Hard disc of 10GB or higher capacity
Colour moniter
Key board
Mouse
Printer, Plotter etc.
SOFTWARE CONFIGURATION:
Windows 2000, XP Home (or) Professional, or Windows Vista, or Windows-7 (or) windows-8.
Application software: AUTOCAD Rel. 2010.
4. How do you start AutoCAD in windows?
a) By double clicking on the AutoCAD icon in the Windows icon.
b) By clicking as follows: Start menu → Programs → Autodesk →
AutoCAD 2010

5. State the important modes to activate a command in AutoCAD 2010?

a)Ribbon, b) Toolbars, c) Application Tab, d) Key board (command Window) e) Menu
bar and f) Shortcut menu.
6. State the various modes to activate a line command in AutoCAD 2010?
a) Ribbon → Home tab → Draw panel → Line
b) Toolbar (in classic work space) → draw → Line
c) Command entry in command window → Line or L
7. What is the use of Command: prompt in AutoCAD?
Any AutoCAD command can be invoked at the Key board by typing the name of
command at the Command: prompt and then pressing Enter key.
8. What is the Use of Tool bar in AutoCAD?
Tool bar is used for selecting AutoCAD commands easily and conveniently. Each tool
bar contains a group of icons representing different AutoCAD command. Required

Objectives Page 8
AutoCAD command can be invoked by clicking on the corresponding item in the
respective pull down menu.
9. What is the use of POLYGON command?
POLYGON command is used to draw a polygon (closed polyline object) having specified
number of sides. The Maximum number of sides a polygon can have in AutoCAD 2010
is 1024.
10. What is the use of TRIM command?
TRIM command is used to remove the unwanted portions of an object which extend
beyond a specified boundary.
11. What is the use of ROTATE command?
Rotate command is used to rotate the object to a new orientation about a selected base
point.
12. Where the aligned dimensions used?
It is used to align dimension line along an inclined line.
13. What is the use of GRID and SNAP?
Grid helps in locating points as on a graph paper. Snap helps to select a grid point (if it
is set ‘ON’ position), even if we click slightly away from it.
14. What is the utility of ORTHO command? How is it activated and deactivated?
In ‘Ortho’ mode all lines are drawn only along the X and Y directions. It can be activate
by the following methods.
a. On the status bar, by clicking the ‘ORTHO’ button.
b. On the command line, by typing as ‘ORTHO’ and pressing the enter key, then it
can be activated to ON Position.
c. By pressing the F8 function key.
15. Explain the term ‘width factor’ and ‘oblique angle’ related to text.
Width factor: This option is used to increase or decrease the width of each character of
the text. A value of 0.5 decreases the width of each character to half and a value of 2
doubles it.
Oblique angle: A positive oblique angle writes the characters slanting forward such
ABC and negative value writes slanting backwards.
16. What does a block mean in AutoCAD?
A Block consists of one or more objects saved under a single name. Once saved, it can
be inserted at any place with different scales.
17. What is a block in AutoCAD? Explain Briefly
A block is a group of many entities (lines, arcs, circles, etc.) which is assigned a name
and an insertion base point. It is saved for future use. This saved block can be then
inserted wherever required in the current drawing using different scales. Using block
command we can make a library of all standard items which are used frequently. This
saves a lot of time for drawing objects repetitively.
18. Write about viewres command.
Arcs circles and ellipses are displayed as segments of short lines. The number of such
segments is controlled by the ‘viewres’ command. It value can be set up to 20000.
Higher the value, smoother is the curve. A lower value of ‘viewres’ saves regeneration
time. It also increases the performance of drawing. Its default value is 100.
19. What is hatching in AutoCAD? Where it is mostly used in mechanical engg. Drawing?

Objectives Page 9
Hatching means filling a boundary with a specified pattern at regular intervals. In
mechanical engineering drawings, the sectional views are hatched by inclined lines at
equal spacing. AutoCAD offers many predefined hatch patterns. ANSI-31 is a good
pattern for metals like M.S.,C.I. etc.,
20. What is the use of properties palette?
Using properties palette is one of the way to edit the properties of the objects such as
colors, line types, layer assignments and geometric values like radius of circle,
coordinates of the endpoints of a line etc.
21. Write about the DIVIDE and MEASURE commands.
DIVIDE: This command is used to divide an entity into a several equal length entities,
placing marks along the object at the dividing points.
MEASURE: This command is used to measure an entity and place marks at specified
intervals. It calculates appropriate intervals to divide the entity into the given number
of equal parts.
22. Write about the commands EXPLODE and PEDIT
EXPLODE: Breaks a compound object into its component objects for example, a
rectangle drawn by poly line is a single entity and explode breaks it as the simple four
lines.
PEDIT: This command edits polylines and three dimensional meshes. The following are
various options available in the commands are: Close, Join, width, Edit Vertex, fit, spline,
Dcurve, Ltypegen, Undo.
23. Write about OOPS command and COPY command.
OOPS: Object erased last time can be restored by this command.
COPY: Copy command is used to copy one or a group of entities to some new
location.
24. Write about the following commands: a) ARRAY b) OFFSET c) SRETCH d)
LENGTHEN e) MIRROR f) SCALE
a) ARRAY: ARRAY command is very useful when an object is to be copied to different
positions at regular intervals in RECTANGULAR or POLAR fashion.
b) OFFSET: OFFSET command creates a new object of the same shape as that of the
selected one at a specified distance or through a specified point.
c) STRETCH: STRETCH command is used to stretch or shrink a selected portion of the
drawing in only one specified direction. Lines arcs, traces, solids and polylines may be
stretched out but text cannot be stretched.
d) LENGTHEN: LENGTHEN command is used to modify the length of an object and
change the included angle of the arcs.
25. UCS Stands for what?
User co-ordinate system

26. What is the use of BREAK command?

Break command breaks the selected object between two points.
27. Write the general procedure to convert the 2D sketch in to 3D model
Create a 2D profile using standard 2D drawing commands.
Create regions using REGION command.
SUBTRACT unwanted region.
EXTRUDE or REVOLVE the resulting region.

Objectives Page 10
28. What is User Co-ordinate System?
The User Co-ordinate System (UCS) is a movable coordinate system for coordinate
entry, planes of projection and viewing.
29. What is the use of PLAN command?
This command is used to display the plan view of a specified user coordinate system.
30. State the use of RENDER command.
This command creates a photorealistic or realistically shaded image of a three dimensional
wire frame or solid model. RENDER produces an image using information from a scene,
the current selection set, or the current view.
