PK TOUCHES - Derren style notes

Well if you know the secret of PK Touches and you’re a close-up kind of guy, then you were
probably disappointed. It’s not one of them principles that can easily be adjusted for your
setting. However, Derren managed it, as I’m sure you have already witnessed.

Here’s a possible method of doing it:

Specs all on ONE side; i.e. the left or the right

Right, tell the “victim” to close their eyes. Now here’s what going to happen. Once there
eyes are closed you cannot carry out the taps too soon, as then the gap will be far too long and
suspicion will be aroused, not only due to the pause, but also due to the sudden arm
movement. Now say to the rest of the specs a line that will keep their attention for literally a
second. I use, “Now watch this.” My left hand is raised at this point and moves out towards
the audience. As soon as it moves out to the audience, 1 secret tap happens. This is done
using the right arm to extend. The right hand is at an angle. If you look at your hand right
now, your right hand (make sure it is in resting position, as if you were holding the mouse,
which you probably are), tilt it right slightly towards the mouse mat. Make sure it is at an
angle so the joint on the little finger (not the knuckle, the joint, half way down the finger) is
barely in view. Notice that if the little finger is extended, the movement of the extension
cannot be noticed. If it can then adjust the angle so it can’t. That’s the angle to have the hand
at when moving the arm forward. When crossing the victims’ hand, extend the little finger. 1
tap. It should be a fluid movement, no pause. In fact two taps can be done very quickly. But
I do the following…

Now the second tap. This is when you reach the wrist. It’s exactly the same method. Extend
the little finger. Once you have completed the “moves”, shall we say, you move the hand
towards the victims face. I wave my hand around their eyes as if to be checking to see
whether the spectator has really closed them or not. The rest is self-explanatory.

A Massive Note: MAKE SURE THE HAND MOVEMENT IS FLUENT! Another point, the
little finger can reach some distance, so don’t feel that you have to have your hand grazing
against their arm, and then it suddenly moves upwards towards the face. This action can do
nothing but cause suspicion! Another point, try and have the audience looking down on the
victim’s hand. Not directly down, but at a slight angle. If they’re side-on the pinkie touch
will be visible.

Last aspect that needs polishing: the time between the victim closing their eyes and the
misdirection line (Now watch this) should not be immediate. It should be at least a few
seconds. Take some deep breathing, not only to calm you, and to build tension, but also to
allow the victim to lose time track.

Believe me, try and watch Derren do this on his Mind Control special if you can. It will help
greatly. Also notice the woman being touched (not sure whether it’s the first or the second, as
he does it to two people; he must have some balls!) mentions a touch not only on her hand,
but also slightly up her arm. Re-wind and see how she felt it there. It’s not entirely clear due
to the angles of the camera, but you can benefit from watching the timing he uses.
