3.AGGREGATE CRUSH ING VALUE TEST.

( IS : 2386 -.PART - 4 )

INTRODUCTION:

The principal mechanical propertie s required in stones are (i) satisfacto1y resistance to
crnshing under the roller during constrnction and ii) aiclequak resistance to surface
abrasion under traffic .

Aggregates used in road constrnction , shoukl be strong enough to resist crushing under
traflic wheel loads. If the aggregates are weak the stability of the pavement struchlre is
likely to be adversefy a.ffocted . The strength of coarse aggrega.tecs is assessed by
aggregates crnshing test. Tbe aggregate crushing value provide a reil.at ive measure of
resistance to crushing under a gradually applied compressiv,e load. To achieve a. high
quality of pavement, aggregate po se sing low aggregate crusbing value slmuld be
prefeff ed.

Object:

To determine the, aggregate cruslti.ng value by compre sive te ting machine .

Apuarnt n :

a.) Steel cylinder with open ends and internal diameter 152mm square base plate,
plunger having a piston of diameter l SO:nun, with a hole provided a.cross the stem of the
plunger so that a rod could. be insert,ed for lifting or phdng the plunger in the cylindeL

b) Cylindrical measure having inlemail diameter of 115mm and beigbt 180unn.

c) Steel ta.rnping rod with one rounded end lmving a diameter of 16mm and length 450 to
600mm.

d) Ballance of capadty 3 kg with accuracy up to lgm.

e) Compre, ssive testing machine capable of applying load of 4!0 tom1es, aJ a unifonn rate
ofloading of 4 tom1es per r.ninute .

Proced ul'e:

The a.ggregate passing 12. Smm IS sieve and retained on l Omm IS siev,e is seilected for
standard test. The aggregate should be in surface dry condition before te ting. The
aggregate may be dried by heating at a temperature IOO'°C to 110°c for a period of 4!
hours and is teste d after being cooled to room temperature..

The cylindricail measure is filled by the test sarnpile of aggregate in three layers of
approximately equal depth, each llaye1·being trunJ)ed 25 times by the rolmd,ed end ofthe
tamping rod . After the third layer is ta111ped , using the tamping rod as a straight edge
levels off the aggregate at the top of the cylindrical measure. About 6. 5kg of aggr, egat,e is
re.quired for preparing two test saii1niples. T11e test sample thus taken is then weighed . The
same w,eight ofthe sarnprne is taken in the repeat test.

The cylinder of the test apparatus is placed in po sition on the ba e plate ; one tl:iird of the
test saiiuipWe is place d in this cylinder and t amped 25 times by the tamping rod . Similarly,
0

the other t\vo patis of the test specimen are aclde,d, ,each layer being subjected to 25
blows. The total depth of the material in t11e, cylinder after tamping shall ho\vever be
lOOmm . The surface of t11e aggregat,es is leveled and the p lrn1ger inserted so that it rests
on thi urface in level po sition . The cylinder with the test sample and the plunger in
position is placed on cornpre sion testing machine. Load is then applied through th.e
plunger at a uniform rate of 4 tonne per n:tlnute until the total load is 40 tonne and then
the load. is released. Aggregates including the crushed portion are removed from the
cylinder and sieved on a 2 . 36mm IS sieve. The material, which passes this si,eve is
collected .

The above cnkshing te-st is repeakd on second sampWe of the same weight in accordance
with above test procedure . Thus two tests are made for the same specimen for faking an
avecrage value.

Calculation:

The aggre, gate cmshing value is defined, as a ratio of the weight of fines pas ing th.e
spedfied IS sieve to the total weight ofthe sample expresse,d as a perc, entage.

100 W2
Aggregate crushing value =
\.V I

\Vhere, WI = Total weight of dry sample .

W2 = \¥eight oft.he portion of crushed rnaterial passing 2 .36mm IS sieve.

Results:

The mean of the cmshing value obtained il1 the two tests is repmte,d as tl1e aggregate
cmsh:ing value.

Limits :

The aggregate cmshing value for cement concrete. pavement ha ll not exceed 30%.

The aggregate crushing value for wearing surfaces shall not exceed 4.5 %.
