METHOD STATEMENT FOR INITIAL

STATIC VERTICAL COMPRESSION
LOAD TEST OF BORED
CAST IN-SITU PILE
METHOD STATEMENT FOR INITIAL STATIC VERTICAL COMPRESSION LOAD TEST

1.0 PURPOSE

The purpose of this document is to detail the procedure for conducting initial static vertical load
test by on a 500 mm diameter test pile with a view to check the design load capacity to be
assigned to the piles for working purpose and analysis of load taken by the test pile by skin
friction and end bearing adopting IS Code of IS 2911 – Part 4-2013 where applicable.

2.0 SCOPE

Scope of work will involve preparation of scheme for testing, making arrangement and
conducting initial vertical load test applying vertical compressive load on top of the test pile,
observing and recording settlement data / results obtained during load test, submission of all
data along with inference to the Engineer or his representative. The interpretation of result shall
be as per in line with Cl. 7.1.5 (a) of IS 2911 – Part 4-(2013) or as per any other specific norms
of concerned department.

Load test procedure and method shall be as per IS 2911 – Part 4-(2013) and tender specification.

3.0 PROCEDURE

The procedure described below includes selection of test pile location, making arrangement and
conducting pile load test applying vertical compressive load on top of test pile in increments by
means of hydraulic jack taking reaction from the reaction piles constructed in the vicinity of test
piles, by primary and secondary girders as described in the sketch recording settlement by
suitably positioned dial gauges and submitting the test results.

3.1 SELECTION OF LOCATION OF TEST PILE:

Location of the initial test pile shall be decided prior to installation of test pile from approved
drawings or as instructed by client.

3.2 DETAILS OF TEST PILE:

Test Pile Diameter:

Founding Level:
Top Level of test pile:
Date of casting:
Grade of concrete:
Depth of pile from cut-off level:
Test level:
Safe load as per drawing:
Test Load = 2.5 times safe load =
3.3 PREPARATION OF PILE HEAD:

The test pile head shall be chipped off up to the test level to the natural horizontal plane. Pile
concrete at the test level shall be sound.

The projecting reinforcement shall be cut off and the pile top is finished smooth. A coat of thin
layer of Plaster of Paris (not more than 2mm) or fine mortar shall be applied to level the surface, if
required. A bearing plate (about 25mm thick) shall be placed covering top of pile head for jacks to
rest. In order to adjust the gap between the pile head and the bottom of girder, if required number of
plates may be used.

4.0 FIXING OF DATUM BAR:

During application of load, settlement shall be measured with respect to datum bars resting on
immovable supports. The datum bar support shall be at a distance of 3D (or subjected to minimum
2m) from the edge of the pile, where D is the pile stem diameter.
Four dial gauges with 0.01mm sensitivity shall be positioned approximately at equal distance on
Diametrically opposite side of the pile and would be held by magnetic base on the datum bars.

Details of equipment/apparatus used are given below:

Equipment/apparatus Nos. Details

Hydraulic Jack 1  500 MT orione make : Ram Area =706.9 cm2
Jacks shall be fitted with suitable locking devices
for maintaining loads.
Pressure Gauge 1  Wika make
 Calibrated through NABL lab.
 Range – 0-1000 kg / cm2
 Least count = 20 kg/cm2
Dial Gauge 4  Mercer : 2nos & Baker -2 no.
 Calibrated through NABL lab.
 Range = 0 – 50 mm travel.
 Sensitivity (Least count) = 0.01 mm

4.1 APPLICATION OF LOAD AND RECORDING OF TEST RESULTS :

Vertical compressive Load on top of pile shall be applied by means of a group of a no of hydraulic
Jack. Resultant capacity of the jacks shall be more than the final load to be applied. The test shall be
carried out by applying a series of vertical downward incremental load. Each increment i.e. stage of
load to be applied shall be about 20% of required design load of pile.

For application of load and measurement of settlement/ rebound calibrated pressure gauge and dial
gauges are to be used as mentioned above in equipment details.
At each stage of loading , settlement of pile shall be recorded accurate to 0.02 mm at an interval of
15,30,45,60,90,120 minutes up to a time when the rate of movement of pile top is not more than
0.2mm/hr or until 2 hr have elapsed, whichever is earlier subjected to a minimum of 1hr.

The maximum test load shall be maintained for 24 hours and settlement shall be taken at every 1
hour interval, including initial 1 hour.

4.2 PREPARATION AND SUBMISSION OF TEST RESULTS :

Based on the observation and recorded data the Contractor shall prepare –
i) Tabular and Graphical representation of Load vs. Settlement in arithmetic scale during loading
and unloading.
ii) Tabular and Graphical representation of the Time vs. Settlement for each load stage.
