Summary

My topic for the research paper is sexual assault in the workplace. I have selected this topic

because growing up, my family has always been involved with an organization called R.A.D., or

Rape Aggression Defense, Systems. This organization was founded by my grandfather, and my

grandmother is the director of the Women’s Program. My mother is the conference coordinator

and an instructor for R.A.D. I have volunteered at the annual conference for the past six years,

and I did my internship at the headquarters. Growing up around an organization like this has left

an impact on me, and issues involving sexual assault are important to me.

The questions I will use to guide my research are:

● What are the laws regarding sexual assault in the workplace, and how have they changed

over time?

● What work fields do women experience this problem the most in?

● What percentage of men are sexually assaulted at work?

● What measures have been taken to prevent assault at places of work?

For my project, I am going to become a certified R.A.D. Instructor (the arrangements are already

in place for me to take the certification class for free, and become an instructor in February). In

March I’m going to teach a shortened version of the R.A.D. class, as the classes are usually nine

to twelve hours. I am going to contact the Great Neck Rec Center, and use one of the private

rooms there to conduct the class. My consultant for the project will be Mr. Hodges. I will

explain the importance of knowing these techniques, and when to use them. An integral part of

this is knowing your rights when using self defense, and there will be stress put on the fact that

using force is not always acceptable in certain situations. Emphasis will be placed on the
education of laws in place and what a person’s rights are, rather than exclusively teaching

techniques. My goal for this class is to teach young adults who are either entering the workforce

now, or have recently entered, what some of the common issues are and how to avoid those

situations. I also want to teach them more information about what a person’s rights are when it

comes to self defense. At the end of the class, I will have all of the participants take a survey

about their experience in the workplace, and what they thought of the class.

B. New Skills, Enhanced Skills, Areas of Growth

New Skills- Learning new self defense techniques, learning how to teach not only the techniques

but information to a group of people, organizing a class on my own

Enhanced Skills- Presenting in front of a group of people, communicating with businesses about

what I would like to achieve

Areas of Growth- Meeting deadlines, advocating for myself, being confident in front of a group

C. Marketing Plan/Audience

My target audience for my project is young adults/high school students. This is around the time

where teenagers or young adults are beginning to find jobs, or will be getting jobs soon. The self

defense class will be important to them because it isn’t just teaching them how to use force

against someone, it is teaching them about what their rights are and how to avoid these situations

where they may need to defend themselves. Taking classes such as this one can make a person

feel safer, and much more confident. I plan to market this class by putting up flyers around the

school, and using social media to spread information about the class, and posting my phone

number so people can contact me to sign up. Keeping the marketing around the school and on
my social media will allow for my target demographic (high school students) to hear about the

class.

D. Project Steps

Preliminary Steps Secure a room at the rec 9 hours

center, take the certification
class, decide which portions
of the class are necessary for
my presentation.

Midway Steps Practice presentation, confirm 4 hours

that the room at the rec center
will be used, begin gathering
materials and advertising,
write the survey.

Later Steps Practice final presentation 5 hours

format, insure all materials
needed are gathered, confirm
with the students who have
signed up for the class, set up
the room used for the class at
least an hour before the class
starts.

Follow Up Clean up after the class, write 3 hours

thank yous to everyone who
assisted of offered services
for the class, analyze survey
results.

Total 21 hours

E. Project Documentation

● Pictures from the certification class I will take

● Copy of proof that I receive that I am a certified instructor

● Copies of emails that I send and receive

● Pictures from the day of the project, and videos

● Receipts for any materials I need

● Copy of outline for project

● Copy of a blank survey

● Data analysis from the results of the survey

F. Project Justification

This project will be beneficial because it will be teaching a group of people who are

newly entering the workforce how to realistically defend themselves, or what steps to

take to avoid encountering a situation. I have never done any research on sexualt assault

specifically in the workplace, and I have never taught a self defense class before. It will

be a challenge for me because I have never had to instruct a large group of people, and I

will have to portray information in a way that will be effective and useful for those who

attend. The topic of sexual assault has been something that I have been passionate about

for years, but I have never done specific research, and I am interested to learn more.

G. Project/Paper Connection

My paper is specifically about sexual assault in the workplace, and what steps have been

taken by legislators to help lessen these issues. Young adults, especially high schoolers,

are now entering the workforce and being faced with these issues for the first time. It is

important that adults entering the workforce are aware of the problem, know how to

avoid it, and, if necessary, can defend themselves. The survey that participants take after
attending the class will further add to my research, and help to reach a conclusion about

how informed are employees of their rights in the workplace.

H. Academic Honesty

I understand that any academic dishonesty by me on any part of the project/paper will result in failure of

the Senior Project and forfeiture of the Legal Studies Seal on my High School diploma.
