THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction: (insert)
In the present age, people are ignorant and unaware of the
chemical substances contained in hydrate drinks which can cause
adverse health effects as a consequence of prolonged exposure in
it specially those people who exert more energy through physical
activities. Mainly, individuals such as athletes, people at higher
altitudes, and older adults are at higher risk of dehydration.
Dehydration is a condition of the body that can occur when too
much body fluids exceeds the amount taken in through drinking.
In the other hand, the severity of dehydration varies on different
lifestyle factors (diets, physical activities, behavior). (citation)
Cucumbers are related to melons (watermelon, cantaloupe
and honeydew) considered as relatively low-calorie food and
comprises about 95% water. They contain high levels of lignans,
vitamin K, cucurbitacins and their derivatives (triterpenoids),
flavonoids (apigenin, luteolin, quercetin, and kaempferol),
antioxidants such as beta carotene and vitamin C, and B vitamins,
among other trace elements and minerals. (citation)
Cucumbers could be great supplements to drinking water or
even serve as an alternative to consuming sports drinks because
of its high level of water content and the added bonus of
naturally-occurring nutrients and trace minerals. Consuming
watery foods is the best way of replenishing the body and
extinguish thirst but on the contrary most of the people
consistently believes that drinking water instead would be enough
to hydrate our body. (citation)
Cucumbers have their phytonutrient content; the recent
studies (state the studies) have identified the presence of
several key lignans in cucumbers that had been more prominently
associated with cruciferous vegetables like broccoli of allium
vegetables like onions and garlic. (citation)

Cucumber lignans include lariciresinol, pinoresinol, and


secoisolariciresinol. Similarly, cucumbers are now known to
contain phytonutrients that are members of the terpenoid family
including cucurbitacins A, B, C, D, and E. All of the phytonutrients
have the potential to lower risk of oxidative stress and chronic
inflammation. Decreased risk in these areas is also associated
with decreased risk of multiple chronic diseases, and especially
risk of certain cardiovascular diseases and certain cancers.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Generally, this study aims to determine the nutritional


properties of cucumber and its health benefits. Specifically, it
aims to comply the same treatment as for other synthetic
supplements and hydrate drink.
Guide questions:
 In terms of mass, how many grams of cucumber powder
will be needed for:
a) 50 ml of water
b) 75 ml of water
c) 100 ml of water
 Is there any difference between the usage of natural
cucumber powder and commercial drinks in terms of
nutrition content?
 Is the natural hydrated cucumber drink more efficient to
drink than synthetic supplements?

HYPOTHESES
1. There is no significant difference in using synthetic powdered
drink and the natural cucumber powdered drink in terms of
nutritional content.
2. There is no significant difference in using natural powdered
drink and pure water in terms of hydrating the body.
3. There is a significant difference between the cucumber drink
and the synthetic hydrate drink.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The cucumber powder hydrate drink can make human lives


healthier and away from synthetic materials included in different
food supplements nowadays. This product can prevent various
diseases that might affect our health through the nutritional
properties in which cucumbers acquire. In a game, instead of
drinking sports or electrolyte drinks the cucumber hydrate drink is
way better than it to avoid palpitation. It also serves as a
multivitamin drink that is obtainable for all ages especially for
people who have micronutrient deficiency. (citation)
The study aims to accomplish and realize the following purpose:
Public
Using a natural cucumber supplement will allow the area to attain
an alternative rather than using synthetic one. The supplement
will also be used as hydrate drink for it to be consumed for the
people who has micronutrient deficiency. Moreover, it will realize
the natural properties of the cucumber that helps our system fight
over hundred major diseases and remove toxins throughout our
body.
Industry
This study will further the knowledge pertaining in the benefits of
cucumber aside from manufacturing beauty products. The study
provides an overview on the effects of the supplements. In
additional, it will serve as an alternative in the usage of synthetic
materials which could lead to various diseases in humans. This
study hopes to give off details on how it can be more efficient
than the commercial one and also it will promote the natural way
of drinking hydrate drinks.
Future Research
This study may serve as a reference for future studies related to
the nutritional properties of cucumber as alternative for synthetic
power drinks. It may also provide a framework for the future
researchers who would like to innovate this study or to perform a
similar study on a different way to make cucumber powder drink
as hydrate drink.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

• Cucumber - is a widely cultivated plant in the gourd family,


Cucurbitaceae. It is the main subject in the study wherein
the researcher will use it as the content of the supplement.
• Phytonutrients - a substance found in certain plants which
is believed to be beneficial to human health and help
prevent various diseases. It is the content of the cucumber.
• Derivative - is a compound that is derived from a similar
compound by a chemical reaction.
• Lignans - used to improve digestive health, lower blood
pressure and bad cholesterol, reduce the risk of cancer and
may benefit people with diabetes.
• Food supplements - a manufactured product intended to
supplement the diet when taken by mouth as a pill, capsule,
tablet, or liquid.
• Terpenoids - are used for their aromatic qualities and play
a role in traditional herbal remedies.
•  Hydrate - refers to a chemical compound that includes
water molecules.
• Dehydration - a harmful reduction in the amount of water
in the body.
• Cucurbitacins - are tetracyclic terpenes with steroidal
structures that are isolated from plants of the family.
•  Triterpenoids – used for cancer prevention and treatment.
• Flavonoids - are a group of plant metabolites thought to
provide health benefits through cell signaling pathways and
antioxidant effects. 

SCOPES AND LIMITATIONS


The study mainly focuses on the nutritional properties of
cucumbers and its benefits in hydrating the body after physical
activities. The data collection will be conducted in selected
people within Damariñas City who permitted the
researchers to test the capabilities and limitations of
natural cucumber powdered drink (ethics committee
approval is needed). Other people in other places will not be
included in the scope of the study. The respondents would
undergo laboratory test through their sweat secreted after some
physical doings in order for the researchers to recognize its effect
in the human body. Moreover, the cucumber hydrate drink has a
limitation on the diseases it will cure by means of continuous
usage because it primarily treats dehydration for people in higher
risk of that condition. It specifically serves as a hydrate drink and
multivitamins that can replace costly synthetic supplement which
can harm our body through the chemical ingredients blended in
the hydrate drinks.
