Effects of Social Media

Social media provides a platform for making friends in a easier way. One ofthe

effects of social media is easier to create friends. In the last ten years it very difficult

to link with individuals unless you are an outgoing type who is in a position to

converse with everyone and anyone ata party. The increase in mobile phones alter

this, linking people in a different way, although social networking rose and the new

friendship idea changed. It is generally possible to many friends on social media.

They are not close friends that one can spend time with but they are nonetheless

friends. In this world of today you may have friends that you have never met in your
entire life.

Moreover, social network sites can assist you keep and make friends. Social

media promotes empathy. Every persons spends

Each of us spends a little too long talking about ourselves on social networking sites. Which
is perfectly natural. We’re sharing our lives—the ups and downs, the twists and turns—with
people we think will care.

They generally do care, and will tell you so. They will listen to what you have to say, and
help you deal with any problems you may be facing. If this isn’t the case, then you may want
to find new friends.

The point is that by all of us sharing our experiences, both good and bad, on social
networking sites, we’re able to empathize with each other. A friend may have gone through a
similar ordeal that you are currently going through, and they will be able to help you get
through it.

You’ll also be able to see for yourself that they made it out of the other side, that this issue
didn’t derail them, and that they are perhaps better for the experience. Which is why social
media is good for you.

Social networking sites can act as a kind of group therapy session.

Our time is being stretched thinner and thinner by work and family commitments. But social
networking sites offer a chance to communicate in a speedy and efficient manner, especially
when everyone involved is familiar with social media slang.

Writing a tweet takes all of 20 seconds, and with cross-posting to other social networks
switched on, that update reaches everyone you want it to reach (and probably more besides)
in an instant.

One of the reasons many people dislike making phone calls is the unnecessary banter they
necessitate. You can’t just say what you want to say and then hang up. Because doing so is
seen as rude. Instead, you have to swap pleasantries before saying what you want to say, and
then swap more pleasantries before the conversation comes to a natural conclusion.

Social networking sites allow you to live a life unhindered by small talk.
4. Social Media Makes the World Seem Smaller

It isn’t just your inner circle of close friends and even closer family members that social
networking sites allow you to communicate with easily and effectively. One of the good
things about social media is its power to open the world up to you, making it a smaller place
than it has ever been before.

So much so that I actually haven’t a clue where many of my contacts reside. When it comes to
social networks everyone is equal, regardless of location.

Family members living abroad can be kept abreast of the latest happenings in your world as
quickly as those living next door. Friends you haven’t seen since school, and who have since
moved away, are able to keep in touch. Social networking sites mean someone’s physical
location has become a lot less important.

Social networking sites have made the world a smaller place.

5. Social Media Helps You Build Relationships

There is no doubting that having social networking in our lives can lead to relationships
breaking up. But there is another side to the story, which is that people are moving onto other,
perhaps better, relationships. Social networks can put you (back) in touch with people who
you have lots in common with, and that common ground is often the starting point for long-
lasting relationships.

As painful as breakups can be, they can sometimes be the right thing for all concerned.
What’s to say that the new relationship, founded on the steps of Facebook, isn’t the one that
will last? Even if it doesn’t turn into a spectacular coupling, it could be the friendship that is
needed at the time. Which has to be a positive thing.

Social networking sites can help foster friendships and more.

6. Social Media Helps You Find Common Ground

As previously mentioned, social networking sites can help you find people you share interests
with. Facebook, for example, asks you to list who and what you are interested in right from
the start. This makes it much easier to find common ground with other users.

On Twitter you should be following those who have something to say that you’re interested
in, making connections with like-minded individuals much easier than you would offline.
This does require the sharing of information and giving up a certain amount of privacy.
Which is enough for some people to reject social networking outright. Keeping key personal
information private is necessary, but sharing your likes and dislikes and interests and
obsessions can actually contribute to an open society.

Social networking sites make fitting in easier, as long as you open up a little.

Why Is Social Media Good for Society?

As with most things in life, there are positive and negative sides to social networking. My
ultimate belief is that when used in moderation, with checks and balances on how younger
people in particular are using them, social networking sites are neither good or evil. Instead,
they’re somewhere in between.

Does this make you feel better about social networking sites and the effect they could be
having on society? Or will you remain wary in spite of these examples of the positive impact
of social networking sites?

To provide some much-needed balance, we’ve looked at the pros and cons of social media.
If they resonate with your personal experience of online networking, consider using these tips
to spend less time on social media.

The Pros and Cons of Social Media

How Social Media Is Bad for You

Let’s explore the darker side of social media and exactly how (and why) it’s bad for you.
You’ll be surprised to learn the negative effects of social media are both physical and mental.
It can change your perception of the world and yourself, and not always for the better.

Don’t believe us? Then read on to find out some of the negative effects of social media. And
if you recognize any of them as your own symptoms it may be time to consider stop using
social media altogether.

1. Depression and Anxiety

Do you spend more than two hours per day on social media? Spending too long on social
networking sites could be adversely affecting your mood. In fact, you’re more likely to report
poor mental health, including symptoms of anxiety and depression.

So how to use social media without causing yourself psychological distress? If you turn to
the same research (and common sense), the recommended amount of time you should spend
on social networks is half an hour per day. So, as with so many things in life, it’s all about
moderation.

2. Cyberbullying
Before social media, bullying was something only done face-to-face. However, now, someone
can be bullied online anonymously. Today everyone knows what cyberbullying is, and most
of us have seen what it can do to a person. And since screens hide our faces, you can end
up being a jerk on social media and other websites without realizing it.

While social media made making friends easier, it also made it easier for predators to find
victims. The anonymity that social networks provide can be used by the perpetrators to gain
people’s trust and then terrorize them in front of their peers.

These online attacks often leave deep mental scars and even drive people to suicide in some
cases. You’ll be surprised to find out that cyberbullying isn’t just affecting kids, but also full
grown adults.

3. FOMO (Fear of Missing Out)

Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) is a phenomenon that was born at the same time as Facebook—
and it’s one of the most common negative effects of social media. FOMO is basically a form
of anxiety that you get when you’re scared of missing out on a positive experience or
emotions that someone else is getting.

This fear is constantly fueled by your social media engagement. The more you use social
networks, the more likely you are to see that someone is having more fun that you are right
now. And that’s exactly what causes FOMO.

4. Unrealistic Expectations

This one probably comes as no surprise, but social media helps you to form unrealistic
expectations of life and friendships. The networks that do it most are Facebook, Instagram,
and Snapchat. Those are the social media platforms that severely lack online authenticity.

One simple way out of this is for everyone to quit lying on social media. But in the era of
Instagram celebrities and YouTubers who earn millions, that isn’t going to happen anytime
soon.

5. Negative Body Image

Speaking of Instagram celebrities, if you look at popular Instagram accounts, you’ll find
beautiful people wearing expensive clothes on their perfect bodies.

Today, body image is an issue for many people of both sexes. Of course, seeing those perfect
in accordance with the society standards people on a daily basis makes you conscious about
how different you look from those pictures. And not everyone comes to the right conclusions
in this situation.

6. Unhealthy Sleep Patterns

On top of increased rates of anxiety and depression, spending too much time on social media
can lead to poor sleep. Numerous studies have shown that increased use of social media has a
negative effect on your sleep quality.

If you feel like your sleep patterns have become irregular and that this is affecting your
productivity, try and avoid spending a significant amount of time on social media.

7. General Addiction

Social media is often described as being more addictive than cigarettes and alcohol, with the
worst social media apps being Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok when it comes to
addiction.

Don’t know if you’re addicted to your social networks? Think when was the last time you
went a full day without checking your social media accounts? Do you feel rejected if
someone unfollows you? What if your favorite social networks completely disappeared
tomorrow; would it make you feel empty and depressed?

If you just realized you’re addicted to social media, don’t worry, as most of us are there with
you in varying degrees. And it’s not necessarily a reason to go and wipe yourself off all those
social networking platforms.

However, if you think quitting is the best solution for you, we won’t stop you. In fact, one of
our writers tried quitting social media once, and it was an interesting experience.
