ABSTRACT
This study aims to assess the satisfaction of the guests during the Family Day and to

determine the extent of the implementation of the policies and guidelines for succeeding Family

Day celebrations. Family Day is the time when the family and friends of the seminarians gather

as one ICS family. In this gathering, there is joy and celebration in everyone’s faces as they bond

as one happy family. However, in the midst of this festive event, there comes the concern of how

the program is organized and executed. For the past years, the policies and guidelines have been

up to the organizers with due word from the form the formators. Thus, this research aims to

determine the level of satisfaction of the guests during the program as well as what are the

suggested policies that could be implemented so as to keep the program of family Day organized

and enjoyable for all. The researchers need to answer this problem by conducting this research.

To achieve this goal, they employed the quantitative research method that involved surveying the

guests. The researchers need to answer this problem because Family Day is an important event in

Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary. By doing so, it could help to improve the celebration

of Family Day in the years to come, making the program more organized and enjoyable for all.

The descriptive quantitative method-using exploratory research constitutes the

methodology employed in this research i.e. the data can be transposed into numbers, in a formal,

objective, systematic process to obtain information and describe variables and their relationships.

It is directive for it will yield accurate results from the data gathered in the survey forms

distributed.

The results the researchers found out was that the guests were satisfied with the

celebration of Family Day 2017, and the policy that the dorms will be locked when there is an
ongoing program was the policy that the guests would like to be implemented with the utmost

propriety.

CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

A. Introduction

Anyone will love something if a plan comes together. Family Day is an annual event in the

Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary, in which, family and friends gather to show off their

talents, to bond as one family in Christ. It is a time for celebration, laughter, and happiness. In

line with the First Sunday of Advent, the entire ICS Family gathers to rejoice at the coming of

the Lord Jesus as the Redeemer and His Second Coming at the end of time.

However, while engaging in this festive event, there are certain policies and guidelines that the

participants would have to follow. After all, it is best to maintain order throughout

the program so that there would be no confusion and delay. Unfortunately, for the past years,

without any written policies, it often falls to the organizers to arrange the order of

the program along with the policies and guidelines, with some intervention from the

formators. The consequence is that confusion and delay occur within the program, which affects

the smooth flow of the program and the overall enjoyment of the guests. Then the guests would

not enjoy Family Day anymore.

Therefore, the researchers conducted the study on determining the policies and guidelines that

the formators ought to implement during Family Day, as well as finding ways on how to improve
the quality of the program by tallying the level of satisfaction of the guests. This is so that future

Family Day programs be more enjoyable than ever before and memorable.

B. Statement of the Problem

The following main problem and sub-problems are as follows:

Main Problem:

 What is the level of satisfaction of the guests during Family Day?

Sub-problems

1. What are the suggested policies and guidelines that could help to improve the
program of Family Day?
2. How effective is the Family Day program without a standard policy?

C. Conceptual Framework

This study employed the descriptive quantitative research method. Descriptive

quantitative research, also known as statistical research, describes data and characteristics about

the studied population or phenomenon. This type of research focuses on the survey given to the

respondents to be able to gather data that will give accurate conclusion and recommendation to

the researchers.
Although the data description is factual, accurate and systematic, the research cannot

describe what caused a situation. It is therefore not possible to use Descriptive research in order

to create a causal relationship, where one variable affects another. In other words, one used

descriptive research to have a low requirement for internal validity.

The research utilizes the description of frequencies, averages and other statistical

calculations. Often the best approach, prior to writing descriptive research, is to conduct a survey

investigation. Quantitative research often has the aim of gathering numerical data and

researchers may follow-up with examinations of why the observations exist and what the

implications of the findings are.

In short, descriptive quantitative research deals with everything that is observable and

countable. However, there are always restrictions to that. One’s research must have an impact on

the lives of the people around.

The study will also utilize the Input, Process, Output (IPO) method. The Input consists of

the respondent’s profile such as gender, age, educational attainment, profession, and the survey

forms include the rate of the satisfaction in the different areas during the Family Day and the

opinion of the respondents regarding the proposed policies. The process consists of the different

methods; survey questionnaires and statistical analysis of input variables and interpretation and

analysis of data. The output is the Developed Organization of the Family Day.

D. Assumptions
The study was anchored on the basis that the results of the survey were fair indices of the

subjects’ level of satisfaction and willingness to implement the suggested policies and

guidelines. Likewise, the research relied on the assumption that the researchers accomplished the

questionnaire effectively.

E. Hypothesis

The age and gender of the guests will not affect the results of satisfaction of the guests during

the Family Day 2017 and its organization. In addition, the policies will not affect the

organization of the annual family day.

F. Scope and Delimitation

This study is an assessment of the policies and guidelines during Family Day. It aims to

answer the questions: what are the currently observed general policies during Family Day and

what are the suggested policies and guidelines that could help to improve the program of Family

Day. By doing so, it can set in stone a general policy that the future organizers of Family Day

would need to follow so as to maintain orderliness and avoid confusion and delay.

Alongside this, the researchers are also evaluating the satisfaction of the visitors to help

improve the overall quality of the program and enjoyment of the guests during Family Day for

the years to come.

The data gathered to answer the research problems will be dependent on the answers that

were given by the registered visitors through survey forms distributed to the respondents. In
addition, the researchers will survey only the registered visitors; any walk-in visitors will not be

included. Thus, the respondents will consist mostly of the faculty, seminarians, their parents,

relatives, and friends who are registered for the Family Day 2017. These form the guests of

Family Day.

G. Significance of the Study

The researchers conducted the study; first, help the Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary

Community to improve the Family Day in terms of applying policies, based on the satisfaction of

the guests. Second, this study can help the guests and seminarians to obey the policies and

remain composed and organized throughout the entire program. There would be no more

confusion and delay and all would be in one place and not scattered throughout the compound.

Family Day, is in no doubt one of the most significant programs the seminary has in the

month of December, it is that one time where the family members and friends of the seminarians,

as well as the whole ICS Family, gets a chance to be together and bond. It is in line with the

season of Advent when we rejoice and await the coming of our Lord. Any confusion and delay to

this entire program could affect the future of Family Day.

For example, if for five consecutive years, the program started very late and the visitors did

not like the program, then in the future, fewer people would attend Family Day in the following

years. Alternatively, if the program was terrible, the reputation of the formators will be shaken.

People would give negative feedback to the entire program and this would turn into a larger

issue. Then the entire program would be questioned altogether.

Thus, the results of this opus would become an objective starting point for future Family Day

celebrations so that it may be more enjoyable for all that it has been for the past few years.

I. Review of Related Literature

The works used in this section are related to topics regarding Families, Seminary Formation

and, Policy Making which is essential on understanding how these factors affect each other. In

this research, the Annual Family Day of ICS has been assessed. Family Day is a common

activity especially in schools because it promotes developing close family ties with each family

and encourages opening one’s family to another family, which will make a better and happier

community.

The Seminary:

7
OED Online, loc. cit.
8
Student Handbook, op. cit., page 2.
As mentioned by Pope Pius XI in his encyclical AD CATHOLICI SACERDOTII, those

chosen for the priestly formation are the cream of the crop 9. This is to say that seminarians are

chosen by their formators to be worth each time they are to proceed to the next level in the

seminary. Their ordination cannot be endorsed lest they prove worthy enough and have fulfilled

their roles as a seminarian. All the aspects of the seminary formation are fulfilled worthily,

namely academics, spirituality, intellectually, and pastorally. Through the many schedules that

they go through, the seminarians become organized and more disciplined. 10 In the end, Pius XI

reminds all that the priest follows the example of Christ.11 Therefore, the formation in the

seminary is all about the human person, making the future shepherds into the person they ought

to be.

Throughout the years of the church, the seminary remains to be an institution that serves to

hone the formation of future priests.12 While at the same time, incorporating her methods and

techniques to the ways of the world and the sign of the times to continue the influx of vocations

to the priesthood.

The researchers define the seminary as a school for students or seminarians who want to

become a priest in the near future. A seminarian is formed in the seminary by the formators.

They are called formators or priests-formators because they are the one who formed the

seminarians to become good Catholics. “A slogan used by educators today is to take where there

are at.”13 It explains that every school has a slogan to advertise their school and take the people

where their future says, when you study in the university or any school, there are many students

but when you study here in the seminary, you will see that there are few students. The difference

of seminary and school is that seminary has the highest standard for the student, for example, the

seminary requires high grade and when you study in the seminary, you are required to study very

hard. On the other hand, when you study in the university, they have a standard for the students,

but the problem is that the teacher or the professor could not teach the students very well because

they are many in the class, unlike here in the seminary, you will not be bored in the class.

“It is a brave person who would give a definitive description of the priesthood for which
14
the contemporary seminarian is being prepared.” Every seminarian needs a brave mind and

heart to pass the trials inside the seminary and they need to be formed by formators for the

preparation for the priesthood. A priest is the one who imitates Christ as himself when he

presides Holy Eucharistic Celebration. A priest is the one who preaches the Good News or

Gospel to other people. According to EG 132: “Proclaiming the Gospel message to diverse

cultures also involves proclaiming it to professional, scientific and academic circles. This means

an encounter between faith, reason and the sciences with a view to developing innovative

approaches and arguments on the issue of credibility, a creative apologetics which would

encourage greater openness to the Gospel on the part of all.” It explains here that the Gospel is

not only for the Catholics but in all the culture.

The Family and Seminary:

The Family is the smallest unit of the community that plays a key role in every individual’s

upbringing. A healthy, loving family produces healthy individuals. Thus, love must always be

present in every family. This love will be the foundation of all the good things the family will do.

The Catholic Church promotes having a healthy. In a recent encyclical by Pope Francis entitled

14
Ibid, pg. 453.
‘Amoris Laetitia’, he addressed the importance of love on the family and encouraged the families

in their daily commitments and challenges. In the said encyclical, the Pope has addressed many

issues regarding families.

The encyclical started with this sentence: “The joy of love experienced by families is also the

joy of the Church.”15 Procreation has always been one of the roles of the sacrament of

Matrimony. Thus, the Church promotes having a family to which love will be shared by parents

and children. Today, the sacredness of family has been neglected. There is the incidence of a

broken family or single parenthood that resulted from the loss of love. Broken families often

result from conflict between the parents. It is normal for conflicts to arise, but the love must

always be present because love endures all things with a positive attitude.16

Therefore, in the seminary, the love of the family is also given importance through activities

like Family Day. The annual family day has become an official program, in the seminary

formation of the minor seminary.

How can we value the importance of the family? Saint John Paul II understands the core

or the centrality of the family. The Holy Father mentioned that the family is “the place where the

education of the person primarily takes place.”17 In line with this continuous celebration of

Family Day in the seminary, education for the seminarians also takes place, as stated by Saint

John Paul II. Clearly, it is essential celebrating the said event because it benefits, not only the

child but the whole family itself.

This book ‘Familia et Vita’ is trying to disclose that the family is the key to the

information of the culture of life. Every human person is brought into the world through the

loving arms of a family. The family binds us to the rest of the human community. 18 It is evidently

seen that in this book, it is reminding and teaching everyone that family plays a significant role

in every human being. In relation to the Family Day, through this kind of celebrations, it binds us

or cements our relationship to the rest of the human community and serves as a tangible reminder

of the social nature of a person.

Policy Making:

Another related factor in this research are the policies implemented in the event. With the

help of the policies, the program will be efficiently done.

All the policies can be directly attributed to the formation being done to the seminarians in

their seminary formation. In many ways, the seminary is more than just a boarding school,

designed to prepare young men for the priesthood.19 It is a place where the human aspect of a

young man is molded, in such a way that they are able to respond to Christ’s initial call. This, in

turn, strengthens one vocation and faith so that by the end of their stay in the seminary, they have

become more mature and serve as a role model for future priests or at least good Christians of the

future.,

In terms of policies, there was the consideration of health. During the family day, there

must be a certain policy that must be implemented for the event to become more effective as

expected by the guests. The policy must include the concerns in the health of the guest of the

family day. For this reason, the researchers consulted some books related to the policy-making in

health, by which it will lead the researchers in a positive outcome in making possible policy to be

implemented during the family day in the seminary.

18
Familia et Vita, op.cit., page 18.
19
OED Online, loc. cit.
The goal of the seminary was directly related to the goal of the New Guinea in terms of

health issue, to have a safe, eco-friendly and healthy organization of the annual gathering of the

ICS community which is the Family Day.

In choosing policy there must be the consideration of the place and gathering where the

policy will be implemented20. The policy that will be implemented must help the organizer to

accommodate the needs of the guest of the family day including the budget 21. Having the

infirmary inside the event will help the policy regarding health become effective.

The policy regarding health should have the support of the local government by

providing at least one medical team for the event, in case of unexpected injuries and accidents

due to some activities of and crowded place in the Family Day. Included in the study, the policy

must be appropriate for the location and the people involved in the certain event. It is a must that

the policy being implemented be compatible in terms of facilities and situation.

CHAPTER TWO

RESEARCH METHODS

A. Research Design

The researchers used the Quantitative type of research as they gather numerical data and

statistical tables based on the survey the researchers made during the Family Day 2017. The

researchers also used Exploratory Descriptive research as they distributed survey forms to the

respondents.

The quantitative type of research-utilized data that can be transposed into numbers, in a

formal, objective, systematic process to obtain information and describe variables and their

relationships.22 In connection with the statistical analysis, the researchers arranged the data,

gathered and formulated the tables. This made it possible for them to recognize the result of their

conducted survey. This kind of research method helped the researchers to measure the gathered

data from the different variables.23

As mentioned above, the researchers also used the exploratory descriptive type of research.

This kind of research examines the relevant factors in detail to arrive at an appropriate

description of the reality of the existing situation. On the other hand, Descriptive research

provides an accurate account of characteristics of a particular individual, event or group in real-

life situations. It was in connection with the survey forms as the researchers assessed the age,

23
Ibid, page 49.
gender, educational attainment and the profession of the respondents. Through the exploratory

descriptive research method, the researchers were able to collect new information that may affect

the result of the study.

B. Research Locale

The research was done inside the Immaculate Conception Seminary in Tabe, Guiguinto,

Bulacan. The researchers chose to assess the Family Day 2017, for they were required to conduct

the survey to assess the satisfaction of the parents and guests who attended the event. This

seminary was the Diocesan Seminary in Bulacan, this was composed of different departments

such as the Junior High School Department and the Senior High School Department in the Minor

Seminary, and the Propaedeutic Year, Philosophy, and the Theology Departments in the Major

Seminary. Although there is an event in the given place, the researchers still pursued the

assessment, as it was the only chance for them to gather data.

Aside from forming seminarians to become a future priest, the event has the goal to have

family bonding together with the parents of the seminarians. From this perspective of the

seminary, it leads them to have Family Day annually.

C. Research Participants

The researchers conducted the assessment right after the program of the Family Day as they

distribute the survey forms to the family members of the seminarians who attended the event.

The research population for this study comprised the entire adolescent guests, up to the elderly

guests. Researchers give survey forms to the parents as well as the siblings of the seminarians. In

connection with this, they also gave survey forms to the Formators, personnel, faculty members,
and friends of the seminarians. The researchers gather data using the purposive sampling method

for them to be able to get precise responses from the guests and parents during the Family Day.

The researchers used to distribute the survey forms to the said population as they have the

compatibility answer the question prepared by the researchers that were inter-related to the study

regarding the level of the satisfaction and probable policy during the Family Day 2017.

D. Research Instruments

The instrument of this research makes the study more efficient and precise with no bias

results. The researchers used one instrument to make this study possible. The instrument used to

conduct the study was through the help of survey-questionnaire made by the researchers. This

questionnaire consists of two parts. Part One was about the policy-making which consisted of (5)

questions. The second part was regarding the satisfaction of the said topic, consisting of (11)

questions. These survey forms were designed to gather information about the respondents such

as their Name, Age, Educational Attainment, Profession, and Gender.

E. Data Gathering Procedure

This study required an interactive process with the researchers and the respondents. For the

researchers to be able to gather data from the respondents they first formulated the research

problems that became their main ground in the study.

After formulating the research problem, the researchers made a list of the information from

the respondents that may help them in forming the answer to the research problem. To be able to

gather the information needed, the researchers allowed themselves in distributing survey forms

to the persons involved in the Family Day 2017. These forms were distributed right after the

program so that the respondents are knowledgeable about the question being asked in the survey
forms. After the respondents answered the questionnaire, the researchers collected all the survey

forms distributed.

The gathered data underwent analysis that helped the researchers to formulate the study about

the level of the satisfaction in Family Day 2017 and the probable policies that may be

implemented in the annual event.

The researchers also made a statistical table that directly showed the result of the assessment

being done through the questionnaires.

F. Ethical Considerations

This opus is grounded in basic truths and nothing else but it. Any biases with regards to the

results of this study and all of the results gathered are strictly from the opinions of the

participants. The role of the researchers is limited to surveying recording and presentation of

results. Opinions regarding the results of the study may vary and the researchers respect this very

opinion. After all, it is the participants (those being surveyed) who will determine the outcome of

the results of this opus and not the researchers.

For the researchers, it would be unethical to harm anyone with regard to this research in any

retrospect. This includes deceiving the person about the true nature of the study, embarrassing

the respondent by any means, manipulating the data, emotional threat and invading their

privacy.24 Respondents may also be violated by being part of the study without their knowledge,

or by violating the promise of confidentiality. Thus the researchers will make it clear that they

respect the privacy, dignity, and intellectual property of the respondents. That is why in the

questionnaire, they have made a clear disclaimer that the private information of the respondents

(Mandaluyong: National Book Store, 2012), page 233.
will be respected and any significant information in this opus will be sealed and treated with

utmost respect.25

Quantitative Research, from the beginning to its conclusions, is based on numbers. There are

the old sayings that numbers don’t lie. Should any error rise from the researchers’ findings, then

the researchers must have committed an error in the tallying process. However, as stated in the

Assumptions, the researchers determined that they have accomplished their sources effectively

without error.

Originality is the key to a work. To further strengthen any claims made in this opus, the

researcher will utilize various sources in expressing certain viewpoints regarding the topic. The

researchers carefully cited each source to avoid plagiarism and maintain originality. The

researchers also respect the views of their sources, even going so far to asking permission from

the authors if need be.26

The researchers able to gather enough data to present the frequency distribution table of the

age range of the guests who attended the Family last December 3, 2017. As presented in the table

there are sixty (60) respondents who accurately gave their age during the year 2017. From this

data above, the researchers analyze and solve for the mean or the average age of the respondents

who attended the Family Day 2017.

The researchers found out that the average age of the respondents was around 36 years old,

the estimated age of 36.05 years old. This means that there is almost balance number of

teenagers and elders from the group of respondents.

The researchers also able to solve for the modal age of the respondents, which is 18 years old.

This result leads the researcher in conclusion that there are more teenagers who were included in

the survey done by the researchers.

female guests rather than male guests.

b. Age: The age range of the guests during Family Day from 15 years old to 65 years old and it

has the average of 36 years old. Most of the guests are around the age 18 years old.

c. Satisfaction Level: The guests’ satisfaction level appears to be high satisfaction as the

research shows that there is the range of average from 4.0 to 4.6.

d. Ranking of Possible Policies: The policy about the security of dormitories became the most

important possible policy that may be applied to the succeeding Family Day as it got the first

rank from the survey. On the other hand, policy about the amount of food got the lowest

ranking from the respondents.

B. Conclusions

1. The Family Day did last December 3, 2017, became successful in terms of satisfaction

of the guests. Base on the average or mean of every question on the survey forms

regarding the satisfaction of the guests it shows that there is high satisfaction among

the guest in different fields and events during the recent Family Day last December 3,

2017.

2. Based on the ranking gathered from the possible policies that may apply to the

succeeding Family Day it shows that the Guests gives much importance to the policy

regarding the security of dormitories. Also base on the ranking, it shows that the guest

didn’t give much importance to policy regarding the number of foods. The policy

regarding the policy must apply to the succeeding gathering of the Family Day.

3. As shown in the research there are larger numbers of female guests than male guests.

The researchers concluded that most the guest of the Family Day was consist of

mothers, female cousins, and siblings of the seminarian and female friends of the

seminarians.

4. The guests want to have a new date and schedule for the gathering of the Family Day

as the satisfaction on time and schedule of the Family Day got the Lowest average

among the questions regarding satisfaction.

C. Recommendations

1. There is a need to reconsider the date for Family Day as the date and time of Family Day

received the lowest score in the level of satisfaction of the guests during Family Day

2017. If necessary, during meetings, a later date should be picked so that more guests can

attend and that gathering Family Day will not have to be a hassle for the guests.

2. It is recommended to conduct surveys yearly during Family Day to evaluate the

celebration for that year. This would also serve as a basis the organizers could use on

how to further improve future celebration of Family Day.

3. It is also recommended that the formators implement the suggested policies so as to make

the celebration of Family Day more organized, and so that confusion and delay be

avoided.
