Instructions: Submit the first 36 questions, that is, questions 1-36. Students should show
the solutions in A4 paper size. The solutions MUST be in the order as listed, that is, Q1, Q2,
Q3,...,Q36. Plan ahead, do exercises every week, do NOT wait until the last minute!

1. A paper cup has the shape of a cone with height 10 cm and radius 3 cm (at the top). If
water is poured into the cup at a rate of 2 cm3 /s, how fast is the water level rising when the
water is 5 cm deep?

2. A boat is pulled into a dock by a rope attached to the bow of the boat and passing through
a pulley on the dock that is 1 m higher than the bow of the boat. If the rope is pulled in at a
rate of 1 m/s, how fast is the boat approaching the dock when it is 8 m from the dock?

3. An earth satellite moves in a path that can be described by

is given approximately by the formula

Find the temperature at which water has its maximum density.

6. Suppose that the demand equation for a monopolist is p = 100 − 0.01x and the cost function
is C(x) = 50x + 10, 000.

(c) Find the intervals of concavity and the inflection points.
(d) Sketch the graph of f (x).

10. A model used for the yield of an agricultural crop as a function of the nitrogen level in the
soil (measured in appropriate units) is

11. A box has a square base of side x and height y.


(a) Find the dimensions x, y for which the volume is 12 and the surface area is as small as
possible.

Hint: (a) The volume V = x2 y = 12. Minimize the surface area A = 2x2 + 4xy.

12. (a) Given f (x) = x (x2 − 1) (x2 − 3), prove that the equation f 0 (x) = 0 has four distinct
real roots.
Hint: Use the Rolle’s Theorem.
(b) Use the Mean Value Theorem to prove the inequality |sin a − sin b| 6 |a − b| for all a and b.
(c) Show that x > sin x, ∀x > 0.
Hint: Let f (x) = x − sin x. Can use MVT for f (x) and f (0), x > 0. [Or, alternatively, can
show that f 0 (x) > 0 and f (0) = 0.]

(see the below figure). Find the dimensions of the rectangular field to minimize the cost of the
fence?

17. Cowboy Clint wants to build a dirt road from his ranch to the highway so that he can
drive to the city in the shortest amount of time. The perpendicular distance from the ranch to
the highway is 4 miles, and the city is located 9 miles down the highway. Where should Clint
join the dirt road to the highway if the speed limit is 20 mph on the dirt road and 55 mph on
the highway?

Hint: Minimize the total number of hours for the trip, which is

21. A car is traveling at 100 km/h when the driver sees an accident 80 m ahead and slams on
the brakes. What constant deceleration is required to stop the car in time to avoid a pileup?
Hint: Let a(t) = −c km/h2 be the constant acceleration (c > 0). One can solve for the system
of equations v(t) = 0 and s(t) = 80 × 10−3 km, where v(t) and s(t) can be found from a(t),
v(0) = 100 km/h. Answer: a(t) = −62500 km/h2 or −4.82 m/s2 .
