Can Information Technology Help Transform India?

Export target for IT products and services of $50 billion a year, making India the number one IT
design centre, and the number one provider of IT products.The software industry in India gained
recognition in the early eighties, as companies took up export of trained software manpower,
especially to USA.One of the most significant initiatives of DoT has been in bringing the STD-
PCO to every corner of the country, and to a lesser extent, its group PBX policy.The major
Indian initiative in R&D in the telecom sector has been, of course, C-DoT. This initiative
delivered not just a product (C-DoT exchanges serve about a third of the 16 million lines in use
in India today).Internet to every school and setup SMART schools and institutes in the area of
Telecommunications and Computer Science.

Role of information technology in banking industry

Technology has opened up new markets, new products, new services and efficient delivery
channels for the banking industry.Net Banking, Credit Card Online ,Mobile Banking, e-Monies
Electronic Fund Transfer, Online Payment of Excise & Service Tax, Shopping,Railway Ticket
Booking through SMS,ATM,Internet Banking,Mobile Banking.

Role of information technology in agriculture

Many organizations and Institutes are utilizing the information technology to provide solutions to
the problems faced by the agriculture sector in a cost effective manner with proper business
models.Agriculture is not exception to it. If the relevant and right information in right time is
provided it can help agriculture a lot. It helps to take timely action, prepare strategies for next
season or year, speculate the market changes, and avoid unfavorable circumstances.So the
development of agriculture may depend on how fast and relevant information is provided to the
end users

IT spending will reach $25 billion in 2006, up from $20.3 billion in 2005, and business spending
on computer hardware, software, and communications products will grow at a rate of 20.8% over
the next four years.India's prospects look so enticing to Microsoft that the company plans to
invest $1.7 billion in India over the next four years, with half of the investment being pumped
into the expansion of Microsoft’s research and development centers.

Information Technology: Current Events in India

The Information Technology sector in India is mostly taken up by software and and services like,
system integration, application development and maintenance , consulting, software testing, and
internet services. Companies like Wal-Mart, Intel, Cisco, Oracle and Dell are continuing to look
to India’s Information Technology organizations to provide technology services.India’s largest
exporter of computer software, Tata Consultancy Services, Ltd. reports a 29% increase in second
quarter 2009 profits.In other developments, India's Polaris Software Lab Ltd. has agreed to
purchase Laser Soft Infosystems Ltd. Laser Soft provides information technology services in the
banking industry. The purchase, for approximately 520 million rupees.

Information Technology Sector structure/Market size

According to DIT, the Indian software and services exports is expected to reach US$ 49.7 billion in 2009-
10 as compared to US$ 47.1 billion in 2008-09.The data centre services market in the country is forecast
to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 22.7 per cent between 2009 and 2011, to touch
close to US$ 2.2 billion by the end of 2011,As per a report by the Internet and Mobile Association of
India (IAMAI) and market research firm IMRB, the total number of Internet users in India reached 71
million in 2009.Wipro Ltd, an IT services company, has entered into a strategic collaboration with
Hitachi Data Systems, to offer co-branded products and services on Hitachi Technology in India.Between
April 2000 and March 2010, the computer software and hardware sector received cumulative foreign
direct investment (FDI) of US$ 9,872.49 million.

IT sector has multiplier effect on Indian economy: CRISILnews

The IT and ITeS services sector has a multiplier effect on the Indian economy with every input
of a rupee resulting in a 100 per cent return. Every rupee spent by the IT-ITeS sector translates
into a total output of 2 rupees in the economy. Analysing the expenditure on operating expenses,
capital expenditure and consumption spending by professionals in the sector, it notes that for
every job created in the sector, four are created in the rest of the economy.
