Automatic transfer switches Typical applications
Product description Eaton automatic transfer switches are designed to be operated
in a variety of applications requiring backup power. The most typical
Eaton’s automatic transfer switches are reliable, rugged, versatile, applications are shown below with a utility main source and
and compact assemblies for transferring essential loads and generator backup source in Figure 1. Figure 2 shows a generator

Eaton’s contactor-based transfer switch is rated 40–1200A and can
be supplied in separate enclosures for stand-alone applications or Utility–generator
can be supplied as an integral component
in the following equipment: Transfer switches are traditionally applied between a utility and a
generator set for emergency and standby power systems.

Application description
A transfer switch is a critical component of any emergency or
Load
standby power system. When power is lost from Source 1 (normal),
a transfer switch quickly and safely shifts the load circuit from
Figure 1. Standard Application Utility–Generator
Source 1 to Source 2 (emergency). This permits critical loads
to continue running with minimal or no outage. After power
to Source 1 has been restored, the retransfer process returns Generator–generator
the load circuit to Source 1. Transfer switches are sometimes applied between two generator
Contactor-based transfer switches are available with different sets for prime power use (often in remote installations). In such
operational modes, including: applications, source power is periodically alternated between the
generator sets to equally share run time.

Contactor construction Source 1
The Eaton open transition contactor transfer switch is available with
a two-position or a three-position mechanism. The transfer switch
with a two-position mechanism will transfer in phase between two
live sources. The transfer switch with the three-position mechanism
will transfer using a time delay in the neutral position.
The mechanism used to operate the Eaton contactor is a moment-
arily energized solenoid, consisting of a stationary core and a moving
core that are magnetically driven by an electrical coil. Both contactor
types have two cross shafts, one for Source 1 (S1) contacts and one
for Source 2 (S2) contacts. The design is such that the mechanism
is inherently interlocked so the device cannot be closed on Source 1
and Source 2 at the same time under any circumstances. When
switching from Source 1 to Source 2 or Source 2 to Source 1,
the mechanism will only allow a break-before-make operation
(open transition). The mechanism can be operated both electrically
and mechanically.
The two-position contactor does not have a neutral position and Source 2
is always closed on either S1 or S2. The two-position mechanism
has a single operating coil. The operation of the two-position
mechanism will provide an in-phase transfer. Microswitches
initiated by the Source 1 and Source 2 cross-shaft movement
provide position indication. Main Solenoid (trip solenoid

neutral, and S2. When connected to the neutral, the contactor is not
connected to any source power. The contacts are operated by the Three-Pole 1200A Contactor with Three-Position Mechanism
use of three solenoids: one main solenoid, one solenoid for source
select, and one for trip. The main solenoid provides the close action
for the Source 1 or Source 2 contact. The select solenoid directs the
contactor to close either Source 1 or Source 2. The trip solenoid will
trip either Source 1 or Source 2 contacts.
