Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation

INTRODUCTION

•Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is a

life saving technique useful in many
emergencies , including heart attack or near
drowning , in which someone’s breathing or
heart beat has stopped .
DEFINITION

•Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation is a
technique of basic life support for
oxygenating the brain and heart until
appropriate , definitive medical treatment
can restore normal heart and ventilator
action .
PURPOSES
• To maintain an open and clear airway (A)
• To maintain breathing by external ventilation (B)
• To maintain blood circulation by external cardiac massages
(C)
• To save life of the patient
• To provide basic life support till medical and advanced life
support arrives .
INDICATIONS
Cardiac Arrest
• Ventricular Fibrillation (VF)
• Ventricular Tachycardia (VT)
• Asystole
• Pulse less electrical activity
Respiratory Arrest
• Drowning
• Stroke
• Foreign body in throat
• Smoke inhalation
• Drug overdose
• Suffocation
• Accident , injury
• Coma
• Epiglottis paralysis
Chain Of Survival
Effective Chest
Compressions
Airway and ventilation
Ventilation 30:2
Once airway secured – 10 breaths per
minute
Defibrillation
• After VT/VF, cardiac out put ceases
• After 3 minutes – cerebral hypoxic injury
• Probability of successful defibrillation declines
rapidly with time
• Every minute passes – mortality 10 – 12 %
Shockable rhythm
• Immediate defibrillation
• Restart CPR without delay
• 3 shocks
• After third shock- IV/IO Adrenaline 1mg, Amiodarone
300mg
• Further adrenaline 1mg in alternative cycles
Non Shockable Rhythm

• 2 minute CPR 30:2

• Adrenaline 1mg as soon as the IV/IO access is
obtained
• Repeat at alternative cycles
