4. REACTION SYSTEM

The reaction system called Kentledge shall be prepared, comprising of steel I-beams (cross
beam, test beam, rocker beam, etc) and sand bag for counter weight against which the pile
shall be tested. Crib wall was made by Sand bag (refer to Fig 1).

5. TEST METHODOLOGY & EQUIPMENTS

The general guideline of ASTM 1143 “Standard Method of Testing Piles Under Static
Axial Compressive Load” was followed. For evaluation of result IS 2911-IV was followed.

Reaction System- Static axial compressive load was conducted by hydraulic jack acting
against steel platform counterweight kentledge as reaction system. Kentledge was
prepared, comprising of steel I-beams (spreader beam, main beam, rocker beam etc.) and
sandbags. Crib walls were made by sandbag crib wall with a base of 2.2 m width to top
0.50 m & height 1.55m.

Following equipment were used in the testing scheme:

Item Specification Quantity Remarks

Hydraulic Jack 750-ton 2 1 nos
Pressure Gauge 1000kg/cm2 1 1no for each jack
Dial Gauge 0.01~50 mm 4 2 nos in each test
Hydraulic Piston Pump 900 kcf/cm2 2 1 motorized, 1 manual

Page 5 of 10 SE-G-RPT-06-A1
Construction Team Denim Studio Ltd. Unit-1 Report on Static Load Test on Precast Pile

The load on pile was applied by using hydraulic jack seated on bearing plate. Piston pump
was used to develop pressure. Calibrated pressure gauges fitted with jack to monitor load.

25% of proof load was added with counter weight to avoid the tilting of kentledge. Total
load of the kentledge was about 430 Mt > 385 Mt (110% of 350 Mt).

Measurement of Pile Head Settlement- An independent reference frame was setup to

permit measurement of the displacement of the pile head. The supports for the frame
founded in such a manner and at such a distance from the test pile that displacement of the
ground in the vicinity of the equipment does not cause displacement of the reference frame
during the testing.
Four micrometers of accuracy up to 0.01 mm and stroke of 50mm (2 nos) were used to
measure settlement with respect to horizontal reference beam fixed on the ground. The dial
gauges were placed in diametrically opposite positions and equidistant from the pile axis.

Loading Procedure- The maximum load to be applied on the pile has been specified as
300% by the engineer. The loading and unloading have been performed in stages, and this
loading and unloading stages are shown in (Appendix-3). In the event of a failure (as
indicated by excessive pile head displacement) further loading shall be halted and
maximum applied load shall be maintained for 12 hours. After wards, unloading sequence
shall be undertaken. Hence, at maximum loading as the failure has not been occurred,
further load has been increased up to 300% of the design load.

Following each application of an increment of load, the load was held for not less than the
period shown in [Appendix-3], or until the rate of settlement is less than 0.25mm/h and is
slowing down. The rate of settlement has been calculated from the slope of the curve
obtained by plotting values of settlement versus time and drawing a smooth curve through
the points. Each stage of unloading shall proceed after the expiry of the period is also
shown in [Appendix-3],

Supervision-The contractor maintained adequate experienced personnel for performance

of the test. During the progress of a test, the testing equipment and all records of the test
as required shall be available for inspection by the engineer.

7. ACCEPTANCE AND CONCLUSION

TP-02 was tested under static axial compressive load. Pile is of 400x400 mm and 12 m long from
pile top level. Pile was given 2217 kN (1.29 times of working load) of load that resulted in gross
settlement of 44.91 mm and net settlement of 35.01 mm.

As ASTM provides test procedures/methodology only. The test is performed as per ASTM 1143.
However, ASTM does not specify the method of working out the safe pile load carrying capacity.
Hence different methods are available for estimating ultimate carrying capacity of piles. Off them,
we have estimated ultimate capacity by:

• Davisson Offset Limit Method,

• IS 2911 and BS :8004

Davisson Offset Limit Method

An offset is drawn parallel to elastic compression line (PL/AE) based on the equation proposed by
Davisson (1972);
Offset distance = 4mm + b/120
Where, b is diameter of pile and 120 is constant.
Offset line is drawn and presented in the appendix, But the line does not intercept load-settlement
curve, thus ultimate load cannot be estimated by this method as the offset line doesn’t cross the
settlement curve. However, from the projected exponential curve we can estimate ultimate capacity
2040 kN (192.6 MT).

As per Clause 7.1.5, IS 2911 (Part 4) 2013 “The safe load on single pile for the initial test should
be least of the following:

a) Two thirds of the final load at which the total displacement attains a value of 12 mm unless
otherwise required in a given case on the basis of nature and type of structure in which case, the
safe load should be corresponding to the stated total displacement permissible. (Referred by BS
:8004 also)

b) 50 percent of the final load at which the total displacement equal 10 percent of the pile diameter
in case of uniform diameter piles and 7.5 percent of bulb diameter in case of under-reamed piles.”.

As per Clause 6.1.5, IS 2911 (Part 4) 2013, pile safe load carrying capacity can be determine from
actual settlement curve. From the load-settelement curve we can estimate safe bearing capacity 1100
kN [112 mt] (1650x2/3 kN)

As per clause (b) load against 10% of settlement is 2180 kN (222 Mt) is ultimate capacity of pile

Page 9 of 10 SE-G-RPT-06-A1
Construction Team Denim Studio Ltd. Unit-1 Report on Static Load Test on Precast Pile

From above result & on the basis of working pile construction method & quality performance we can
consider ultimate capacity of 2180 kN. So, the maximum recommended working load for pile can
consider 1100 kN or 112 MT with a practical settlement 8.01 mm.
