TITLE
Aggregate Abrasion Value (AAV)

3
OBJECTIVES

The aim of the aggregate abrasion value test is to determine the wart and tear
(abrasion) of coarse aggregate due to its relative action between the aggregate
and steel charges

4
APPARATUS AND DIAGRAMS

1. WEIGHING BALANCE
2. LOS ANGELES ABRASION MACHINE
3. SIEVE SIZES (20mm, 14mm, 10mm and 1.7mm)
4. WIRE BRUSH
5. ABRASION CHARGES (11)

THEORY

5
Due to the movement of traffic, the road stones used in surfacing course are
subjected to wearing action at the top. Resistance to wear or hardness is hence
an essential property for road aggregate, especially when used in weary course.
Thus, road stones should be hard enough to resist the abrasion due to traffic.
When fast moving traffic fitted with pneumatic tyres move on the road, the soil
particles present between the wheel and road surface causes abrasion on the
road stones. Hence, in order to test the suitability of road stones to resist the
abrasion action due to traffic, tests are carried out in the laboratory.

Los Angeles Abrasion Test is used to find out the percentage wear due to relative
rubbing action between aggregates and steel balls used as abrasive charges. The
Los Angeles Abrasion test is a common test used to indicate aggregate toughness
and abrasion characteristics. For an aggregate to be satisfactory in pavement, it
must be sufficiently hard to resist abrasive effect of traffic over a long period of
time and must be able to transmit load from the pavement surface to the
underlying sub-soil.

CLASSIFICATION OF ABRASIVE VALUES

<30% STRONG Used in pavement works

30-50% WEAK Used in concrete works
>50% VERY WEAK It is completely useless

6
PROCEDURE

1. We got a sample of the coarse aggregate to be used in carrying out the

experiment.
2. We arranged the sieves in ascending order i.e. 10mm, 14mm, 20mm.
3. The sample was poured into the sieve and was shaken thoroughly to ensure
even distribution.
4. The sample that was retained on the 14mm and 10mm sieve were collected
and weighed. 2500g of sample retained on the 14mm and 10mm sieve was
separated.
5. The samples collected were added together to form a collective of 5000g of
coarse aggregate to be used for the test.
6. The aggregate was poured into the abrasion machine and 11 abrasion
charges were added. The machine was shut and put on.
7. The machine was put on for 15 minutes which approximately was equal to
500 revolutions. Note: the speed of the abrasion machine is 33rev/min.
8. After 15 minutes, the machine was switched off. We emptied the content
of the abrasion machine into the pan beneath it.
9. The abrasive charges were removed and the content was separated using
the 1.70mm sieve. Both fractions i.e. the fraction that remained on the
sieve and the fraction that passed through were measured.

7
DATA AND CALCULATIONS

Total mass of prepared samples = 5000g

Mass of fraction that passed through the sieve 1.70mm = 2359g

%finess= B/(X+Y) × 100

B= The mass of fraction passing sieve 1.70mm

(X+Y) = The mass of sample used.

%FIness = 2359/5000 ×100

= 47.18%

8
OBSERVATION

✔ It was observed that the coarse aggregate was subjected to wear in the
abrasion machine causing it to break into smaller granules.
✔ It was also observed from calculation that the abrasive value is

9
PRECAUTIONS

✔ We ensured that all the 5000g of the sample were poured completely into
the Los Angeles Abrasion Machine.
✔ We ensured that all the 11 abrasive charges were put into the machine.
✔ We ensured that the trap door of the machine was completely shut.
✔ We ensured that the timer began to read at the push of the ON button of
the machine.
✔ We ensured that the machine was switched off at the sound of the timer.
✔ We ensured that all the content in the abrasion machine were emptied into
the pan beneath it.

10
ERROR

✔ There was no noticeable error during the experiment. The only error the
experiment was susceptible to was error due to little variation in weight
during the 1.70mm sieve separation. Some of the particles which were
mostly in powder form might have escaped in the air causing variation in
the final weight.

11
CONCLUSION

After the test was carried out, from calculation, it was observed that the abrasive
value of the sample used is 47.18%. Therefore, the coarse aggregate cannot be
used for any kind of pavement work as it is weak and has poor durability in
pavement surfacing. This kind of coarse aggregate is only suitable for concrete
works as it satisfies the condition for concrete work materials which is (30-50%).
