Experiment No. 2

Object:- To find the abrasive value of the coarse aggregates by using Los-Angles machine

Apparatus:-
1) Los Angles machine: It consists of a hollow steel cylinder closed at both the ends and having
inside diameter of 70cm and inside length of 50cm. It is mounted on a shaft, which rotates on a
horizontal axis. An opening in the cylinder is provided for introducing the test sample. A
removable steel shelf projecting radially 8.8cm into the cylinder and extending its full length is
mounted on one element of the interior surface of the cylinder.
2) Abrasive charge: It consists of iron spheres or steel spheres of approximately 4.8cm diameter,
each weighing between 390g and 445g.
3) IS sieve: 1.70mm sieve

Procedure:
Dried aggregates of specified weight are placed in the cylinder along with specified number of abrasive
balls as per gradation of aggregates. The machine is rotated for required number of revolutions (500 or
1000 as per gradation) at the rate of 30 to 33 rev. per second. After the desired no. of revolutions, the
material is taken out carefully. The portion of material coarser than 1.7mm size sieve is washed and
dried in an oven at 105o C to 110oC to constant weight and then is weighed correctly.

Observations and Calculations:

Let the weight of the original sample = W1g
Weight of the aggregates coarser than 1.70mm sieve = w2g
Loss of weight due to wear= (W1-W2)g
Los-Angles Abrasion value= [(W1-W2)/W1x100]
