ARECIBO PUERTO RICO

BREAKDANCING CHAMPION
1980 - 1989

My name is ZULU KING IZQ i am 51 years of age. I was Born and Raised in Brooklyn New
York.
I started Dancing at the age of 8 in Brooklyn New York {1978}.
In 1980 my Family Moved to Arecibo Puerto Rico,I was only 12 years old at the time. My Style
of Dance was Breakdancing and pop locking. When we moved to Puerto Rico it was a brand
new world for us. No one knew or even heard of Breakdancing at the time. As i remember i was
in the main part of town called el pueblo, I remember asking my Mother for a pair of white
gloves they sold from out of one of the many shops there. My Mother smiled at me and bought
me a pair of gloves i so much wanted. As i remember vividly I walked over to the huge stage in
the plaza that stood in the middle of the town. I started popping with no music with the white
gloves on. And to my surprise I was surrounded by A Lot of young students and curious Grown
ups who have never seen this kind of Dance or Movements before.
I continued to come back as much as I could to display my dancing styles and techniques.
That summer of 1980 i stood in front of the towns High school called the high vieja, with my
white gloves on and started dancing in front of the entire school. The response was
overwhelming and crazy, as everyone surrounded me in a circle as I hit the floor with my
Breaking Moves. From 1980 through 1989 I was able to dominate The Breakdance and Hip Hop
scenes Throughout the Island. Winning all Battles at local festivals and shows.

The reason for this Document is to share My Breakdancing Experience with the World.
Throughout the years The Hip hop History from Arecibo Puerto Rico has been watered down
and a lot of pieces of the puzzle missing. I have been blessed to have been part of History in the
making of the early 80,s. For Breakdancing. There was no cameras or phones at this point in
time, but my True Experience and Memories will last me and those who experience it for a
lifetime. I am a true pioneer of Breakdancing who continues to Teach the knowledge of the 5
Elements of Hip Hop through the Universal Zulu Nation throughout the World.
