1. The weight characteristic (in lb) of a commercial aircraft are :
a. Maximum Structural Take Off Weight (MSTOW) = 602.500
b. Operating Empty Weight (OEW) = 283.975
c. Maximum Structural Payload = 116.025
d. Structural Payload = 110.000
e. Fuel Capacity = 258.721
f. Maximum Landing Fuel = 25.500
It assumed that the regulations governing the use of aircraft require 2 hours reserve in route
service. The aircraft has an average route speed of 886 km/hours and an average fuel burn of
53,5 lb/km. Plot the payload versus range diagram.
Solution : find served range that aircraft carries the maximum payload (Pa – ar )
Note : MSTOW = OEW + Max.Payload + Allow.Fuel
602.500 = 283.975 + 116.025 + Allow.Fuel
Allow.Fuel = 202.500 lb
Allow.Fuel = Reserve Fuel + Route Fuel
Reserve F. = reserve time*avr.route speed*avr.fuel burn
= 2*886*53,5
= 94.802 lb
Route Fuel = 202.500 - 94.802
= 107.698 lb
Route at Pa = 107.698 / 53,5
= 2013 mi
For controlling Weight that the landing weight at destination cant exceed the MSLW
The actual landing weight for maximum payload (Pa) is :
Landing Weight = MSTOW – route fuel
= 602.500 – 107.698
= 499.802 lb
The Point of Pa-ar in plotted Payload vs. Range diagram is (116.025 lb ; 2013 mi )
Find served range that aircraft carries the maximum fuel ( Pb – br ).
Aircraft fuel capacity at 258.721 lb. Therefore, the maximum route fuel is computed from the
weight of fuel capacity subtracted the reserve fuel.
Max.route fuel = 258.721 - 94.802 = 163.919 lb
Range at Max. Fuel = 163.919 / 53,5 = 3063,9 km
Thus, if the aircraft flies in max. route length of 3063,9 mi, the payload must be restricted by
subtracting the OEW and Weight of fuel capacity from MSTOW.
MSTOW = OEW + Allow. Payload + Max.Fuel
602.500 = 283.975 + Allow.Payload + 258.721
Allow.Payload = 59.804 lb
The Point of Pb-br in plotted Payload vs. Range diagram is ( 59.804 lb ; 3063,9 mi )
Find Served range that aircraft flies without any payload and carries the maximum fuel (Po – cr :
ferry range).
Ferry Range = Max. Fuel Capacity / Fuel Burn
= 258.721 / 53.5 = 4835,9 mi
The Point of Po-cr in plotted Payload vs. Range diagram is ( 0 lb ; 4835,9 )
