Author Block: A, B, S. Joshi, MIT PUNE Abstract: Objectives/Scope: The objective is to analyse the thermal stresses generated in a steam injected casing in a steam injected well. In steam injected wells high pressure steam is injected at 550 °F and 1125 psi. The increase in temperature causes the casing to expand resulting in tensile stresses and tensile damage during heating and cooling cycle, but the casing expansion is Usually restricted in the cement layer and the rock strata. The stress generated in the casing, cement and the rock is analyzed in simulation software. The simulation showed that the stress generated in the cement layer around the casing shoe region is, of high magnitude. The stress generated in the production casing is also high since there is no support from the previous casing. Increasing the depth of the intermediate casing resulted in reduced stress in the production casing, Methods, Procedures, Process: First step is to check the design criterion for pressure condition at the inlet condition and the outlet condition assuming that the casing as a cylinder, Then the model of the casing-cement-rock is created in workbench using Design modeller, Each partis individually created and material property is assigned. Final assembly is done before meshing. The model is then simulated in thermal stress modeller in Ansys. Different grades of steel are analysed for the thermal stress eg. J55 and P110 and their performance under these thermal conditions are compared. Results, Observations, Conclusions: The results obtained shows that thermal expansion due to the steam injection causes significant amount of stresses generated at the shoe of each casing, It is mainly because of lesser support by the previous casing. As the simulation was performed for J§5 and P110, P110 showed lesser amount stresses generated compared to J55 because of high yield strength. The von misses stress is also found out for each casing garde Novel/Additive Information: This analysis can be used in selecting different grades of casing for different steam injection condition and there by choosing the optimum grade for specific well and steam injection condition.
