“Elevator Experiment”

In doing such experiment, I thought of a good place to do it wherein people would

usually go in and out either by themselves or with company. So I thought of doing it in school
and why not do it in “The Elevator of the College Library”, wherein the “participants” were
mainly students from the senior high school area. I did the experiment with my classmate “Lilac”
as can be seen in the photos, when we got to the building we had to wait for a bit for the elevator
to come down unluckily it was just the two of us there waiting but when the elevator opened we
saw a pack of students inside and from the outside you can hear the noise their making as they
walk out although we did not get the chance to properly observe them.

At that, we went inside did not push a number but waited until someone from the other
floors selected the triangular shaped symbol up and down from the outside then pushed the floor
number. It started when the elevator suddenly went up to the fourth floor and two people came
inside. I set a timer for 5 minutes then observed at first I thought that they were with each other
until one of them pushed the ground floor button. All throughout they were both quite without a
nod and so when we went down they immediately walked out and walked in different paths. The
second and third encounter were somewhat the same experience because with these two
encounters we know some of the “participants” as they were in the same organization as us. That
made us somewhat interact with them for a bit although I realized that after the bit interaction
with them there was still awkward silence until they went out. After the third encounter, the
timer stopped but I told “Lilac” we haven’t taken a picture so we quickly took a picture when
suddenly the elevator went up so we decided why not do yet another observation. This time it
was diverse and we are thankful because we got to observe a big crowd from different groups, it
was like when we first got to the elevator the very first time only this time around we get to
observe them. As they walked inside you can hear mumbles and voices talking at the same time
from different parts of the elevator, speaking as if no ones there but them. All of them knew each
other some of them were even teasing each other and finally for the nth time of going back and
fourth “ground floor” we finally got out with the others.

To conclude, I think that in the small space of a elevator a lot can be observe from the
way people interact, move and even act when they are surrounded by other people. From what I
observe is that when you are alone or with someone you tend to be quite or maybe mumble a bit
but not too loud. It depends though but when you are part of a large crowd or you are with a
number of friends people tend to be overpowering and as I said act as if no ones there but them.
