This was quite a long
journey for him, as it started
when he brought blues
inspired music into a more
mainstream limelight. But
let’s take a closer look into
his life.

Eric Patrick Clapton was

born on the 30th March
1945 in Surrey, England. His
mother, Patricia Clapton
was only 16 years old at the
time of his birth and as she
was too young to raise a
child on her own, she left
Eric with her mother and
step father Rose and Jack
Clapp. They never legally

Clapton grew up under the

impression that his
grandparents were his
biological parents and that
his mother was his sister. He
found out the truth about
this when he was nine.
Clapton grew up in a
musical household. His
grandmother was a skilled
pianist and his Mother and
uncle both enjoyed listening
to big band music. By 1958,
rock and roll had become
popular worldwide and for
his 13th birthday, Eric asked
for a guitar. He received a
German-made Hoyer which
was difficult for him to play
as it had steel strings so he
put it aside until he picked it
up again when he was 15
and began to learn to play
again. When he was 16, Eric
began studying at the
Kingston college of art. He
was expelled at the end of
one year as he had not
submitted enough work.
Why? Because guitar
playing and listening to the
blues became his priority.
