1st Assignment
1. (a) The ambient air temperatures during summer and winter in Siliguri are 40 oC
o
and 10 C respectively. Find the values of Carnot COP for an air conditioner for cooling and
heating, corresponding to refrigeration temperatures of 5oC for summer and 55 oC for winter.
(b) If water from the cooling tower at 30 oC is used as a cooling medium with 3
o
C temperature differential for air-conditioning in summer, what will be Carnot COP for
cooling.
(c) Also, find the theoretical power consumption per ton of refrigeration in each
case.
2. A Samsung refrigerator has working temperatures in the evaporator and condenser coils of
-30 and 50 oC, respectively. What is the maximum possible COP of the refrigerator?
If the actual refrigerator has a refrigerating efficiency of 0.75, calculate the
refrigerating effect in kW and TR per kW of power input.
3. A reversed Carnot cycle has a COP for cooling of 4. Determine the temperature ratio.
If the power consumption of the cycle is 7.5 kW, determine the refrigerating
capacity of the machine in TR.
If the cycle is used as heat pump with the same ratio of temperatures,
determine its COP.
4. An air conditioning system is operating in an ambient of 45 oC. The room temperature is
maintained at 25 oC. Determine the power consumption of the system per ton of refrigeration
if it is,
(a) Air-cooled as in window type air conditioner
(b) Winter-cooled as in a central air-conditioning plant.
The cooling water from cooling tower is available at 30 oC. Assume suitable operating
temperatures. Actual COP of the system is only 50% of the COP of the reversible cycle.
5. Determine the power consumption, of a domestic refrigerator it its refrigerating capacity is
1/8 TR. It is operating in an ambient of 40 oC. Temperature in the freezer must be maintained
at -15 oC. COP of the system is half the Carnot COP. Assume suitable condenser and
evaporator temperature.
6. The food compartment of a refrigerator, shown in Fig., is maintained at 4°C by removing
heat from it at a rate of 360 kJ/min. If the required power input to the refrigerator is 2 kW,
determine (a) the coefficient of performance of the refrigerator and (b) the rate of heat
rejection to the room that houses the refrigerator.

7. A heat pump is used to meet the heating requirements of a house and maintain it at 20°C.
On a day when the outdoor air temperature drops to -2°C, the house is estimated to lose heat
at a rate of 80,000 kJ/h. If the heat pump under these conditions has a COP of 2.5, determine
(a) the power consumed by the heat pump and (b) the rate at which heat is absorbed from the
cold outdoor air.

8. A household refrigerator runs one-fourth of the time and removes heat from the food
compartment at an average rate of 800 kJ/h. If the COP of the refrigerator is 2.2, determine
the power the refrigerator draws when running.

9. A household refrigerator that has a power input of 450 W and a COP of 2.5 is to cool
five large watermelons, 10 kg each, to 8°C. If the watermelons are initially at 20°C,
determine how long it will take for the refrigerator to cool them. The watermelons can be
treated as water whose specific heat is 4.2 kJ/kg · °C. Is your answer realistic or
optimistic? Explain.

10. The drinking water needs of an office are met by cooling tab water in a refrigerated water
fountain from 23 to 6°C at an average rate of 10 kg/h. If the COP of this refrigerator is 3.1,
the required power input to this refrigerator is______

11. A heat pump is absorbing heat from the cold outdoors at 5°C and supplying heat to a
house at 22°C at a rate of 18,000 kJ/h. If the power consumed by the heat pump is 2.5 kW,
the coefficient of performance of the heat pump is____________

12. A refrigeration cycle is executed with R-134a under the saturation dome between the
pressure limits of 1.6 and 0.2 MPa. If the power consumption of the refrigerator is 3 kW, the
maximum rate of heat removal from the cooled space of this refrigerator is________

13. A commercial refrigerator with refrigerant-134a as the working fluid is used to keep the
refrigerated space at-30°C by rejecting its waste heat to cooling water that enters the
condenser at 18°C at a rate of 0.25 kg/s and leaves at 26°C. The refrigerant enters the
condenser at 1.2 MPa and 65°C and leaves at 42°C. The inlet state of the compressor is 60
kPa and _34°C and the compressor is estimated to gain a net heat of 450 W from the
surroundings. Determine (a) the quality of the refrigerant at the evaporator inlet, (b) the
refrigeration load, (c) the COP of the refrigerator, and (d) the theoretical maximum
refrigeration load for the same power input to the compressor.

14. An ammonia ice plant operates between a condenser temperature of 40 oC and


evaporation temperature of -15 oC. It produces 12 tons of ice in a day basis from water at 30
o
C to ice at -5 oC. Determine (i) Capacity of the plant (ii) Mass flow of refrigerant (iii) The

discharge temperature (iv) The compressor dimensions if volumetric efficiency = 70%,
N=1500 rpm and L/D=1.2 (v) Horsepower of the motor if mechanical efficiency is 95% and
adiabatic efficiency is 85%. (vi) The theoretical and actual COP.

15. A 15 TR Freon 22 VCR system operates between a condenser temperature of 40 oC


and evaporator temperature of 5 oC. Determine the compressor discharge temperature. Also
determine the theoretical piston displacement and power consumption of the compressor per
ton of refrigeration.

16. A refrigerator uses refrigerant-134a as the working fluid and operates on an ideal vapor-
compression refrigeration cycle between 0.12 and 0.7 MPa. The mass flow rate of the
refrigerant is 0.05 kg/s. Show the cycle on a T-s diagram with respect to saturation lines.
Determine (a) the rate of heat removal from the refrigerated space and the power input to the
compressor, (b) the rate of heat rejection to the environment, and (c) the coefficient of
performance.
17. Consider a 300 kJ/min refrigeration system that operates on an ideal vapor-compression
refrigeration cycle with refrigerant-134a as the working fluid. The refrigerant enters the
compressor as saturated vapor at 140 kPa and is compressed to 800 kPa. Show the cycle on a
T-s diagram with respect to saturation lines, and determine
(a) the quality of the refrigerant at the end of the throttling process, (b) the coefficient of
performance, and (c) the power input to the compressor.
18. Refrigerant-12 enters the compressor of a refrigerator as superheated vapor at 0.14 MPa
and -10°C at a rate of 0.12 kg/s, and it leaves at 0.7 MPa and 50°C. The refrigerant is cooled
in the condenser to 24°C and 0.65 MPa, and it is throttled to 0.15 MPa. Disregarding any heat
transfer and pressure drops in the connecting lines between the components, show the cycle
on a T-s diagram with respect to saturation lines, and determine (a) the rate of heat removal
from the refrigerated space and the power input to the compressor, (b) the isentropic
efficiency of the compressor, and (c) the COP of the refrigerator.
19. Refrigerant-134a enters the compressor of a refrigerator at 140 kPa and -10°C at a rate of
0.3 m3/min and leaves at 1 MPa. The isentropic efficiency of the compressor is 78 percent.
The refrigerant enters the throttling valve at 0.95 MPa and 30°C and leaves the evaporator as
saturated vapor at -18.5°C. Show the cycle on a T-s diagram with respect to saturation lines,
and determine (a) the power input to the compressor, (b) the rate of heat removal from the
refrigerated space, and (c) the pressure drop and rate of heat gain in the line between the
evaporator and the compressor.
20. A refrigerator that operates on the ideal vapour compression cycle with refrigerant-22 is
to maintain the refrigerated space at -10°C while rejecting heat to the environment at 25°C.
Select reasonable pressures for the evaporator and the condenser, and explain why you chose
those values.
