Wife : Hello honey, I have something to talk with you. Do you have some time?

Husband : Hello my lovely wife. Oh sure, anything for you. What is it that you want to
tell me?

Wife : I was wondering if you would like to spend time together since we have
been busy lately for our lovely son, Khairul. Besides, our son’s birthday is
just around the corner. So, I think this school holiday is the best time to
celebrate it.

Husband : Oh, that’s a good idea! I agree with you. Thus, I also want to take a rest
from work to spend a quality time with our precious family. So, tomorrow we
should apply for a leave okay?

Wife : Sure honey, I will ask for a leave from my boss.

Husband : What about the destination? Do you have some places in your mind?

Wife : Well, I have surveyed several travel agencies on the internet and I am
interested with one of the travel agencies named Fun For You agency. So,
tomorrow evening, let’s go to the agency.

Husband : Wow, what a hadrworking wife! You even have done a research about it.
Okay let’s go tomorrow then. I will pick you up from work and straight to their
place.

Wife : Okay, honey. I will wait for you tomorrow.

Travel Agent: Assalamualaikum and good evening. Please take a seat.

4
Wife : Waalaikumusalam and good evening too. Thank you.

Travel Agent: Welcome. How can I help you? Oh, let me introduce myself. My name is
Amni and I am one of the travel agents here and I am ready to serve
anything for you. That is our motto, Anything For You.

Wife : Oh, nice to meet you Miss Amni. I am Farha and this is my husband, Haikal.

Travel Agent: Nice to meet you too Mr. and Mrs. Haikal. Both of you look so good
together.

Husband : Thank you, Miss Amni.

Travel Agent: You’re welcome. Okay, how can I assist you?

Wife : We are looking for a holiday destination that is suitable for our family. We
have a ten years old son and we are planning to take him along for a
vacation to celebrate his birthday.

Travel Agent: Oh, you come to the right place Mrs. Haikal. Here is the catalogue and the
brochure that you can refer to. As you can see we have several places that
are suitable for a family trip with a kid such as Langkawi, Mount Kinabalu
and Singapore. May I know, what kind of holidays would you like to have?

Wife : I am thinking of a holiday that we can visit to historical places and learn their
culture.

Travel Agent: Ouh, in that case, it would be great if your family go to Singapore because it
is a well-known country with the unique historical places and different
culture than in Malaysia.

Wife : Absolutely, that’s what I like. Besides, we have never been there before. So,
Miss Amni, what kind of activities we can do in Singapore?

Travel Agent: Okay. In Singapore, you can visit many historical places such as Kranji War
Memories which honours those who were killed in the line of duty during
World War II. There are also The Battle Box which is a very interesting
historical place in Singapore. Apart from that, Singapore has Sultan Mosque
which was built in 1824 and it was the biggest mosque of the country with
some religion importance and famous historical monuments.

5
Wife : Wow, there are so many places to go! It seems amazing.

Husband : That’s a good idea but darling our son, Khairul is interested to go to the
historical places and learn their culture?

Wife : Hmm, I think Khairul doesn’t really into it but he can gain knowledge once a
while.

Husband : Ouh, I see your point honey, but I am looking forward from Khairul’s point of
view since it is his 10th birthday celebration.

Travel Agent: Don’t worry Sir. There is a place you can visit which suits a child. It is The
Mint Museum of Toys that boasts of more than 50 000 vintage toys of which
some are as old as 120 years. Definitely, the museum is a top contender
among quirky historical places in Singapore. Moreover, you can visit the
Universal Studio Singapore.

Wife : I think Khairul would probably enjoy visiting these places. May I know the
accommodation like the hotel, price and the facilities that are provided?

Travel Agent: Sure, the budget per person is RM1100 and in Singapore you will stay at the
3 to 4 star hotel and the room is very comfortable with a double, family and
single bed which is more than enough for your family and the room facilities
equipped with air-conditioner, shower, television and internet connection.
Apart from that, the hotel also provides a bar, restaurant and swimming
pool. It suits your son so much since kids nowadays can’t live without
internet.

Husband : That’s so true but it’s okay because we just want Khairul to spend quality
time with us instead of surfing the internet. Besides, the budget per person
is too expensive for me.

Wife : Oh really, Miss Amni could you give us a discount? It is for our son’s
birthday.

Travel Agent: Sorry Mr. and Mrs. Haikal, but it is a fixed price but I assure you that this trip
will be the most exciting trip in your life if you are willing to spend more.

Husband : Hmm, it seems exciting but the price is too expensive from the budget plus

6
in the Universal Studio Singapore it will cost us more.

Wife : It’s okay honey. Miss Amni. Is there any possible package according to our
budget?

Travel Agent: Let me see, but may I know the budget per person that you estimate?

Husband : The price that is lower than RM1000 would be nice.

Travel Agent: Okay, anything for you Sir Haikal. So, here is the suggestion which is Mount
Kinabalu and Langkawi which both cost RM800 per person.

Husband : Wow, I like to go to Mount Kinabalu. It has been a long time since I’m
thinking of a cooler and tropical climate and it suits our budget.

Wife : It looks nice and would be best for us too since we have been tired of
working to enjoy the nature. What type of accommodation that the agency
provides in Mount Kinabalu?

Travel Agent: In Mount Kinabalu we only provide tents that suits a family since it is an
adventurous type of holiday.

Wife : What? Ouh, there is no chalet we can check in or a restaurant there?

Travel Agent: Yeah, there is no chalet and restaurant because this trip is designated for a
fully adventurous holiday.

Husband : Ouh, that will be amazing if we want to feel the most adventurous holidays
ever and if we are still young and energetic.

Wife : Yeah, besides we must think our son’s safety. He is only 10 years old. It
would be dangerous for him to hike even if we are with him.

Husband : I agree with you, we have to wait for another 5 years at least to bring him to
a place like this.

Travel Agent: Don’t worry Mr. and Mrs. Haikal. We have the Langkawi package that I
guarantee will not waste your time and money but give you the best holidays
ever.

Wife : The motto suits you well. You are so understanding. So, what kind of

7
activities that we can enjoy there?

Travel Agent: You can do a lot of things such as jet-skiing, parasailing, banana boating,
snorkelling, diving and kayaking along the tranquil Kilim River as well as
island-hopping and eagle feeding excursions in Pulau Dayang Bunting.

Husband : Wow! I like to try all of those things with Khairul. Is there any beach safety
like life jackets, band aids and the beach guard?

Travel Agent: Definitely, we have all of the safety steps. Don’t worry your safety is our
priority. In addition, we also have classes for children to learn how to surf
correctly to have fun on the sunny beaches peacefully and safe.

Husband : Wow, That’s so exciting! I also haven’t had surfing for a long time.

Wife : Hmm, I started to think that Langkawi is more exciting for our vacation.

Husband : Yeah, of course and it only costs us RM800 per person which is cheaper
than our budget. I think this is more interesting. Khairul will enjoy doing
those activities. Don’t you think so darling?

Wife : Yes, I couldn’t agree with you more. Miss Amni, what about the hotel?

Travel Agent: Your family will stay at 3 stars hotel with a double and a family room.

Wife : Ouh, it suits us since we are going together with our child. What about the
room facilities?

Travel Agent: The room is equipped with shower, television and air-conditioner.

Wife : Lastly, what about the hotel facilities?

Travel Agent: The hotel has a bar, restaurant and a free parking section which your car is
guarded.

Husband : That’s sound convincing.

Travel Agent: Yeah, right.

Husband : That’s not bad. Okay, let’s go with this. Do you agree with me honey?

Wife : No doubt about it. Let’s book it now.

8
Travel Agent: Okay, nice. How would you like to pay? In cash or by credit card?

Husband : In cash.

Travel Agent: When would you like to go for the holiday?

Husband : Some time during the last week of November because we both managed to
take leave on the same date.

Travel Agent: How long are you going to stay?

Wife : We would like to stay for a week.

Travel Agent: Okay, we are good now. Soon, we will inform the details. Please leave your
number here. Is there anything else I could help you with?

Husband : That’s all for now, thank you!

Travel Agent: You’re welcome.

Suicide is a kind of silent epidemic and it is ending your own life in such ways. It ruins
lives and devastates families and communities. It is sometimes a way for people to escape
pain or suffering. According to World Health Organization data, every 40 seconds, another
people commit suicide. When a suicide happens, the community always want to know, why
do teens commit suicide more than the older people? And also based on the newspaper
report entitled Suicide on the Rise Among Malaysian Youth on 2 July 2018 from The New
Straits Times, suicide is the second most leading cause of death among teenagers between
the ages of 15 and 29 in Malaysia.

14
The table above shows, the data increases and the introspection of the suicidal
cases. Some people consider their teenage years the happiest years of their lives but we
never knew what a every single adolescence in this world are going through. Young people
between the ages of 15 and 19, who is enduring neurological illness and any types of
addiction will easily commit suicide as their need is not being fulfilled. Apart from that, the
percentage of female who commits suicide higher than male because female often act
according to their feelings and doesn’t think carefully before takes an action.

Most teens who have been helped by the psychiatrist and psychologist and were
being interviewed after a suicide attempt, they said that what caused teen suicide are
because of feeling hopeless. So, the first reason to point out is feeling hopeless and
helpless. Suicidal teens thought that there are no solutions for their problem. The teens can
see no way out for their problem but death. They could not help but think that killing
themselves will settle down all these distresses. The teens feel like they have no control to
change their situations and fate but actually every single problem in this world, no matter if it
is small or massive one, there must be a way out for that problem, there must be a cure for a
pain and there must be a solution for every hardship. They just need to seek help from the
right person or organization. In proportion of this problem, American teen drama web

15
television series developed for Netflix by Brian Yorkey, based on the 2007 novel Thirteen
Reasons Why by Jay Asher which viral all around the world even in Malaysia. The series
portray a seventeen years old high school student, Hannah Baker who has committed
suicide after failing to cope with the culture, gossip and lack of support from her friends and
her school. In my opinion, it is a worth watching this series as it shows how a pure girl can
commits suicide for us to realize that every single thing is matter to one’s soul so that we can
prevent it from happens. There are always hope in every problem. This shows have created
a 13ReasonsWhy.Info site for whoever that needs a help from the experts. It is a solutions
and also in Malaysia, we have Befrienders Kuala Lumpur who ready to lend an ears, hand
and motivation.

The second reason teenagers commit suicide is bullying. Bullying takes on many
forms such as physical, verbal, cyberbullying and social isolation. Not all of us are blessed
with wealth, good figure, and intelligence. Those who are less fortunate that do not have all
this kind of things will face some hard time dealing with bullies. Most bullies will blackmail or
scare their victim in many ways such as use embarrassing facts about the victim to do their
job. Some of the bullies use internet, because nowadays cyber bullying is a prominent threat
and as a teenager myself I can tell, words do hurt, even from someone you don't know. The
internet allows people to leave anonymous messages that leave lasting imprints in our
minds. The views of other people looking at us causes self-image issues, which can then
lead to self-harm, and worse suicide. We must realize that bullying really exist between two
people alone. The person bullying isn’t the only influence, whether in school hallways,
parties or online. Those surrounding of bullying play apart too. Those who assist they may
not start it but they may encourage it by laughing and sometimes join in. It gives power to the
person that bullying and encourages them to continue. As an impact, the victim will feel more
pressure and lost self-esteem which lead to depression and even worst is suicide.

The third leading cause of suicide is abuse. Abuse comes in multiple forms, but the
most common being sexual and physical abuse. Some teens experience sexual abuse in
ways that many people don't even know. Maybe they have been raped until they are
pregnant and ashamed or worse they have become a sex slave for a life time. In high
school, people, girls especially, get harassed for what society did such as cat calling or a boy
hitting a girl on the butt. It may seem small to some human being, but when it leads to a girl
or boy being assaulted or raped, everything is brought to the surface. Sexual abuse is not
the only type of abuse, physical abuse is as much, if not more common than sexual.
Physical abuse can happen to anyone, anywhere, anytime. In many households across the
states, teens are being involved to physical abuse. Teens and kids are not deserve to be hit

16
or kicked by an adult, in any situation ever. Just because a teenager does something wrong,
it doesn't call for an adult, their parents to hit them. All that a teenager deserves is love,
patience and chances to fix themselves. It is okay to extend some teenagers with a little hit
with a cane on insensitive parts of their body such as on their sole. But when it gets to the
extent that children have to cover up their bodies to hide the bruises is when it becomes too
much. Physical abuse of course will bring harm to teenagers’ health. At some point that they
cannot stand it anymore and when there is nowhere to turn or maybe they were felt insecure
that even if they get help, the same thing will repeat over and over. So, that suicidal thought
will automatically sparks in their mind.

Last but not least in abusive problem is mental abuse, such as some parents just
pushed their children to study very hard until there is a body contacts or they have used
some bad words, unaware that what they are doing is actually abusive towards their
children. Meanwhile, abused teenagers is too timid to spill out what they feel all this time
even if that thing hurts. So, the only way they can save themselves from being hurt is by
killing their own selves. Teenagers shouldn't have to worry about school, socializing, and
then be afraid to go home at night. This leads to one of the highest rates of teen runaways
as well as suicide. In China, there is a leak video of a schoolboy name as Xiao Zhen who
apparently jumped to his death from a classroom window. Whatever was going through his
mind must have been too much to bear, he just straight jumps to the window without any
warning. These evidence shows that the China’s pressure-cooker society in education can
ruin young person’s entire future if they are unable to face it. The community especially
parents should know that a person have different capability that may have speaciality in
something else.

The fourth cause of depression is terminal illnesses. Many people don't agree that
people who have cancer or another terminal disease should give a hope that they can live.
Some people don't want to fight, they give up and are prepared to die. It maybe because
they cannot see clearly the purpose and vision of why they need to be alive. Teenagers don't
understand that there is so much to life that they would miss, so they refuse to fight and die
as a result. Some are just scared that since, hey here's life altering news that you could die
in two years, so that they even have a chance and commit suicide to make everyone's life
around them easier.

Moreover, the reasons why teenagers commit suicide is having a problematic

family sush as their parents are divorce, unstable financial and parents who addicted to
drugs and alcohol. All of these cause are leading to the emotional neglect to the children.

17
They need to stable their lives between the school life and the pressure at home at a very
young age. No soul can hold it for a very long time. These childs are having a nightmare on
their daily lives. They see their parents shouting and fighting every single time. As a result,
the children become poor in education, a problematic students and cannot be denied to
commit suicide as there are no supporting for them emotionally and physically to commit
suicide. It’s seems more easy for them as nobody cares for them after all.

The conclusion is, to most people suicide and depression are senile things, it's not a
major world issue so they don't need to worry about it. But trust me, to those three kids in
your daughter's literature class, depression is a real thing, and waiting to try to help until
after they are gone is useless. This is an epidemic that is not just a responsibility of our
government but it’s a greater responsibility to the friends, parents and schools. Those who
claim themselves as outsiders who don’t encourage the factors of suicide but they also don’t
defend those who are in struggled with their suicidal thoughts also need to be a heroes for
these people who crying for help. Let's raise that awareness, these kids deserve a chance to
live a long, healthy life. The key is don’t keep it to yourself, tell an adult that you trust like a
teacher, school counselor and parents and the others needs to offer comfort. We all play a
role.

Are Traditional Grades a Thing

of the Past?

In classrooms around America, hands go up every day with the question, “Is this for a
grade?” But perhaps a more pressing question would be "what is a grade for?" Today, the
grades on a child's report card reflect not only a grasp of academic subjects, but also a
variety of other factors such as attendance and behavior. Do traditional grading systems tell
us what we really want to know about a child's learning?

What’s wrong with traditional grading?

A lot, according to many experts. Under traditional grading, extra credit, late work, class
participation and non-academic assignments (returning a signed progress report, for
example) can influence a student’s score. These factors represent life skills which, while
important, don’t necessarily reflect a student’s content knowledge.

Ellis Middle School teachers Eric Harder and Curtis Bartlett saw issues with this firsthand at
their Austin, Minnesota school, where a hard-working student with good life skills might earn
a passing grade and yet fail a standardized test, but a student with sub standard life skills
and relatively poor grades might ace that same test. And if a substantial portion of a
student’s grade consists of these non-academic factors, then grade inflation (the awarding of

20
higher overall scores for lower quality work) can become an issue. Bartlett and Harder came
to see traditional scoring as potentially misrepresenting a child’s success in class.

The two 8th grade math teachers decided to study the problem of grading as part of a grant
partnership with the Hormel Foundation, the University of Minnesota and Austin Public
Schools. Their studies introduced them to Ken O’Connor’s book A Repair Kit for Grading: 15
Fixes for Broken Grades. O’Connor, an expert on assessment and evaluation, says that
traditional grading—which takes into account many non-academic factors such as behavior
and participation—isn’t necessarily a true representation of what kids really know.

Through O’Connor’s work, Harder and Bartlett saw a solution to this disparity: increase
evaluation accuracy by splitting students’ grades into more accurate component parts. What
began as an experiment by two curious teachers four years ago has since branched out into
a new assessment philosophy called Grading for Learning. Grading for Learning separates
the two elements of traditional grading by assigning each student a content knowledge grade
and a behavioral life skills grade. “We believe that it is impossible to give a student one letter
grade to help parents, teachers, colleges, and
even the students themselves to get a hold of what they have learned,” says Harder, a
veteran math teacher.

Knowledge grades . . .
Knowledge grades are letter grades based on both content knowledge and local, state and
national standards. These grades are “based on students’ performance on preset
standards,” according to a Grading for Learning overview, “not on students’ achievement
compared to other students.” Grading for Learning introduced some big changes in
knowledge-based assessment at Ellis:

 Students who complete all their practice work (commonly known as homework) can
retest
 Students whose quarter percentages fall below a 50% will be adjusted to a 50% to
give struggling students a better chance at passing a class
 Students are not awarded extra credit
 Students’ tests, quizzes and projects make up 90% of their knowledge grade, while
practice work comprises only 10%

21
The shift from homework to so-called practice work at Ellis is both semantic and
philosophical. “The word ‘practice,’ we found, has cleared some of [the homework debate]
up by having a word that means what we are doing. We are asking the students to practice
using the information we have been giving what we are doing. We are asking the students to
practice using the information we have been giving them,” says Bartlett, a 3rd year math
teacher.

. . . and life skills grades

The other half of Grading for Learning is the life skills grade, which involves four facets of
important student characteristics:

 practice (responsibility)
 preparation for class (responsibility)
 behavior (caring and respect)
 teamwork/participation (citizenship and fairness)

These characteristics are scored on a 4 point rubric in which 4 is “excellent,” indicating that a
skill is consistently practiced, and 1 is “unacceptable,” indicating a skill that is rarely
demonstrated by the student. Under conventional grading systems, academic dishonesty or
late work might have cost students points; now such issues are seen as behavioral, not
academic, and are reflected in the life skills grade.

Reactions to Grading for Learning

Harder calls Grading for Learning “more of a philosophy,” and one that meant changes both
in and out of the classroom. The program was a bit of a hard sell at first, and student scores
dropped without the padding of non-academic points. But ultimately, Grading for Learning
does seem to be making a difference. Data from the 2007/2008 to 2008/2009 school years
showed a “significant” positive increase in the correlation between students’ grades and their
performance on state standardized tests. And Ellis parents eventually came around:
parent/teacher communication resulted in parents having a better understanding of where
their child’s knowledge was in a subject. Frequent collaboration involving parents, students,
teachers, administrators and guidance counselors guarantees that modifications are

22
constantly being made to the program. “We realized that we were really changing a local
culture of education,” Harder says. Grading for Learning has been expanded to cover
approximately 900 Ellis
Middle School 6th-8th graders, and plans are in the works to adapt the program for
elementary and secondary students.

Harder is aware that this sort of change takes time. “We realize it will be many years . . .
before this is apart of standard practice,” he says. But Harder and his colleagues see this as
just the beginning of alarger shift in education: “School is learning, not the amassing of
points.”
