Reconsidering the Existential: Existence and Communication

August 16­18, 2017

The SKC Annual Conference 2017 is the third in a series of conferences devoted to Kierkegaard’s
existential thinking. While the conference in 2015 opened with the title “Reconsidering Kierkegaard’s
Existential Approach,” the 2016 conference moved one step further by focusing on the relation between
the aesthetical, the ethical, and the religious. This conference concludes the reconsideration of
Kierkegaard’s existential thinking with a systematic reexamination of Kierkegaard’s existential thought
reflected in the question of communication in philosophy, theology, literature, and psychology.

Communication plays a prominent role in Kierkegaard’s authorship and, accordingly, the topic of
communication has been prevalent in Kierkegaard studies for more than a century. In order to cast new
light on this time­hallowed topic, the thematic focus of the conference is more specifically on the
relationship between existence and communication. Articulating the question of communication in terms of
the concept of existence allows for a focused investigation of Johannes Climacus’ claim in the Postscript:
“To exist is an art.” This enigmatic claim reappears in Kierkegaard’s multifarious texts so often that it
seems problematic to separate playful rhetoric from earnest existential deliberations.

The SKC Annual Conference 2017 therefore encourages papers that deal with the intersection between the
communicative aspect of Kierkegaard’s texts and the systematic investigation of existence at work in
those texts. Among possible issues to be explored are the following: The question of indirect
communication or impartment—what does this mean and how is it related to the concept of existence? 
What is the existential significance of Kierkegaard’s concept of irony and of his use of ironic
communication? How are we to understand the relation between the various forms of communication at
play in the pseudonymous works and the edifying discourses? Is it possible to bring Kierkegaard into
systematic dialogue with other existential thinkers—without losing a specific aspect of his thought, that is,
his constant ridicule of such systematic attempts? Who and where is the implicit reader in Kierkegaard's
texts.

Call for Papers

The SKC is delighted to invite proposals for papers to be presented at the SKC Annual Conference 2017.
The conference language is English, and proposals must be max. 250 words. Submissions should be sent
to Bjarne Still Laurberg at sek@sk.ku.dk.

Deadline for submission: March 1, 2017.

The conference venue will be at the Faculty of Theology, University of Copenhagen, located at UCPH South
Campus, Karen Blixens Plads 16, DK­2300 Copenhagen.
