AGGREGATE CRUSHING VALUE TEST (I.S 2386 part-IV)
The aim of this laboratory test is to determine:
• Crushing strength of aggregate
APPARATUS
• Cylindrical measure (11.5 cm dia and 18 cm depth) for sample preparation.
• Steel cylinder of internal diameter of 15 cm having both ends open.
• Square base plate and a plunger having diameter less than that of the cylinder.
• Steel tamping rod having diameter of 1.6 cm and length from 45 to 60 cm.
• Balance of capacity more than 3 kg (accuracy up to 1gm).
• Compression testing machine of 40 tons capacity having 4 tons/minute loading
rate.
• I.S. Sieve of sizes 12.5 mm, 10 mm and 2.36 mm

THEORY AND SCOPE
This is one of the major Mechanical properties required in a road stone. The
test evaluates the ability of the aggregates used in road construction to
withstand the induced stresses due to the road vehicles in the form of
crushing.
Due to this parameter, the aggregates should also provide sufficient resistance
to crushing under the roller during construction and under rigid tyre rims of
heavily loaded vehicles.
The crushing strength or aggregate crushing value of a given road aggregate is
found as per IS-2386 Part- IV.

EXPERIMENT NO. 03
PROCEDURE
1. First the aggregate in dry condition, passing through 12.5 mm and retained on
10 mm sieve is taken for testing.
2. The cylindrical measure (11.5 cm dia and 18 cm depth) is filled from the test
sample of the aggregate in three layers of approximately equal thickness, each
layer being tamped 25 times by the rounded end of the tamping rod.
3. After the third layer is tamped, the aggregates at the top of the cylindrical
measure are leveled off by using the tamping rod as a straight edge, and the test
sample is weighed as W2 gm. Empty cylinder weight is recorded as W1 gm.
4. Now the cylinder of test apparatus is kept on the base plate and one third of the
sample from cylindrical measure is transferred into the steel cylinder and
tamped 25 times by rounded end of the tamping rod.

PROCEDURE
5. Likewise, aggregates are filled in three layers, each layer being tamped 25 times.

6. Now the plunger is placed on the surface of aggregate test sample in the cylinder and
transferred to the compression testing machine.

7. Load is then applied through the plunger at a uniform rate of 4 tons per minute until
the total load is 40 tons. The machine is stopped, and the aggregate sample is taken
out of the cylinder.

EXPERIMENT NO. 03
Procedure
8. The total aggregate from the cylinder are removed and sieved on a 2.36 mm IS sieve

9. The fraction passes this sieve is collected and weighed as W3 gm.

10. Aggregate crushing value = (W3 / W2-W1) x100

11. The above steps are repeated for the second sample of the same aggregate and then
average of the two tests is reported as aggregate crushing value.
