Film Analysis
One of the highlights of the movie was when Ms. Estrell Subido cross paths again
with her intelligent and bright student, Bernard, in the 30 th year anniversary of
their high school class. This scene is significant because this is where Estrell
realized that secular philosophy she taught her students, wherein she said that they
should believe in themselves alone did not have a good effect on his star student.
Her lessons have put Bernard on the wrong path and Estrell is blaming herself for
it.
Another highlight of this movie was when one of Bernard’s classmates, played by
Vaness Del Moral, was contemplating whether it was her fault if she voted for a
bad candidate. This scene is significant because this is where we can see that
people just vote for the sake of voting and they do not even think of the
consequences if they vote for an incompetent candidate. Voting may be a
harmless act, but it compels great liability.
2. What present-day realities (societal, church, etc.) are depicted in the film?
A lot of present-day issues were presented in the film such as negligent parents,
college fraternities, armed insurgency, dirty and deadly politics, corrupt
government officials, and religious renewal. However, the film focused mostly on
the darker side of politics, where politicians are eaten by all the money and power
that they have. It is also shown in the movie how politics can be dirty and
manipulative. Senator Mojica climbed his way through politics by stealing
people’s money, killing his opponents and those who disagree with him. These
are all relevant and recurring issues in our society today and sometimes we are
just blind enough to see it or ignorant enough to admit it.
3. What can you contribute to the change you want to see in your family, community,
school, country, and church?
