1.0 INTRODUCTION

The report presented herein deals with Pile load Test for PROTOTYPE
PILE LOAD TEST AT TUNDLA DETOUR . The work of Pile load

Test was awarded to M/S ESSCON ENGINEERING SERVICES

PVT LTD. New Delhi by M/S ALSTOM SYSTEM INDIA PVT.
LTD.

1.1 SCOPE OF WORK

The scope of this document is to test and validate the estimated design
capacity of the cylindrical foundation ,The following are the scope of
work for conducting various types of load test including Lateral &
Vertical load test. According to is code of practice. IS: 2911(Part IV)

2.0 LOAD TEST ON PILE

2.1 VERTICAL LOAD TEST

Load Test shall be performed when concrete has reached its required
strength i.e. 28 days strength. The axial compressive loads test
should be done as per IS code 2911 part IV (latest revision).

2.1.1 EQUIPMENT & TOOLS

 Hydraulic jacks of suitable capacity with one pump.

 Pre-calibrated pressure gauge with a sensitivity of 20 kg/cm2.
 Dial Gauges - 4 nos.
 Four bearing plates.
 Glass plates of size 40 x 40 mm.
 Two datum Bar
 Bricks, cement, sand to support the jack.
 Tools for Excavation.
 Record Book

Page 2

2.1.2 TEST PROCEDURE:

 Piles to be load tested shall be so designated on the drawings or

specified/Selected by client in the field.
 Loading platform form by erecting kentledge, The load shall be
applied by placing sand beg . The CG of kentledge should be on the
axis of pile and the load applied by the jack should be co-axial with
the piles.
 Test load shall be applied to the piles by a hydraulic jack with a
control pump. Test load applied shall be such that a constant load is
maintained under increasing settlement.
 Loading Procedure should be Maintained Load method and the load
should be applied in an equal increment of 20 %. Of the safe load
and test should be perform upto 2.5 times of safe load or
displacement attains a value of 18mm or 2% of pile dia, which will
occur first.
 At each load increment, pile settlement shall be observed accurate to
0.02 mm at an interval of 2, 4, 8, 15, 30 minutes and thereafter at half
hourly intervals up to a time when the rate of settlement of the pile
top reduces to 0.1mm in half hour or 0.2mm in one hour, which will
occur first. The test load shall be maintained for 24 hours. Unloading
shall be carried out in same decrements at 30min interval and
rebound for each decrement shall be noted. The final rebound shall
be recorded 3 hours after the entire load is removed. the test results
were recorded and provided in table no-1.Altogether three vertical
load test on pile were conducted & results are also plotted in Fig-1.

2.2 LATERAL LOAD TEST

Load Test shall be performed when concrete has reached its required
strength i.e. 28 days strength. The lateral loads test should be done as
per IS2911 Part IV 2013 . The test may be carried out by introducing a
hydraulic jack with gauge between two piles or reaction may be
suitably obtained. The full load imposed by the jack shall be taken as
the lateral resistance of the pile. The loading shall be applied in
increments of about 20 percent of estimated safe load.

2.2.1 EQUIPMENT & TOOLS:

 Hydraulic jack of suitable capacity with pump

 Dial Gauges — Minimum 2 nos.
 Two bearing plates to suit the perimeter of the pile
 Two glass plates of size 40 x 40 mm
 Datum Bar,
 MS pipe of suitable diameter & length to fill the gap between jack
and pile
 Bricks, cement, sand to support the jack.
 Tools for Excavation
 Record Book

Page 4

2.2.2 TESTING PROCEDURE

 Piles to be load tested shall be so designated on the drawings or

specified /selected.
 Test load shall be applied to the piles by a hydraulic jack with a remote
control pump at Pile COL. Test load applied shall be such that a
constant load is maintained under increasing settlement. Load shall be
applied in equal increments of 20 percent of the estimated safe load
and test should be perform upto 2.5 times of safe load or
displacement attains a value of 12mm , whichever is occur earlier . The
increment of the load shall be applied after the rate of displacement
is less than or equal to 0.1 mm per 30 min subjected to minimum of 30
minutes. On the basis of tabulated results the plot between lateral load
& deflection were plotted & shown in Fig.2.

4.0 RECOMMNDATION AND CONCLUTION

On the basis of experiment work on vertical compression load test &
lateral load test load test were evaluated and the following
recommendation are offered.

4.1 The vertical displacement were calculated on the basis of design

vertical compression load test on pile, The results are given below:-

PERMISSIBLE
SAFE LOAD  TEST LOAD   SETTLEMENT
PILE ID  SETTLEMENT
(TONNE)  (TONNE)  (mm)
(mm)

P‐1  16.0  40.0  5.67  18.0

4.2 The lateral deflection were calculated on the basis of design lateral
load test on pile, The results are given below:-

PERMISSIBLE
