Introduction

The Adani Group is a conglomerate with businesses in Resources, Logistics and Energy
sectors [1] The Adani group has interests in agribusiness too. It owns Fortune India’s largest
edible oil brand through a joint venture with Willmar in Singapore.

The Flagship Company of the Adani group is Adani Enterprises Limited. Adani is an Indian
conglomerate, having its footprint across the world. First generation entrepreneur Mr. Gautam
Adani is the founder & chairman of Adani Group. The corporate headquarters of the company is
situated in the city of Ahmedabad, India.

History

The Adani Group commenced as a commodity trading firm in 1988. The company quickly grew
and diversified into the import and export of multi-basket commodities. In the 1990s, it
developed its own port in Mundra to provide a base for its trading operations. In 1995, Adani
started construction at Mundra. In 1998, it became the top net foreign exchange earner for India.
Soon in 1999, the company commenced coal trading, followed by a joint venture in edible oil
refining in 2000 by forming Adani Willmar.

The group’s second phase started with the creation of large infrastructure assets. The company
established a portfolio of ports, powerplants, mines, ships and railway lines within and outside
India. At the same time, the firm also earned a reputation for scale, efficiency and quality. In
2002, Adani handled 4 million MT of cargo at Mundra, becoming the largest private port in
India. Later in 2006, the company became the largest coal importer in India with 11 million MT
of coal handling.

The company expanded its business in 2008 as they bought Bunyu Mine in Indonesia having 180
million MT of coal reserves. In the subsequent year, the firm started 330 MW thermal power
generations, followed by 2.2 million MT per annum edible oil refining capacity in India.

In 2011, Port of Dahej became operational and now has a capacity of 20 million MT capacities.
The company also bought Galilee Basin mine in Australia with 10.4 billion MT of coal reserves.

It also commissioned 60 million MT of handling capacity coal import terminal in Mundra,
making it the world’s largest.

Further in the same year, the Adani group also bought Abbot Point port in Australia with 50
million MT of handling capacity. It also commissioned India’s largest solar power plant of 40
MW. As the firm achieved 3960 MW capacity, it became the largest private sector thermal
power producer in India.

In 2012, the Adani Group took the next phase of growth. It has embarked on the third phase of
development – an integration infrastructure business. It revamped its logo and developed a new
identity. The company focuses on three important business clusters that include resources,
logistics and energy.

Chairman's message: A growth story


Since its foundation in 1988, the Group’s business has grown exponentially. Projections for the
next few years suggest the expansion is set to continue.
The back-story to our success is the growth of India’s middle class. Their demand for goods and
services places an ever-growing demand on the nation’s infrastructure, in terms of ports, power,
water and transportation.
The Government has struggled to keep pace and, as a result, invited the private sector to
contribute. The opening up of the energy and infrastructure markets is a huge opportunity for

Adani. Our coal mining, cargo handling and power generation activities are projected to increase
four to 10 fold over the next decade.

Adani are starting the most exciting phase of their development so far: creating an international
and integrated infrastructure business. This has three components: resources, logistics and
energy.

Each is successful in its own right and it has been estimated that the three together will account
for more than 90% of their revenues in the next decade. For resources and logistics, half their
revenue will come from integrated operations.

Statistics about the economic context and growth are important. But they risk missing the bigger
picture: Adani are here for their customers’ customers. Their mines, ports and power plants help
people to work, shop, cook, read and go about improving their daily lives.

Some of the milestones of growth in the journey of the Adani:

Acquisition of Coal Mines


Adani’s next phase of growth envisions taking the group’s asset base from $6 billion to $15

billion in the next five years. To fuel his ambitious plans, Adani is acquiring coal mines and
ships. These would serve to insulate the group from the price vagaries of the commodities and
shipping markets. Adani Enterprises would thus offer an integrated infrastructure play with coal,
power and mining under one umbrella.
The flagship company of the Adani group, Adani Enterprise (AEL) acquired the coal mines of
Australia's Linc Energy in a cash and royalty deal worth A$ 2.9 billion (Rs 12,220.6 crore) early
in August this year. The deal is reported to be the biggest acquisition by an Indian company in
Australia. Linc said it can produce up to 60 million tonnes per year once the mine was fully
operational.
The deal would give a major boost to the Rs 27,800-crore Adani group's expanding energy
business and would enable Adani to source coal at $45 a tonne against an average international
price last year of $76. In the pipeline are plans to invest about A$6 billion to create infrastructure
— ports, railway and development of mines — Down Under over the next five years. According
to the group’s chairman, Gautam Adani, the acquisition would help the company achieve self-
reliance in fuel supplies for its power generation business.
Coal from the Galilee basin would support the rapid expansion of the power business of Adani
Power in India as well as the expansion of AEL's coal business. It may be pointed out that the
Adani group is the largest importer of thermal coal in India.
Last month, the group has also signed a preliminary agreement in Indonesia to build a railway
line and coal terminal in remote southern Sumatra, Indonesia. Adani would invest $1.6bn to lay
down a railway line between a major coal pit and the island’s southern port of Tanjung Api Api.
The move by the Adani group is considered to be a strategic foray to tap the underexploited coal
stores in Sumatra.

Expansion of Power Generation Capacity:


The coal mine deals would give a significant impetus to the company's plans to increase its
power generation capacity. Adani Power Limited (APL) is looking to expand aggressively, with
plans to commission 1,980 MW of generation capacity by the end of fiscal 2011 and 6,600 MW
by mid 2012. Currently, APL operates 990 MW of generation capacity and aims at achieving
90% plant load factor during the current quarter.
APL’s 16,500 MW capacity generation projects include Mundra (4620 MW), Tiroda (3300

MW), Kawai (1320 MW), Dahej (2640 MW), Bhadreshwar (3300 MW) and Chhindwara (1320
MW). It is also exploring the opportunities in the international market to commission power
generation capacity.
The first unit of 330 MW at Mundra became operational in May, 2009. The Mundra facility will
continue to commission one 660 MW super critical unit each at an interval of every three-four
months, and the entire capacity of 4,620 MW will be operational by March 2011
APL’s 3,300 MW power generation facility at Tiroda in Maharashtra is in advance phase of
implementation, the first unit of 660 MW will start generation by August 2011 and the entire
facility of 3,300 MW will be commissioned in a phased manner by 2012. Its other projects at
Dahej, Chindrwara, Kawai and Bhadreshwar have received terms of reference from the ministry
of forest and environment and are in advance stage of clearance. The projects are likely to be on
stream by 2013-14. All plans of Adani are based on super critical technology units of 660 MW
each.
Meanwhile, APL is also setting up transmission lines for evacuating the power to the national
grid. The major transmission power line projects by APL include 400 KM Mundra -Dehgam
line, country’s first 1000 KM HVDC line in private sector between Mundra -Mahindragarh in
Haryana, 50 KM Mahindragarh-Bhiwani and 200 KM line between Tiroda-Warora.

Strategic Positioning of Mundra Port


Another Adani Group company, Mundra Port and Special Economic Zone Limited, owns and
operates one of the largest private sector commercial ports in India, a Special Economic Zone at
Mundra and a railway line between Mundra and Adipur; leading to strong synergies with the
company's projects being set up in close vicinity. In order to increase coal carriage capacities,
Adani is doubling the 65-km rail line connecting the port of Mundra to the national rail network.
This will help it carry three times more cargo. Mundra, once a sleepy town known for its date
palms until just a decade ago, today handles 40 million tonnes of cargo, and will soon start
handling 100 million tonnes once a coal import terminal comes up by October 2010.
The company is fast emerging as the only power generating company in the country that has a
strong chain of vertical integration - from mining to ports and shipping to power generation and
transmission. This integration has enabled the Adani group to achieve its meteoric growth, and
will hold it in good stead as it looks to further expand its business.

1. Board of Directors

The Board of Directors (“the board”) define the Company’s policy and overseas its
implementation in attaining these goals. The board is at the core your Company’s Corporate
Gover practice and overseas hoew the management severs and protects the long term interest
of all the stakeholders. This belief is reflected in our governance practices, under which we
strive to maintain an effective, informed and indepentant Board.

a) Composition of the Board:

The board comprises 8 Directors out of which 5 directors (63%) are Non-Executive
Directors. The company has an executive chairman and 4 independent directors comprising
half the total strength of the Board.

None of the directors on the company’s board is a member of more then 10 committees and
chairman of more than 5 committees (committees being audit committee,
shareholder/investors greiviences committees) across all the companies in which he is the
director. All the directors are made nessary disclosures regarding committee position held by
them in other companies and don’t hold the office odf directors in more than 15 public
committees.

The composition of the board is in conformity with Clause 49 of the listing agreement
entered into with Stock Exchanges.

b) Board Meeting and Procedure:

The internal guidelines for board/ board committee meetings facilitates the decision making
process at the meetings of the board/ committee in an informed and efficient manner.

Agenda papers and notes on papers are circulates to directors, in advance, in the defined
agenda format. All material informations are being circulated along with agenda papers for
facilating meaningful and focusseed at the meeting where it is not practicable to attach any
document to the agenda the same is tabled before the meeting with specific reference to this
effect in the agenda. In special and exceptional circumstances, additional or supplimeratry

come up after circulating of agenda papers, the same is placed before the Board by the way of
Table Agenda or Chairman’s Agenda.

2. Committees of the Board:

The Board committees play a cruel role in governance structre of the Company and have
been constituted to deal with specific areas /activites which concerns the company and need a
closer review. The board committees are set up under the formal approval of the Board, as a
part of good governance practice. The board supervises the execution of its responsibilities
by the committees and is responsible for their action. The board reviews the minutes of the

Your company does not have a material unlisted Indian Subsidiary, whose turnover or net

The Audit Committee of the company reviews the investments made by unlisted subsidiary
companies. The minutes of unlisted subsidiary companies are placed before the board of the
company.

A statement, wherever applicable of all significant transaction and arrangements entered into
by the Company’s subsidiary this is presented at the board of the Company at its meetings.

Health, Safety & Environment (HSE)

The HSE Management System of your Company is given the utmost priority by top
management. The management of your Company believes in a system which is top
driven, efficient, effective and adheres to the statutory requirements.
Having a well structured set up of Safety function, your Company has been accredited
with IS-18001 certification by 'Bureau of Indian Standard' for its Mundra, Tiroda and
Kawai plant, which clearly depicts the robustness of its safety management system.
Your company has well defined processes and system for Safety function which enable
us to take all safety measures for minimizing unsafe incidents. Accidents are investigated
thoroughly and analyzed for root cause so that reoccurrence can be prevented. As a part
of safety management system, a comprehensive Safety manual has been developed for
use by operating and safety personnel. SAP module for Safety is commissioned for
Mundra and Tiroda site; subsequently same is going to be replicated at Kawai sites.
Specialized Personnel Protective Equipments have been standardized and provided to
operating personnel for use in the work areas. Regulatory authorities and government
agencies carry out inspection/ audits with an aim for overall improvement in the Safety
performance at regular frequency.

Your Company gives paramount importance to environment. During the year, all the
three project sites Mundra, Tiroda and Kawai as well as operating units at Mundra
exercised great care to improve on the required environmental norms for emissions as
stipulated by the respective state pollution control boards and the Ministry of
Environment and Forests using, amongst other things, technology and state-of-the-art
equipment. Your Company has received environmental clearance for all its ongoing
projects. Your company has also initiated the process of getting accreditation of
Environment Management System as ISO-14001 for our Mundra Plant; subsequently we
shall also proceed for this certification for Tiroda and Kawai.
Your Company is deeply committed to sustainable means of conducting its operations.
Your Company has established Environment Divisions both at Plant level and corporate
level with competent officials who keep a close watch of all environmental parameters at
and around the plant site at Mundra and project sites at Tiroda and Kawai.

Education
To improve quality of education, our strategic interventions are of three fold i.e. Program support, Material
support and Infrastructure support:

The Foundation works towards improving the quality of education in the Government Schools
by upgrading the primary infrastructure facilities, adding value to the teaching process, skill
building training to the teachersEngaging with government officials on a regular basis, sharing of
information, experiences and ideas, seeking to increase their participation are seen as critical
steps towards relationship building and creating synergy.

Establishing and nurturing people led institutions like the School Management Committees,
engaging youth as a cadre of Education volunteers, undertaking awareness drives and organising
interactive forums to increase self-confidence are few of the multiple strategies adopted.

Efforts are also directed towards capacitating and instilling hope amongst school drop outs to
increase employability amongst the youth. Quality and excellence are the watchwords in
ensuring improvement in the access to education. To increase awareness amongst the community
members about the importance of education, address social factors affecting education amongst
the girl child in particular. A number of outreach activities undertaken are.

Material Support
To enhance the achievement level of students in school subjects, promote information
technology, inculcate reading habits amongst the children, improve awareness about health and
personal hygiene, facilitate active learning, encourage creativity and all round development,
material support is provided to the schools.

Foundation provides Reading corner/Library along with a set of magazines and books for the
library on a regular basis as well as health kits to the schools. To facilitate better functioning of
the schools and to improve the environment of the school and classrooms, furniture and teaching
aids are provided. Students of high school who have to commute more than 2 kilometers are
provided with bicycles to improve access to the school. Female students are given priority in this
initiative.

As a pilot initiative, Foundation has introduced e-learning software at the schools. E-learning is
an integrated learning program which has a software and hardware, that increases the teacher’s
effectiveness as well as enhances the knowledge of students. The Foundation has also provided
computers with a projector, apart from the Software with fun, at some places.

Adani Vidya Mandir (AVM) Ahmedabad
This school was started with the objective of providing free education to meritorious students,
coming from economically challenged backgrounds. The school provides all facilities to
recognise and enable deserving students to reach a definite status in their chosen fields and
facilitates the students’ progress in academics as well as co-curricular activities. The right kind
of pro-learning ambience, well equipped and well managed campus, a wide range of activities,
spacious classrooms, modern teaching aids, extracurricular activities and remedial coaching has
made the school demonstrate a model of schooling that is inclusive and compassionate.

Adani Vidya Mandir, Bhadreshwar. This Gujarati-medium school started in June, 2012 at
Bhadreshwar with an objective to provide free education to children of fishermen and
economically challenged parents. It is a similar model school like AVM, Ahmedabad. With the
only difference being that the medium of teaching was kept vernacular keeping in mind the
background of the students attending it.

Adani DAV public school


Adani DAV Public School is an English medium, Co-educational, Day-School which started
functioning in June, 2001 as a project school. It is managed by the Adani Foundation,
Ahmedabad, Gujarat in close collaboration with the DAV (Dayanand Anglo Vedic) College
Managing Committee, New Delhi. The school is affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary
Education (CBSE), Delhi and offers studies from Nursery to Std. XII. As the school works very
closely with the DAV education system, it follows the DAV curriculum along with the CBSE
one. The school offers Commerce and Science streams to the students of Std. XI and XII.
At Adani DAV Public School, one finds a learning environment that is student-friendly, stress-
free, yet intellectually challenging so that children spend the best years of their lives fruitfully.
The school encourages individuals to learn, unlearn and relearn. This is a place that tries to take
care of the individual differences of learners and also promotes individual talent.

Early Childhood Education

Balwadis
The Foundation runs Balwadis as per the need at labour colony and for fishing community to
provide nutrition to children in the age group 2.5 to 5 years; generate health awareness; impart
pre-school education and inculcate the habit of regular attendance. This initiative has been
started by the Foundation in Mundra, Gujarat.

Upgrading the Aanganwadis


AF supports in upgrading the services of all the Aanganwadis to a desirable level for a child’s
overall Psycho-Social Development. Joyful learning environment is also provided in the form of
“Building As Learning Aid” (BaLA), developing appropriate sanitation and hygiene through safe

drinking water and providings supplementary nutrition to Aanganwadis, Kishori/adolescent girls
and women in Anganwadis across all the sites.

Educational Assistance
• Employees, who have served the Adani Group (India) for more than 12 months and have
a monthly income of less than Rs.20,000, can avail of the educational assistance scheme.
An amount of Rs. 9000 per annum is provided for each child, from Standard I to XII for
upto 2 children from the family.
• People residing in Ahmedabad and belonging to the poor strata of the society also take
benefit of the education scheme. This scheme supports the students from the first
standard in school to post graduation. Students with a family income of Rs. 8500/- per
month are eligible to avail this assistance.
• Adani Foundation encourages bright students, who are unable to pursue their higher
studies after 12th due to poor economic status, by providing financial assistance for
professional courses. The students, who secure more than 70% marks in the qualifying
subjects and whose gross family income is less than Rs. 2 lakhs per annum, are eligible
for this assistance.

Meena Communicative Initiatives (MCI)

• To promote gender equality and increase awareness about the importance of girl child
and their education in particular, several activities are undertaken. Children are organised
into groups like Meena Manch and Meena Cabinet to develop administrative and
organisational conduct amongst them. Various competitions are organised for the village
women aimed at increasing participation of the women in children’s education. Meena
Balotsav and Bal Melas are organized to create awareness amongst the children to use
their leisure time constructively.
• Meena Manch and Meena Cabinet: An important approach under MCI was the formation
of Meena Manch and Meena Cabinet which included students who were regular and
showed progress. These two informal institutions were constituted by children from the
3rd to the 7th standard. There were weekly meetings with these students. The members of

the Manch and Cabinet were made to interact with students who were irregular in
attending school. The purpose was to understand the reason for their irregularity and
inform the teachers about it. These interactions helped many of the children to come back
and become regular.
• Competitions for Meena mothers: Several competitions like sports day, rangoli making,
salad making, storytelling, garba and so on are organised for the mothers to develop their
self- confidence and showcase their skills.
• Meena Balmela/Balotsav/Camps: AF organizes these activities so that children are
involved in various creative workshops to help them develop the concept of using their
leisure time in a constructive manner. Vacation camps are undertaken during the summer
and Diwali break to engage kids in innovative activities like Recycling Waste, Healthy
child-happy child, think-eat-save etc.
• Meena Mothers’ Meet: These are organised to develop rapport with the rural women
creating awareness regarding the role of the village education committee, emphasize the
importance of educating the girl child and the connection among factors like health,
hygiene, nutrition and nurturing. During the Meena mothers meet, various competitions
like sports day, rangoli making, salad making, storytelling, garba and so on are organized
for the mothers to develop their self- confidence and showcase their skills.

Community Health:
Working towards building a healthier community:
Adani Foundation is primarily engaged in improving the quality of health services, through easy
accessibility of the services to the community. Committed to “Health for all”, the Foundation
runs mobile health care units, rural clinics, special projects, variety of health related camps and
various need based programs. The Foundation adopts a holistic approach while addressing the
key issues and to ensure that the poorest of the poor are covered under the ambit of the health
initiatives.

Mobile Health Care Units: The Foundation operates mobile health care units, so that on-the-
spot medical assistance can be provided to the patients where medical facility is not available.
This program runs successfully at Mundra (Gujarat) covering 33 villages and 3 fishing
community vasahats, at Sainj (Himachal Pradesh) covering 30 villages at Tiroda (Maharashtra)
covering 18 villages, and is being initiated at Kawai (Rajasthan) in financial year of 2013-14.

Rural Clinics: The Foundation ensures outreach services by setting up rural clinics. Seven rural
clinics are functional at seven villages of Mundra Taluka providing much needed medical
services to the people of the villages. The clinics have a qualified Medical Officer, who provides
timely services to the people.

Health Camps: Various health camps are organised at regular intervals which are
seasonal/need-based to meet the specific needs of the community and to deliver medical services
to remote areas. The camps also ensure provision for timely referral services to the patients for
further or specialised care.

• General: This is a screening camp organised regularly as per the route map planned in
coordination with the village health committees.
• Gynecological care: Looking at the poor state of women’s health in rural areas,
gynecological camps are organised to encourage women to seek medical aid for their
reproductive health and well-being. Adequate pre-camp activities like IEC activities,
involving the grassroots level functionaries like the MPWs, community mobilisers,
school teachers, Anganwadi and Female Health Workers are undertaken. Services are
sought from practising women gynecologists to encourage women to discuss their
problems. Couples counseling, adolescent girls training, and other educational activities
are also undertaken.
• Cataract detection: Eye check-up and cataract detection facility is also provided to the
rural populace for early detection and referral services thereafter and support for surgery
if needed.
• HIV/AIDS–awareness & testing camp: Building awareness by providing information
about HIV/AIDS and other communicable diseases to the vulnerable population of

truckers and single male migrant laborers, pregnant women, persons suffering from
addiction of alcohol, tobacco, smoking etc. Testing camps are organised.
• Blood donation: To promote the concept of voluntary blood donation and seek
participation of people and to remove myths surrounding the activity, camps are
organised.
• Specialty & Multi-specialty camps: In addition to the above mentioned camps,
Foundation also holds Specialty & Multi-specialty camps, where specialist doctors of
various branches assembled and large number of patients benefit. Due information is
made available in advance, so that maximum number of patients are able to get
advantage.

Financial aid for urban and rural poor patients for chronic and severe illness:
Adani Foundation provides medical assistance for major diseases like, neurological problems,
heart problems, kidney problems, stroke and paralysis, cancer etc. to the people from the
disadvantaged and economically weak sections of the society.

Financial help is extended to patients for their treatment requiring surgery, dialysis, and
hospitalisation. Foundation has tied up with the chemist at Ahmedabad to provide medicines to
the patients free of cost.

Health awareness programs:


The community outreach programmes are undertaken by conducting health awareness campaigns
to make people aware about their role in prevention of several diseases and maintaining a healthy
lifestyle.

Under the Swasthya Sahayata Scheme, medical assistance is provided to the Adani Group
employees from lower cadres.

Scheme for Urban Poor:

To support the ailing persons or patients visiting the Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad, guidance is
provided by AF volunteers for availing treatment in various departments of Civil Hospital
Ahmedabad.
Special Initiatives
Foundation took two initiatives at Mundra, Gujarat:
1. Kidney Stone detection project and
2. Health Card to senior citizen

1. Kidney Stone – awareness, detection and intervention project:


High salinity of drinking water in the coastal areas leads to formation of kidney stone in people
living in these areas. Considering this aspect of community health, this project was launched to
make people aware of the disease and help in early screening of the same. Different IEC
activities are organised to mobilize people and motivate them to participate in the screening
camp. Subsequently, a detection camps are organised to diagnose the disease. As per the
diagnosis, either medication is provided, or Lithotripsy (a medical procedure that uses shock
waves to break up stones in the kidney, bladder, or ureter, after which , the tiny pieces of stones
pass out in urine). Under dire circumstances, surgery is recommended. All these procedures are
provided free of cost to the patient.
2. Health Card to senior citizen:
This initiative has been undertaken as a pilot project for three years. Senior citizens themselves
as well as the community they live in usually perceive them as “unproductive lot”. This makes
them a marginalized group. Moreover, the younger members of the family in Kutch area
generally migrate to cities to earn a living and the senior members of the family are left behind
alone in the rural areas. The Foundation has undertaken this initiative to address the needs of the
section of society – senior citizens - who are usually ignored by the rest. They face difficulty in
treatment for want of financial, social and moral support.To help the senior citizens with their
health care requirements and seek timely help, a special service has been initiated. After
conducting a routine health check up, a health card is issued to the senior citizens. Whenever
they are in need of medical treatment they can access cashless treatment in any of the 14
empanelled hospitals up to the extent of Rs. 75,000 over a period of 3 years. If treatment is
obtained in any other hospital, the hospital expenses are reimbursed to the extent of Rs. 75,000.

Special outreach services are provided by organising medical camps. Special provision is made
for the sick and infirm so that they can reach the health camp. If, in spite of such services the
patients are unable to reach the camp, a medically equipped team provides services at their
home.

Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC)


The Foundation works to complement the community led Total Sanitation Campaign
(TSC),which is now known as Rashtriya Swatchata Abhiyan initiated by the Government of
India. To make the program people centric, the Foundation helps in increasing hygiene related
awareness amongst the communities, encourages people to prevent open defecation and
mobilises the villagers towards achieving ‘Nirmal Gam’- Spotless Village status, the total
sanitation campaign was launched in the villages.

The programme recognises the diverse needs and capacities of the community and strives to seek
peoples’ participation in making the village an ideal place to inhabit. The aim is to help people
achieve 100% sanitation in their villages. AF has also provided models of disabled friendly
toilets in the villages.

Anemia Control Program at Tirora


A special integrated project called Anemia Control Program has been put in practice at Tirora, to
improve nutrition and health status and reduce anemia among women in general and adolescent
girls in particular. Under which, we organize camps with specialized doctors, who conduct
periodic screening tests for Hb and Sickle cell anemia and similar activities, to improve the
health status amongst the girls and the women. In this camp along with consultation, nutrients
were also provided. The foundation also imparted training and inputs, such as, providing seeds to
the groups to develop and maintain kitchen gardens to improve the nutritious value of their food
basket. We are initiating the same in other locations too.

Sustainable Livelihood Development:

Recognizing the strength of collective effort and organizing human resources’
optimization has been central to all initiatives undertaken.
The Foundation works towards improving the quality of life of the people by promoting
sustainable livelihoods through participatory, community based approaches, ensuring optimum
management of the existing resource and broadening the scope of economic opportunities.
Special emphasis is given to the marginalized communities such as women in need and fisher
folk.

Self Help Groups (SHGs)


The Foundation continues to promote, nurture and capacitate a number of SHGs for organizing
Women/Youth/Senior citizen and inculcate a savings habit. Continuous efforts are undertaken
for the capacity building of these SHGs, to increase their ability to function independently with
minimum support from outside. These SHGs are formed with the objective of empowering local
communities which will enable them to take decisions concerning their own economic
development. The groups are trained on planning, book keeping, financial management and
conflict management. Regular trainings and exposure visits to other SHG initiatives are
undertaken to encourage self-reliance and sustainability.

Village Development Committees (VDCs)


To smoothen the processes for various developmental works in the villages, village development
committees with representation of people from all the communities are formed. They regularly
meet to plan, implement and monitor the activities undertaken and mitigate any risks posed.

Enhancing employability of youth


AF organises regular courses on vocational training to equip the local communities, youths in
particular to develop competencies and improve their employability within the Adani group or
with the other industries in the vicinity or elsewhere too. For example in Mundra, considering the
future manpower requirements at the Mundra port and other ancillary industries coming up in the

Kutch region, the AF initiated training courses for English speaking, Light Motor Vehicle
(LMV), Heavy Motor Vehicle (HMV), Automobile repairing and so on. The trainees are paid a
stipend and the training is provided by the Technical Department of Adani Group. Consistent
efforts are made towards updating the training curriculum and developing a cadre of master
trainers who are instrumental in transfer of knowledge and skills to the aspiring trainees. For this,
the Foundation has set up “Adani Skill Development Centre” (ASDC) and also the supportive
Institutional Management Committee for various Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) in Gujarat
and Maharashtra.

Skill development training for traditional occupations and Entrepreneurship


development training
The Foundation organizes development and dissemination of appropriate technologies and
provides support in promoting micro irrigation systems, like drip irrigation and innovative
farming techniques to improve productivity while ensuring efficient water, land, and energy
management. To facilitate employment and income generation, various skill-based trainings are
organised for rural men and women. This includes training for rural entrepreneurship and small-
scale business and encouraging women to become self-dependent. AF organizes various skill-
based trainings for the rural youth and women to facilitate employment and generate income.
Training for garment-making, beautician course, leather bag making, mason work, mobile
repairing work etc. are few examples.

Income generation support A one-time economic support is provided to marginalised groups


like widows, persons with disability, and fisher folk community, in the form of seed money or
one-time equipment/material support. The amount ranges up to Rs. 10,000 and is used to either
complement or to initiate an income generating avenue. Support is given to either individuals or
to a group of individuals to undertake some economically viable income generating
activity. Individuals have received support for buying hand carts for selling vegetables, to stock
up their shops, for poultry farming, buying livestock, setting up a flour mill etc. Under group
income generating activity, support has been extended to set up Fat Testing Machine in the Milk
Cooperatives, to start vermi-composting units managed by women SHGs, chapatti-making units
to cater to the Adani canteens and so on.

Support to Traditional Artisan
Kutch, culturally-rich district, is a drought-prone area situated on the border of Pakistan in
Gujarat state, India. A great range of ethnic communities live in the region, most maintaining
traditional dress and crafts of many sorts, including weaving, dyeing, printing, bandhani (tie-
dye), embroidery, leather work, pottery, woodwork, and metalwork. Originally, crafts existed
integrated into local social systems. However, over a few decades the traditional crafts have
experienced a sea-change. Commercialization and consumerism have had their toll on traditional
craft forms. To preserve and sustain the unique craft forms of the region, the artisans are
technically trained to upgrade their skills and contemporize the traditional motifs to increase
market acceptability. Scholarships are provided to youngsters of the artisan families to undertake
informal education by attending the design school facilitated by Kala Raksha Trust, a grassroots
social enterprise, dedicated to preservation of traditional arts.

Concept Design Competition for Corporate Gift


The graduates of the Kala Raksha Vidyalaya and artisans from the area are provided with a
platform to explore new market avenue for corporate gifts. AF organizes an exhibition-cum-sale
so as to support and create a market for the various traditional handicraft items that can be
promoted as corporate gifts. Above mentioned competitions are organized on a regular basis,
providing support for awareness on Corporate Gifts, incidental and travel expenses, as well as
full payment for samples.

Fisher Folk Amenities


The Foundation extends special support to the fisher folk community along the coastal zones in
Mundra, Dahej and Hazira by engaging them in various activities which include providing
amenities like sanitation facilities, support schools, approach roads, cycles to school going
children, fish lending sheds etc. Under this, need-based equipment support is also extended.
Support for providing basic amenities to the Fisher folk Vasahats (Settlements), training for
livelihood and insurance programme is also provided. Support is extended up to Rs. 10,000 to
help them purchase various fishing equipments like nets, cycles, iceboxes, anchors, weighing
scales.

Social Greening Initiatives
Several activities are promoted to help in protecting Nature and strengthen the symbiotic
relationship of human beings and the natural environment.

Drip Irrigation Project


To bring more and more land under drip irrigation at villages in Mundra, Gujarat, facilitate high
crop productivity with limited water resources, and reduce weeding requirements, drip irrigation
systems are encouraged among farmers.Besides the 50% subsidy given by the Government, an
additional 25% subsidy is also contributed by the Foundation with technical support till the
micro irrigation becomes popular and well accepted by the community. At other sites, drip-
irrigation is propagated amongst farmers.

Organic Manure
Demonstration of organic manure preparation has been done to motivate the cattle owning
communities to undertake the innovative activity as an income generating and greening
initiative.

Social Forestry
In order to create a green belt and contribute towards preserving and protecting the environment,
tree plantation under social forestry program has been initiated. Public places like schools,
temples, roadside and open spaces in the villages have been identified as plantation sites.

Mangroves Nursery Plantation


As one of the unique endeavors for alternative livelihood during the off season of fishing
community, mangroves plantation has been initiated. With extensive technical assistance from
the Horticulture department of APSEZ, the Foundation has motivated and given 22 Hectares
of Mangrove plantation work to Fisher folk Group. The pilot project was for a total of 780 Man
days (Rs. 150 per day per person) in the year 2011-2012 and during the year 2012-2013, the

plantation work was for 100 hectares giving employment of more than 6943 Man days with daily
wages increased to Rs. 200 per day per person. Thanks to the process of plantation work, around
100 families from Fisher folk Community were benefited.

Animal Husbandry
• Cattle Camps: To prevent diseases amongst the cattle, seasonal immunization and timely
care is extended to the livestock by organising cattle camps.
• Construction of Gamaan (Cattle Sheds): To provide healthy and hygienic environment to
the cattle and to accommodate a large number of cattle in limited but safe space; to save
fodder expenses and reduce water wastage, Gamaans are constructed with adequate
participation of the village community.
• Fodder Support: During the dry summer months, when the livestock is affected by lack of
adequate fodder in the drought prone areas of Kutch, support is extended to the farmers
and cattle owners to ensure access to fodder for their livestock.
• Awareness meetings and exposure visits: To create awareness on various scientific
methods and techniques for cattle care/breeding, agriculture, crops, irrigation etc., various
awareness meetings are undertaken and exposure visits are organised to Krishi Vigyan
Kendra, NGOs having expertise, and model farms.

Insurance Service: Janashree Bima Yojana


The members of the fisher folk community face extreme risks to lives and livelihood due to the
uncertainties that characterise the fishing profession. Secondly, the people do not have the habit
of saving for future crises or opportunities, due to lack of education. In the case of a financial
emergency, there is no source of support from within the community, thereby forcing them to
depend heavily on the moneylenders who charge high interest rates or they have to sell their
assets. Either way, it is difficult for them to cope with the personal crisis and break the vicious
cycle of debt and poverty. To cover the risks faced by the fisher folk communities, and to ensure
that their livelihoods are secured, a life insurance protection is provided to the fisher folk
community by the Foundation. The insurance cover is available to below or marginally above

poverty line families in the age group 18 to 59. Insurance premium of Rs. 200 per annum is
shared equally between the Government and the Foundation with 50:50 ratio. Insurance
company compensates the insured person as under- 1. Rs. 30,000 in case of natural death 2. Rs.
75,000 in case of accidental death and 3. Rs. 37,500 in case of disablement. Insurance company
also advances scholarship of Rs. 1200 per annum for upto two children studying in standard 9th
to 12th and ITI of insured person.

Rural Infrastructure Development:

Building rural India through Infrastructure Development

Developing the rural infrastructure has a direct effect on economic growth and wellness of an
area. With the vision to change the face of the rural communities where the group operates, the
Foundation has developed rural infrastructures such as approach roads, school buildings, health
care facilities, recreational zones like garden, sports ground and water storage tanks. It has
particularly focused on developing and harvesting water resources in dry areas such as pond
deepening, hand pumps in schools etc.
The Foundation upholds the principle of decisive participation of the communities. To ensure
that the infrastructure development programs are firmly footed and responsive to the actual needs
of the people, the micro planning processes were undertaken along with the active participation
of the community. There is adequate representation of people in the form of institutions like
Village Development Committees. Participation of the VDCs was sought in delineating the
scope of the projects planned, consensus and approval of the community for plans drawn, and for
ensuring timely implementation of the projects. The Foundation works closely with the local
Gram Panchayats to undertake the projects in a transparent and accountable manner towards
accomplishment.

Water Conservation:
With an objectiv of preserving rainwater, reducing the impact of salinity, recharging the ground
water and facilitating agricultural activities, several water conservation structures have been
constructed with the active involvement of the local community.

Pond Deepening is assisted by the Foundation to increase the capacity of the village ponds.
Construction of Check Dams were done to reduce erosion and gullying, lower the speed of water
flow, help in storing the surface water for use, both during and after the monsoon. They also help
in ground water recharge and in raising the water table in the area.

Rural Drainage Project:


To create clean and hygienic environment, proper drainage facility is essential. In partnership
with WASMO, the Foundation has provided drainage systems in 16 villages including pipeline
network and sewage treatment plants at Mundra, Gujarat.

Other Infrastructure Projects:


Under cluster development programme, series of developmental works have been undertaken
like building community halls, bus stops, garden and panchvati development, crematorium
upgrading, construction of gaaman (cattle shed), rural clinics, entrance gates, cricket pitch,
pavilion, store rooms. The Foundation’s cluster based approach invites full participation of the
respective stakeholders. The Cluster Development Advisory Committee (CDAC) comprises of
the Sarpanch, Panchayat members, village representatives, CEO of AF and cluster coordinator.
The activities to be undertaken are recommended and approved by the CDAC.

Solar Street Lights: Harnessing the solar power and setting up solar street lights has been seen
as an initiative to promote the use of renewable energy technology to meet the energy
requirements of the community.

School Infrastructure Development:


Different activities are undertaken to develop and strengthen the school infrastructure in the form
of additional rooms, adequate sanitation facility for boys and girls, multipurpose activity halls,
construction of boundary walls, computer rooms, repairing activity, construction of water tanks,
setting up of water purification plants in schools, development of basic amenities in the school
premises and so on.

Adani Power
Sustainability is the key to all the projects designed and implemented at Adani. Adani Power
has developed in house capability to assess the environmental impacts of power projects
over their life cycle and address all such aspects at the project development stage itself. The
environmental aspects are considered important at all stages from conceptualisation to
project delivery, such as site selection, technology selection, engineering, layout planning,
vendor’s selection, material procurement, construction and commissioning. The completed
projects that are handed over to the user are not only environmentally compliant today, but
have the in-built facilities to upgrade to meet the environmental challenges in the future.
Adani Power has also been working for resource conservation and reduction of greenhouse
gases to address the climate change. Most of the projects developed use supercritical
technology to reduce fossil fuel consumption and consequent greenhouse gases generation.

The campaign, aims at focusing attention on protecting children against a number of vaccine
preventable deadly diseases, including polio, and helps spread awareness among the community
on the need to ensure Routine Immunization and polio campaign doses.
Adani and the Times of India have partnered with ‘India Unite To End Polio Now’, an Aidmatrix
Foundation and UNICEF initiative, to roll out ‘Nurturing Trees, Nurturing Lives’ campaign with
National Service Scheme (NSS) volunteers and school students. Over 500 educational
institutions across the country are expected to participate in the yearlong campaign. Around
50,000 saplings are to be planted in 10 states by youth and children who would pledge to spread
awareness on Routine Immunization vaccines and polio immunization. “The youth has the
