1. A tank contains 10 liters of pure water. Salt water containing 20gm. of salt per liter is
pumped into the tank at 2 liters per minute.
(a) Express the salt concentration C(t) after t in (gm/l).
(b) What is long term concentration of salt, (i.e. limn→∞ C(t))?
2. The Candy Factory sells candy by kilograms, charging Rs. 1.50/kg for quantities up to and
including 20 kgs. Above 20 kgs, the Candy Factory charges Rs. 1.25/kg for the entire
quantity, plus a quantity surcharge k. If x represents the number of kilograms, then the
price function is
1.50x, for x ≤ 20,
P (x) =
1.25x + k, for x > 20.
(a) Find k such that the price function P is continuous at x = 20.
(b) Explain why it is preferable to have continuity at x = 20.
3. An apartment complex has 250 apartments to rent. If they rent x apartments, then their
monthly profit, in rupees, is given by

P (x) = −8x2 + 3200x − 80000

How many apartments should they rent in order to maximize their profit?
4. A company that manufactures sport supplements calculates that its costs and revenue can
be modeled by the equations

1 2
C(x) = 125000 + 0.75x and R(x) = 250x − x
10
wherex is the number of units of sport supplements produced in 1 week. If production in
one particular week is 1000 units and is increasing at a rate of 150 units per week, then find:
(a) the rate at which the cost is changing;

1
(b) the rate at which revenue is changing;
(c) the rate at which profit is changing.
5. An airforce plane is ascending vertically at the rate of 100 km/hr. If the radius of the earth
is r km, how fast is the area of the earth , visible from the plane, increasing at 3 minutes
after it started ascending ? Given that the visible area A at height h is given by
h
A = 2πr2 .
r+h
6. Of all rectangles of area 100 sq. units, which has the smallest perimeter?
