Introduction/ Warm Up
 Have students run 2 laps around the whole gym
the second they enter the gym as a quick warm
up.
 Have students meet near the middle of the gym
after running to listen to next instructions.
 Explain to students that we will be doing
badminton for the next few weeks in gym class.
 Provide students with a demonstration on how to
hold the racquet. Have students watch how to grip
the racquet and show where the thumb and fingers
10 mins hold the handle. The heel of the hand should be at
the flat end of the handle. Explain how they only
use one hand to hold the racquet. Show students
how you need to stand sideways when using the
racquet. Show students how their feet need to be
shoulder width apart, with their knees slightly
bent.
 Have students take a racquet and mimic your
demonstration as a quick practice before bringing
out the birdies. Walk around to see if students are
holding the racquet correctly. Make sure students
are not holding it like a fist.
Main Activity
 Students will practice hitting the birdy, also
called a “shuttle”. Explain this term to
students.
 Explain how it is a forehand hit.
 Provide a demonstration of a shuttle and hit the
birdy lightly. Do this away from the net and
bring the net in later.
12 mins  Put students into partners and have them
space out from other partners. Have one
partner throw the birdy, while the other
practices hitting it. Make sure students are
practicing hitting it lightly. After doing this,
they can start hitting it harder. After a while,
have students switch.
 Students are just practicing hitting the birdy
and are not yet passing it between each other.

Closing Activity/ Cool-down

it with their racquet, passing it to their
partner.
