“IMPACT OF STUDY HABITS TOWARDS

ACADEMIC ENGAGEMENT OF GRADE-12 HUMANITIES AND

SOCIAL SCIENCES STUDENTS IN
LOBO SENIOR HIGHSCHOOL”

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

In the past two years, all people experienced different difficulties or
challenges in every day life because of the pandemic. In academic life,
students suffered many problems in education. It cause several
hindrances in the study habits towards academic performances which
gives a big impact to the HUMSS students. According to Haleh Jafari,
Abbas Aghaei, and Alireza Khatony (August 15, 2019), Academic
performance of students is one of the main indicators used to evaluate the
quality of education in universities. Academic performance is a complex
process that is influenced by several factors, such as study habits. Study
habits is different individual behavior in relation to studying and is a
combination of study method and skill. In other words, study habits include
behavior and skills that can increase motivation and convert the study into
an effective process with high returns, which ultimately increases the
learning. This skill is also defined as any activity that facilitates the
process of learning about a topic, solving the problems or memorizing part
or all of the presented materials. Study habits are in fact the gateway to
success and differ from person to person.
According to previous study, good study habits includes studying in
a quite place, studying daily, turning of devices that interfere with the study
(such as tv and mobile phones Mobile phones), taking notes of important
content having regular rests and breaks, listening to soft music, studying
based on own learning style and prioritizing the difficult contents. Some of
the worst study habits include procrastination, evading the study, studying
in inappropriate conditions, and loud sound of music and television and
during studying. Study habits are the most important predictor of academic
performance and global research has revealed that study habits affect
academic performance. Evidence suggests that learners who do not have
enough information about study strategies do not attain effective and
stable learning, and therefore were not have are appropriate level of
academic achievement. Students with better academic achievement use
these skill more than those with lower academic achievement. According
to Toheeb Olantunji (2019), the study examined study habits and
academic performance of senior high school students. A case study of
selected secondary schools.
The main purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship
between study habits and academic performance of senior secondary
school students. Guidance should be organized in schools by professional
counsellors in order to create awareness on how students can develop
effective study habits which could lead to good academic performance
and a functional school library should be mounted in all the secondary
schools. Academic performance of students is a major concern of all
education stakeholder's world over. This interest and the concern are not
unconnected with the fact that only a qualitative education and good
performance can guarantee effective national development, socialization
of individual to become and integral part of the society, and achievement
of personal goals and individual aspirations.
According to Lykologab (2012), in general, learning habits can be
simple defined as an individual’s ability to understand information in order
to fully understand and maximize the learning capacity that has become
the need of our society. It is not limited to students who regularly go to
school to master and remember concept or lessons learn from their
teachers, but it applies to all areas of work. Students are also more likely
to be scared and anxious when faced with quizzes and test, no matter
how difficult a topic. Failure to score indicates that the student is lazy, has
bad study habits, or the environment often affects the student’s mental
state. Another factor that emphasizes the importance of study habits is the
stress level of students depending on weather they can deal with
demanding or demanding teacher and loads of homework. Today, there
are many ways to deal with good study habits and combat stress and
problems that can set the stage for learning. Moreover, due to the
overwhelming influence of modern technology, it is difficult for students
today to overcome the motivation to study, even though it is sometimes
convenient.
During the quarantine days, students’ study habits change a lot.
Some of them have encountered so many hindrances with the studies
cause students are not practiced in modular learning. Students experience
over-studying changes in school performance. Over-studying can cause
mental distraction and make it difficult to retain information. Not being able
to focus during class and not being able to retain information can seriously
affect a child’s grades and participation in the classroom. The stress of
over studying can show real physical signs- headaches or digestive
issues- and can lead to long term health issues.
Therefore, the researchers will be conducting a study which aims to
determine the impact of study habits towards academic development
among Grade 12 Humanities and Social Sciences Students in Lobo
Senior High School for School Year 2022-2023. With this, the researchers
will come up to proposed an action plan to construct the study habits in
the said school.

Study Habits and Attitudes: The Road to Academic Success Marie Jean N.
Mendezabal Open Science Repository Education, e70081928, 2013. This study aimed to
investigate the relationship of students’ study habits and attitudes and their
performance in licensure examinations. The participants were graduates in school year
2009-2010 from the different programs of the University which require licensure
examination. The study habits and attitudes of the participants were assessed by
administering the “Survey of Study Habits and Attitudes”(SSHA) developed by Brown
and Holtzman (1967) during their final year in the University and their performance
(overall rating) in the different licensure examinations was generated from the records
of the Philippine Professional Regulation Commission. Results of the study showed that
the participants do not have favorable study habits and attitudes. Among the noted
unfavorable study habits were inefficient time management, lack of planning and
concentration in their studies, poor skills in reading, ineffective test taking techniques,
and failure to inform their teachers of their difficulties with school work and ask for their
help. The participants also demonstrated unfavorable attitudes toward teachers’
classroom behavior and methods. It was further revealed that their performance in
licensure examinations was quite low. Significant relationship between study habits and
attitudes and performance in licensure examination were clearly shown in this study.
Further analysis revealed that study habits (work methods and time management) of
the participants were correlated with their success in licensure examination while study
attitudes (ie attitudes toward teachers and educational acceptance) were not
significantly related to success in licensure examination. This connotes that students
who have favorable study habits will likely pass the licensure examination.

The effects of auditory learning strategy on learning skills of language

learners (students’ views) Fil Kayalar, Fet Kayalar IOSR Journal Of Humanities
And Social Science (IOSR-JHSS) 22 (10), 04-10, 2017 Auditory learning style
enables auditory learners to learn best by hearing or through verbal
communication. Auditory learners are good at remembering what they hear as
they learn information through auditory representation. Auditory components
such as tone, pitch, and loudness are all important to these learners. The
purpose of this paper is to evaluate the views of students over Auditory Teaching
and Learning Strategy for an interactive and communicative classroom
environment. To obtain necessary data from participants, we asked two open
ended questions to the participant students: How can you learn foreign language
best in the classroom environment? and What kind of teaching or learning
strategies does your foreign language teacher use and implement in the
classroom?. A qualitative research method was used to evaluate and compare
the views of the students on Auditory Learning and Teaching Strategy in the
classroom. The research was carried out with the participation of fifteen
university students in the cities of Tekirdağ and Erzincan. The views of the
students obtained through interviews suggest that their skills, attitudes and
predispositions to Auditory Learning Style are significative and determinative
factors for learning effectively. The features of learners with Auditory Learning
style include building up more comprehensive sentences, being talkative,
sensitive to sound and music, memorizing the songs fast and easily, being
inclined to learn foreign languages, learning by talking, having difficulty in reading
and writing skills, participating in group discussions, using audiotapes for
language practices. This paper draws attention to the views and practices of
language learners as a means of increasing teachers’ awareness of Auditory
Learning and Teaching in classroom environment.

A study on study habits and academic performance of students Mahwish Rabia,

Naima Mubarak, Hira Tallat, Wajiha Nasir International Journal of Asian Social Science 7
(10), 891-897, 2017 Study habits contribute significantly in the development of
knowledge and perceptual capacities. Study habits tell a person that how much he will
learn and how far he wants to go, and how much he wants to earn. These all could be
decided with the help of one’s study habits, throughout the life. Therefore it is assumed
that study habits are correlates of scholastic or academic achievement. In this study, the
association between study habits and academic performance of students is examined.
Sample of 270 students were taken from two colleges Govt. Allama Iqbal College for
Women, Sialkot and Govt. Technical College for boys, Sialkot. The association between
study habits and academic performance was checked by using chi-square test. The
results showed that there is significant relationship between study habits and academic
performance of the students.

Factors Effecting on Study Habits. Zebun Nisa Khan Online Submission 3

(1), 145-150, 2016 The present study was undertaken with the objectives to find
out the impact of Socio-economic Status as well as sex differences on study
habits of class VII students (100) of Government Colleges of Amroha District.
The effects of two independent variables on study habits of the aforementioned
students were assessed by using two Psychological tests namely Socio-
economic Status Scale (Urban); by Dr. Kulshrestha and Rao’s Study Habits
Inventory. The findings indicated a significant effect of gender on study habits of
the subjects. The effect of Socio-economic Status on study habits was found to
be insignificant. Interaction effect of sex difference and Socio-economic Status
was also not significant.
Influence of Study Habits on Academic Performance of International
College Students in Shanghai. Miguel A Cerna, Ksenia Pavliushchenko Higher
Education Studies 5 (4), 42-55, 2015 The present study estimates the global
validity of existing constructs and serves as the basis for the development of the
Self-Reported Study Habits for International Students (SR-SHI) used to identify
at-risk students in international programs. One-year classroom observations,
recollection of study habits though interviews with high performing students show
that they are mainly from low-context and individualistic countries while most low
performing students come from high-context and collectivistic countries. Among
other aspects, high performing students give opinions based on reading material
and class content, use the expression “I think”, ask questions in class, are on
time, ask for feedback regarding assignments, take notes in class and while
studying, look for the professor after class, seat at the front of the classroom and
attend every class, study in silence and alone at regular times along the whole
semester, read the material about two weeks before the exam, review notes
before the exam, talk about the content with other students. On the other hand,
low performing students remind quite the whole semester, miss at least three
classes per semester, are normally late, sit at the back of the classroom, don’t
take notes in class and never look for the professor after class-hours. It seems
that specific training programs at the start and during the semester as well as
training on cultural intelligence were identified are necessary.
The effect of metacognitive skills training of study strategies on academic
self-efficacy and academic engagement and performance of female students in
Taybad Asma Taghani & Majid Reza Razavi Current Psychology (2021)Cite this
article 616 Accesses 7 Citations Metricsdetails Abstract Academic failure is one
of the most important concerns of teachers, education officials, and families, and
is one of the most common problems in the current education system is that it
wastes tens of millions of dollars a year from the country’s budget. As a result,
the potential forces and assets of society, which are human resources, remain
ineffective. Accordingly, the present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness
of study skills on self-efficacy, academic eagerness, and academic performance.
This research was quasi-experimental having pre-test and post-test design with
the unequal control group. The population included all-female high school
students of Taybad schools in the academic year of 2017–2018.
Study habits as influence of academic performance of university
undergraduates in Nigeria CS Ayodele, DR Adebiyi Research journal in
organizational Psychology & Educational studies 2 (3), 72-75, 2013 This study
examined study habit as a determinant of academic performance of
undergraduates in Nigeria. It also investigated how faculty and gender influence
their study habit. The study employed a descriptive research survey type. The
research instrument was titled” Study habits determinants Questionnaire”. The
face and content validity was ascertained by psychologist and Guidance and
Counselling experts. A reliability coefficient of 0.85 was obtained using split half
method. The population of the study includes all faculties in the university.
Samples were selected through stratified and random sampling techniques. Two
hypotheses were generated and were tested using student t-test and ANOVA at
0.05 level of significance. The descriptive analysis revealed that self concept was
very strong determinant of study habit, so also was method of study, family
background, socio-economic status, peer group and course of study. Again,
gender was found to have no significant difference on undergraduates’ study
habit while on the other hand faculty of undergraduates had a significant
difference on their study habit. The outcome of this study would be of immense
help to undergraduates, helps to improve their study habits skills and in turn
facilitate students’ performance. Improvement in students’ academic
performance will therefore lead to national development as qualitative manpower
will be produced. It was recommended based on the findings that home-front
factors should be thoroughly addressed such that students will be able to
manage other determinants. Also, the school, government and all stakeholders
should make facilities and materials that facilitate studying available to students.
Factors affecting the academic performance of the student nurses of BSU
Sunshine B Alos, Lawrence C Caranto, Juan Jose T David International Journal
of Nursing Science 5 (2), 60-65, 2015 This study aimed to determine the factors
affecting the academic performance of fourth year student nurses. The factors
affecting a student’s academic performance arise from several reasons. In line
with this, this research was conducted to determine the factors that affect the
academic performance of the nursing students which may consequently help in
the improvement of the students and teachers alike. This study may benefit the
students by allowing them to understand better the factors that can affect their
academic performance. They may be able to improve their academic
performance with the findings that are established by this study. A quantitative-
descriptive design was utilized. Self-reporting questionnaire was the main
method used for data gathering. Average weighted mean was used to determine
the level of impact of the different factors affecting the respondents’ academic
performance. The first two (2) items in the personal conditions category are
found to be of high impact. Meanwhile, the last three (3) items in the same
subset fell in the low range. On the other hand, all indicators included in the
category of study habits were considered highly impactful except for the last item
which was ranked rather lower. Student nurses have been discovered to have
rated home-related factors as low in impact. In school-related aspects, the first
six (6) items are of high impact; conversely, the 7th indicator was rated low.
Among the teacher-related-factors, only item 1 was established to be of very high
impact and the rest posed to be highly impactful. In the subset of personal
factors, feeling sleepy in class in class was rated to be of highest impact. The
indicator ‘I study only when there is a quiz’was determined to have the highest
impact among study habits. Meanwhile, among the home-related aspects,‘I live
far from school’was found to be the most impactful. The indicator ‘the time
schedule is followed’was determined to have the greatest effect among the
school-related items. Highest of impact among the five domains were the
teacher-related factors. Based from the findings, it was concluded that several
factors pose a high impact on the academic performance of student nurses, with
teacher-related factors topping the list. Among the five (5) domains, study habits
and school-related factors fall behind the teacher-related factors. Nonetheless,
both categories are still deemed to be highly impactful. Conversely, personal
conditions and home-related factors pose little effect on student nurses’
academic performance.
Factors contributing to academic performance of students in a tertiary
institution in Singapore S Valli Jayanthi, Santhi Balakrishnan, Angela Lim Siok
Ching, Noor Aaqilah Abdul Latiff, AMA Nasirudeen American Journal of
Educational Research 2 (9), 752-758, 2014 This study was conducted to
examine different factors influencing the academic performance of students in a
tertiary institution in Singapore. The main method of data collection was a semi-
structured questionnaire administered to 144 students. The specific objectives of
the study were to determine if factors such as gender, age, nationality of student,
part-time employment, extracurricular activities and interest in pursuing higher
studies affected academic success. The study also examined the learning
methods used by students and how these affected their academic scores. The
students’ cumulative Grade Point Average (cGPA) was used as a measure of
academic performance. The data were analyzed quantitatively and the results
showed that factors such as gender, nationality of student, co-curricular activities
and an interest in pursuing higher degrees affected students’ academic scores.
The use of past year examination papers as a learning method improved
students’ academic scores compared to other methods.
Factors affecting the academic performance of student nurses: A cross-
sectional study Farhan Alshammari, Reynita Saguban, Eddieson Pasay-an,
Ahmed Altheban, Layla Al-Shammari Journal of Nursing Education and Practice
8 (1), 60, 2017 The academic performance of the student nurses is by the
assessment of competence, defined by a student’s ability to demonstrate the
performance of professional skills or behaviors. Despite its predictabilities, there
is no study has been undertaken to determine the factors affecting the academic
performance of student nurses in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This study
employed a quantitative-correlational design. There were 201 student nurses
from the College of Nursing at University of Hail selected using convenience
sampling. A modified survey questionnaire was utilized to gather data. The said
questionnaire was subjected to pilot testing. Content validation and reliability test
were conducted using a Cronbach Alpha which revealed a value of 0.940. Four
types of factors such teacher-related with a mean 4.16, student-related (3.85),
school-related (3.85), and home-related factors (3.54) were observed to have
varying extent of effect on the academic performance of student nurses. Likewise
age, gender, year level, marital status, socio-economic status and previous
school attended by the student nurses showed varying extent of influence on
their academic performance. A significant difference in the extent of effect gender
has on the academic performance of student nurses as indicated by a t-value of
3.591 been revealed. Whereas, no significant difference was observed on the
extent of effect type of school attended had on the academic performance of the
student nurses as indicated by a t-value of 0.846; p-value:. 398, age (t-value:
1.768; p-value:. 155); year level (t-value: 0.530; p-value:. 589); marital status (t-
value: 1.813; p-value:. 166), and socio-economic status (t-value: 0.031; p-value:.
970). The identified factors significantly impact on the academic performance of
student nurses. This finding is significant as it can be used by school
administrators and teachers alike as basis in designing and implementing an
intervention program geared towards an improved academic performance among
student nurses.

Education and Information Studies 5 (1), 17-24, 2015 This study attempts to find
out perception on study habits of undergraduate students and analyze
relationship between study habits and academic performance and various other
factors that affects study habits. It is generally believed that a student learns
effective study habits in school. So college students are generally assumed to
have effective study habits, but, the environment of school and college are very
different and need of effective study habits is even more at college level as
compared to school. So, this paper consists of details about why effective study
habits are needed at college level and effective study habits that a college
student must have in order to learn and eventually score better. Also, we
conducted a survey in Rajdhani College, Delhi University to analyze study habits
of students.
