Experiment No.5
Object:-
To determine the crushing value of the given road aggregates.
Apparatus:-
A 15.2cm inner diameter open ended steel cylinder with square base plate, plunger with a piston
diameter of 15cm, cylindrical measure having internal diameter of 11.5cm and height 18cm, steel
temping rod of diameter 1.6cm and length 45 to 60 cm with one rounded end, balance of capacity 5kg
with an accuracy of 1g.

Procedure:-
The aggregates which pass 12.5mm IS sieve and retain on 10mm IS sieve are selected for standard
test. The aggregates should be in surface dry condition before testing. The aggregates is dried by
heating at 100oC-110oC for not more than 4 hours and cooled to room temperature before testing.
The procedure is as under:
1. About 3.25 kg of material between 12.5mm and 10mm is taken. The aggregates are poured to
fill about 1/3rd depth of the measuring cylinder.
2. The material is compacted by giving 25 gentle blows with the rounded end of the temping rod.
Two more layers in similar manner are added such that the cylinder is full. The excess material
is removed with a straight edge. The quantity contained in the measuring cylinder is used to
prepare the test specimen.

3. The cylinder is emptied and the aggregates are weighed accurately to 1g. The whole of this
weighed quantity is transferred to the test mould by filling it in three layers in the same manner
as done before. The total depth of sample is about 10cm and the surface a little below the top
of the mould.
4. The surface is leveled off and the plunger is placed over it so that it rests horizontally on the
surface of the aggregates.
5. This assembly is placed on the pedestal of compression testing machine. The load is applied at
a uniform rate of 4 tones per minute until the total applied load is 40 tones. The load is then
released.
6. The aggregates are taken out of the cylinder and sieved through 2.36mm IS sieve. The fraction
passing through it is weighed to an accuracy of 0.1 g. This fraction is a measure of loss of
material due to crushing.
7. The observations in the Performa are noted down and the aggregate crushing value is
calculated. The mean of two observations rounded to nearest whole number is reported as
aggregate crushing value.

Observations:
SNo. Item Sample1 Sample2
1 Total weight of dry sample taken=W1g
2 Weight of portion passing 2.36mm sieve=W2g
3 Aggregate crushing value=(W2/W1)x100

Result:-
