REVISION:

The following equation shows the precipitation of silver

chloride.

Ag+ (aq) + Cl- (aq)à AgCl (s) ΔH = -78 kJ mol-1

Mira Filzah dissolved 25 cm3 of 0.5 mol dm-3 of silver

nitrate solution and 25 cm3 of 0.2 mol dm-3 magnesium
chloride solution in a beaker. What is the amount of heat
released in this reaction?
2AgNO3 (aq) + MgCl2 (aq) 2AgCl (s) + Mg(NO3)2 (aq)

No of moles of AgNO3 = (25 X 0.5) / 1000 = 0.0125 mol

No of moles of AgNO3 = (25 X 0.5) / 1000 = 0.0125 mol

No of moles of MgCl2 = (25 X 0.2) / 1000 = 0.005 mol (limiting reactant)

From the equation;

2 mol of AgNO3 react with 1 mol of MgCl2 to produce 2 mol of AgCl

Therefore;
mol of AgNO3 react with 0.005 mol of MgCl2 to produce
0.010
mol of AgCl
0.010

Heat released, Q = n X ΔH X 1000

= 0.010 X 78 X 1000
= 780 J
