Reflective Essay on Communicative Grammar Approach

Communication is one of the most critical aspects in our lives. It determines the
relationships that have been formed with individuals in personal and professional life. Good
communication provides the basis for trust and respect to develop. This also helps to better
understand the individual and the meaning of the conversation. Individuals also assume that their
cognitive capabilities are even better than they really are.

In order to interact efficiently, one must consider the feeling behind the information being
spoken. Knowing how to connect efficiently will strengthen one's interaction at home, at work and
in civil affairs. Learning relational techniques such as listening, non-verbal relational and conflict
control can help to strengthen one's interaction with others.

Accordingly, Communicative Grammar Approach puts the emphasis on the real contact
operation. This provides the speaker all the means to successfully express the desired message.

On the basis of a Communicative Grammar Approach to teaching second / foreign

languages, language concepts should not be learned in isolation but combined into five language
skills: hearing, communicating, reading, writing and viewing. Seek to let the students still follow
a system in both oral and written form. The students must grasp a grammatical form and be able
to use it naturally in a number of contexts and not simply know the grammatical structures at the
point of utterance.

The Communicative Grammar Approach calls for a certain balance between pre-
communicative and communicative activities: the former trains the learner for direct conversation
with the language rules and the second helps him to use the constructs in practical conversation.
Not only should the students perform drills and pre-communicative activities in class, they would
also engage and talk with other speakers in the learning area, where they will have the ability to
use the patterns they are researching. If that is not feasible, an alternative would be to design the
courses in such a way that the students use the systems spontaneously and not deliberately, e.g. in
dialogs and role play.
