THE EFFECT OF

ABSENTEEISM ON

THE

PERFORMANCE

OF THE JUNIOR

HIGH SCHOOL

LEARNERS
CHAPTER 1

Introduction

Absenteeism in schools refers to the consistent or intentional absence of

students from their regular classes or educational activities without a valid reason. It is

a prevalent issue that affects educational institutions worldwide and can have

significant consequences for both individual students and the overall learning

environment.

There are several reasons why students may be absent from school. These

include illness, family emergencies, personal obligations, lack of interest or

motivation, bullying or safety concerns, academic struggles, and disengagement from

school. In some cases, absenteeism may be a symptom of deeper underlying issues

such as mental health challenges, difficult home environments, or socio-economic

factors.

Student’s attendance at school and their classes plays a decisive role in a

achieving the desired result from education and training activities. For policies and

reforms in education to succeed, students must attend school first. Among the main

areas of work for education manager is determining and eliminating the factors that

lead to absenteeism and their effects on educational environments. This study

investigated the effects of student absenteeism on educational environments, and

existing were evaluated.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Several studies have been conducted to understand the causes, consequences,

and potential solutions to the issue of absenteeism in schools. These studies have shed

light on various aspects of absenteeism and provided valuable insights for educators,

policymakers, and researchers. Here are some key findings from the background

studies on absenteeism in schools: Multiple factors contribute to student absenteeism,

such as health-related issues, socio-economic factors, lack of parental involvement,

bullying and safety concerns, academic difficulties, and psychological factors.

Absenteeism has a significant negative impact on academic achievement, with

students who are frequently absent performing poorer academically compared to their

peers with regular attendance. Chronic absenteeism is strongly linked to an increased

risk of dropping out of school, as students who consistently miss many school days

become disengaged and lose interest in education. Absenteeism can have social and

emotional consequences for students, leading to feelings of isolation, difficulty in

building relationships, reduced engagement in extracurricular activities, low self-

esteem, increased anxiety, and detachment from the school community. Various

interventions and solutions can address absenteeism, including improving school

climate and safety, implementing early warning systems, fostering positive

relationships between students and teachers, providing targeted support services,

involving parents and families, and implementing truancy prevention programs.

Comprehensive approaches are necessary to address absenteeism, considering the

multifaceted nature of the issue and the need to understand underlying causes and

implement evidence-based interventions. By implementing effective strategies,

schools can reduce absenteeism, create a supportive learning environment, and

promote regular attendance, ultimately supporting student success.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The study of absenteeism in schools serves multiple purposes. It helps identify

the causes of frequent student absences, such as health issues or disengagement, and

assesses their impact on academic performance and achievement. By studying

absenteeism, researchers can understand its effects on students' well-being and social

development, as well as identify educational disparities and promote equity. The

knowledge gained from studying absenteeism informs the development of

intervention strategies to improve attendance and support student success. It also

guides policy decisions and resource allocation in education systems. Overall,

studying absenteeism contributes to understanding and addressing the factors

influencing student attendance and promoting positive educational outcomes.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

1. What are the common causes of absenteeism among students?

2. How does absenteeism impact students’ academic performance and

achievements?

3. How can schools and educators ensure that students who are absent from

school for an extended period receive appropriate educational support and

services?
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The result study is deemed to be beneficial to the following people and entities:

Students. This study will raise student’s awareness with regard to the factors of

absenteeism with this, the students will become more responsible in going to school.

School Administration. The result of this study can be basis to the school

administration in finding ways in creating interventions that will help in solving the

said problem if it’s in proven.

Teachers. This result of the study can be basis for the teachers to be able to identify

different motivational techniques/strategies on how they can influence students to

lessen or eliminate act of absenteeism.

Parents. Through this study, the parents will be aware if their children are prone to

absenteeism. Through this, parents can guide their children to be responsible in going

to school.

Future research. This study will serve as a reference for future researchers who will

be conducting a study in relation to absenteeism.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

In Mangaldan Integrated School SPED Center, a research were conducted. This study

limits its coverage on the junior high school students only. Its main purpose is to

identify the common problems that they encounter and to propose possible solutions

regarding this problem. This study considers every aspect of students’ personal

information that has an impact on their academic performances such as the other

students, school administrations, teachers, parents, and the future researchers. Each of

the respondents are given same questionnaires to answer. And this study focuses on

factors influencing absenteeism of the present school year, 2022-2023.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

In order to facilitate better understanding of this study the following terms are:

Absenteeism- the term refers to the habitual pattern of absences from a duty or

obligation without good reason. In this study, the same definition will be utilized by

the researchers.

Influence- the word is defined as the power to cause an effect to someone or

something.

Factors- the term refers to the one of the things that affects an event, decision, and

situation. The word is defined as the state of becoming notable or significant. In the
context of this study, the word shall be used to refer to the causes of the absences of

students in Mangaldan Integrated School Sped Center.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Absenteeism in schools refers to the consistent or frequent absence of students

from their academic activities. It is a significant concern for educators, policymakers,

and parents due to its adverse effects on student achievement, educational outcomes,

and overall school climate. This review aims to examine and summarize the existing

literature on absenteeism in school, focusing on its causes, consequences, and

potential interventions.

Being always present in class and getting to school on time are two of the

crucial determining factors of a student success not just a student but as a person who

will be managing his/her own life in the future given the that affect the punctuality of

MISSC students. In this chapter, we will be discussing about the background of our

study.

It includes facts about tardiness the different factors that causes it and its effect

to the students and as bearer of their own lives in the future from reliable research

materials like online journals and research papers we will provide some facts and

theories from authors. Attending school regularly is a vital factor in school success for

both students and teachers. Excessive school absenteeism to poor school academic
achievement, so school attendance by both teachers and student plays an integral role

in the success and educational advancement levels of any academic institution and all

students enrolled.

CHAPTER 3

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, absenteeism in schools is a significant concern that has far-

reaching consequences for students, schools, and the overall educational system. This

review of related literature has shed light on the causes, consequences, and potential

interventions associated with absenteeism.

The causes of absenteeism encompass various factors, including health-related

issues, family and socioeconomic factors, school-related factors, and individual

factors. Understanding these underlying causes is crucial for developing targeted

interventions to address absenteeism effectively.

The consequences of absenteeism are multi-faceted and encompass academic,

social, and emotional domains. Poor academic achievement, increased dropout rates,

disruption of the learning environment, and negative impacts on students' social and

emotional well-being are some of the outcomes associated with frequent absences.

To combat absenteeism, a range of intervention strategies have been proposed

and implemented. Early identification and support, creating a positive school climate,

involving parents and the community, and implementing policy and legal measures
are some of the approaches that can help address absenteeism. These interventions

aim to promote student engagement, provide necessary support, and establish a

culture of attendance and accountability.

It is important to note that further research is needed to explore the

effectiveness of different intervention strategies and identify new approaches to

combat absenteeism. Additionally, ongoing collaboration among educators,

policymakers, parents, and the wider community is crucial for implementing and

sustaining effective interventions.

By understanding the causes, consequences, and potential interventions related

to absenteeism, stakeholders can work together to create inclusive learning

environments that prioritize student attendance, engagement, and overall success.
