PM Document: Background
Theme: Rural Community Development Project
• Kampung Damai is a village situated in a remote part of Sarawak, near Mount
Murud. The community has a population of 300, and does not have easy access
to large towns, schools and utilities such as electricity and tap water.

• The nearest school is in Long Luping, where the children would need to trek for 5
hours on pebbled, unpaved road by foot. As such, the children go on boarding
during term time, and only get to go home during the holidays.

• The main source of livelihood is by fishing from the nearby Trusan River, paddy
planting, and hunting wild, small animals in the forests. The village is surrounded
by some breathtaking scenery of mountains and caves, and is also close to a rich
supply of woods.

• Villagers in search of a “better” life would have to go to the “faraway” land -

Lawas, the district capital located in the north, which is 3 days’ walking away.

3
Background (cont’d)
• The head of village, Mr. Lincoln, is frustrated with the constant
poverty that has stricken the village, and is desperately in need of
external assistance to improve the accessibility of the village, and
the welfare of the villagers, the longhouse dwellers with a rich and
well-preserved cultural heritage.

• Mr. Lincoln’s ultimate aim is for the village to become self-

sustainable by year 2016, rather than relying on continuous external
aid.

4
Your Project

whether in the form of products, training, funding or technical
knowhow, with the eventual purpose of providing independence
and self-sustainability.
