Aggregate Crushing value test.

OB
ult:

Aggregate crushing value = 16.26%

Result Analysis:

1.The value is higher when more percentage of aggregates crush and break into smaller pieces which
indicates the aggregates are of a lower quality.Aggregate crushingvalue < 45% for aggregates used for
concrete for non-wearingsurfaces and <25% for wearing surfaces like runways and roadways.

Discussion:

e 1.Sample can expel from the mound because the mound not closed. Mound can affect the
errormeasuring reading.2.Heavy crushing mound and machine may not relevance to do the work
outside thelaboratory.3.The crushing machine is damage and can’t do the experiment.

DISCUSSION AND RECOMENDATION Discussion: Sample can expel from the mould because
the mould not closed mould can affected the error measuring reading.Heavy crushing mould
and machine may not relevance to do the work outside the laboratory.

Recommendation: Report

In this experiment, we are using 2780g of 14mm size of aggregates sample. The
weight of aggregate passing the 2.36mm sieve was 560g and the weight of
aggregate retained on the 2.36mm sieve was 2220g. The aggregate crushing
value that we obtained from the experiment is about 20.1%. We are satisfied with
this value since it is lower than the ASTM requirement, which is 35%. Hence, we
recommend that this type of aggregate is suitable use to construct the highway
road and can withstand heavy traffic load.

CONCLUSION In conclusion, the aggregate crushing value that we obtained

from the test is about 18.05%. We are satisfied with this value since the
percentage of aggregate crushing value is less than the standard value of 35%.
Hence, this type of aggregates are the suitable materials to sustain the heavy
njtraffic load.
CONCLUSION

After conducting this experiment, we can say that it is very important to test the
aggregates in order to construct a quality pavement for the highway construction. Thus,
the result of the experiment, the aggregates impact value is 11.67%. This value is
acceptable because it is between 10% - 20% which classified as very tough or strong
for the road. On the other hand, the objective is achieved.

Concrete Testing – Cubes and Cylinders

As discussed above, the time frame for the testing will vary project to project though generally
they are tested in 7 days and 28 days. Concrete testing is done to make sure that the assumed
characteristic strength during the design.

What is compressive strength?

Factors affecting the Compressive strength of concrete

There are many factors that affect the strength of concrete. Out of which seven of them are
listed below.

 Quality of the materials such as cement, coarse aggregate, fine aggregate, and water

Water Cement ration

Air entrainment
Aggregate proposition (Coarse: Fine)
The ratio of Aggregate to Cement
Use of Admixtures
Curing period
Time after concreting
Testing Procedure

 Make sure the test cube or cylinder is dry

 Measure the weight of the specimen
 Place the specimen in the bearing plates  of the machine as shown in the following figure

 Align properly on the plate with the axis of loading. Maintain the accuracy of ±1% from the
size of the specimen between the center axis of the specimen and the lower plate.
 Gradually increase the load until it fails. The rate of loading is 0.6 ± 0.2 N/mm2/s
 Record the maximum force from the machine
The same procedure is followed in the testing of concrete cylinders also.

Compressive strength can be calculated from the following equation

Compressive Strength = Applied Maximum Load / Top surface area of the specimen
Failure Method

The failure method of the cub or cylinder is taken into account when the results are given. If the
cube or the cylinder is failed unsatisfactory, the test specimen is disregarded.

The following criteria given in the BS EN 12309-3 can be used to identify the
satisfactory/unsatisfactory failure modes.

very important to examine the failure method after testing and before considering the strength of
the specimen as a result.

discussion

Aggregate Impact Value test determines the Aggregate Impact Value (AIV) of
aggregates which provides a relative measure of the resistance of an aggregate to
sudden shock or impact.

Resistance of the aggregates to impact is termed as toughness. Aggregates used in the

pavement should be able to resist the effect caused by the jumping of the steel tyred
wheels from one particle to another at different levels causes severe impact on the
aggregates.

Lower the aggregate crushing value greater will be the “resistance to to sudden shock
or impact (toughness)”.
