting up with proper usual timing.

The literature review covered tardiness and absences in the work and

school environment, school failure and its relationship to school tardiness and

absenteeism, school interventions to change deviant behavior, students =insights

about deviant behavior, the home influence on school tardiness and

absences, and the effect of work on school behavior and performance.

The research showed that working students are significantly different than

their fellow students.Working students are more punctual at school classes, have

fewer unexcused school absences, and have higher grade point averages(GPA).

The hypothesis that working students will exhibit the same tardiness pattern at

work as well as at school was strongly supported. That is, student who were

punctual at school were also punctual at work while students who were tardy at

school were also tardy at work.Ancillary findings included a correlation between

students tardiness and unexcused absences and GPA, no significant differences

between genders on tardiness and unexcused absences in school, a significantly

higher GPA for females than for males, and a significant difference between high

school grade levels and their tardiness and unexcused absence behavior.

Local Study

Taliptip Elementary School, Bulacan.

In a coastal village here, tardiness and absenteeism are normal for

elementary school pupils who have to wade through floods or take a banca ride

to and from school.Half of 130 students of taliptip elementary school here do not
attend classes at the end of each week because they have to take a banca ride

to school for P25, And another ride back home for another P25, costs that many

parents feel are exorbitant. These students come from coastal sitio

bunutan,Capol,DapDap,WaWang,Capiz,Baluarte,Quinse,Pariahan,and

pinagkaipunan.

"Often, only 50% of pupils come to school on Thursday and Friday", Priscilla de

los Reyes, school principal, said."the No.1 problem has been the banca fare of

P50 per child for the 30-to 45-minute trip".

the school. Parents that untimely tasks and commands are also reasons that a

student come late to school. The distance between the student's home from

school or the school's location is also considered as the cause of tardiness. Lack

of firm and consistent policy can also encourages the students to come late at

school since there is no consequences attached to lateness or tardiness. A

student is considered tardy when she/he is not present when the school bell ring

when the teacher start to give instruction for the first subject in the morning

class. According to weade (2004), defined tardiness " being late for any

measurable length of time past the stated or schedule start school. Our study

intends to find out the tardiness of the senior high school students in Southern

Christian Collage and the reasons and factors that may influence this tardiness.
CHAPTER III

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY.

INTRODUCTION

We've had conducted the in-depth individuals interviews with senior high

students to let them elaborate and help them understand what is tardiness and

and how it affects an individuals life. We have this drive to share more

information in order to inform our fellow schoolmates to be in tuned with whats

happening in our society and how tardiness must stop in order to have a good

communication with other people and to be protected

RESEARCH DESIGHN

The qualitative design using semi-structured one on one interviews was

utilized for data gathering. The research sought to depth understanding of the

perception of students who are engage in tardiness..

SAMPLING METHOD

We used judgmental sampling method as our technique in finding data. The

sample was selected from people who was engage in tardiness. The researcher

interview 5 person and they participated according to their will.

INSTRUMENT USED

Semi-structured interview was used in this kind of research in order to

gather focused and qualitative data. The researcher aims to get the precise data

of all interviews. After the interviews were checked and analyze well.

DATA COLLECTION

The researcher trusted the students about the study and gave them question

sheet and informed them that participation was due to their will. The researcher

provided a paper to the interviewees. While having an interview they took a one

on one photo that will serve as their proof that they interviewed that student.

DATA ANALYSIS

The thematic of content analysis was used to analyze the interview data.

This analysis method was comprised of five steps, namely: transcription,

checking, editing, analysis, interpretation and verification.

STEP 1: TRANSCRIPTION

The researcher transferred the data to a more comfortable paper and read it

to get an idea of what the idea is about.

STEP 2: CHECKING AND EDITING

The data was checked and edited if there are some problem occurrence.

This achieved by reading each paragraph.

STEP 3: ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION

The researcher needs to visualize the theme. This was achieved buy using

the researcher perspective and understanding of the ideas that were shown.

STEP 4: GENERALIZATION

The difference and similarities, between formal and informal interview, to

know how they felt being engaged in tardiness.

STEP 5: VALIDATION

Validity of the data was checked by going through and analyzing the

transcript again, and allowing my fellow schoolmates to read it was-as to validate

the findings.

ETHECAL CONSIDERATIONS

This research honored the ethical standards set by the generic research

ethics. In other words, the interviewees were informed about all the steps that

were to be taken in this research. The interviewees are more important than the

study, and therefore always respected. The interviewees were informed that the

study was completely voluntary, and would not affect their studies.
Confidentiality was provided, as the subjects identity the identify information was
