Philosophy of Education

A teacher’s focus is to meet the needs of their students. The students are the center of the
classroom, the reason why the classroom exists. Every lesson a teacher is teaching should be
prepared with their student's learning abilities and TEKS in mind. Everyone deserves to have an
education and the opportunity to learn regardless of disability. I believe students learn more
effectively when they have a supportive teacher.

As a teacher, I will take time to build relationships with with my students from the
beginning of the year. It gives students the opportunity to get to know what kind of teacher I am
as well as the opportunity to know what kind of student they are. This opens the possibility to
gain trust from the student. The relationships within my classroom will help me better support by
students as I begin to discover each student’s weakness and strengths. To be a supportive teacher
I am aware of these areas academically, socially, emotionally, mentally, and physically. I am
aware of the gaps my students have. I desire to see all my students achieve their own success by
closing those gaps and getting them where they need to be. My attention to their needs will help
me know where to start as I begin to support them on their journey of learning.

My response to my students will show them I believe in them. In responding to my

student’s needs, I will create a classroom environment that is a safe space to students. Students
learn best when they know they are safe. In supporting my students, I will design the layout of
the classroom based on the needs of my students. In designing a safe classroom environment,
students will have the opportunity to find their voice in the class by being apart of it, cater to
their learning styles as I teach curriculum, so students get the best out of it. Students will be able
to come up with the classroom commitments, voice their opinion during classroom meetings, and
gain confidence in their voice. This will help them build confidence within themselves.

Every student does not learn the same. I cannot teach the curriculum the same way to all
my students and expect them to all get it. I must differentiate my lesson to meet the different
learning styles and abilities in the class. Differentiation helps bridge the gaps and cater to the
student’s needs. A student becomes more interested when they know they are your focus.

Education is a continual learning process where students gain skills and abilities,
education can shift the focus of students throughout many different perspectives. Education helps
students build upon their knowledge. The support I show my class matter because every moment
I have with these students can determine their future outcome in life.

Classroom Set Up

Classroom Rules/Norms
RUNNINGHEAD: CLASSROOMMANAGEMENT Garcia 4

Classroom rules and norms are a part of every classroom culture. I want to create a

classroom culture that is student-centered rather than teacher centered. On the first day of class, I

will create a social contract with my students on the rules they would like to have for our

classroom. These rules would be based on various students’ beliefs and commonality. As a class

we will have no more than five rules because a shorter list of rules is easier for students to follow

and remember. Most of the rules the students come up with will fall into the similar categories.

As a class we can narrow our list of rules into a shorter list. Some of the rules our class might

come up with would include be respectful of others and their property, listen to the teacher,

always do your best, be positive, raise your hand to speak, etc.

The classroom rules will be communicated to all parties that impact/influence the

classroom. The rules of the classroom will have been communicated to the students because they

took part in the process of creating the rules for the class. The whole class is held responsible and

accountable for their actions because they designed the rules for the class. They have committed

to these rules, are held accountable, and hold each other accountable. I understand that not all

students will be involved or want to be aware of what is going on in the classroom, and I

understand some parents want to have that awareness. The rules of my classroom will be

communicated to the families in my class by sending them a copy of the rules. I would then

explain each rule and the process in which the students came up with to design them. I would

email, send a physical copy home, and post it on our classroom website. I would explain each

commitment and how it holds each student accountable for creating a safe environment. The

rules would be communicated to administrators by email with an explanation for our rules and

possible classroom observations.

Classroom Procedures
RUNNINGHEAD: CLASSROOMMANAGEMENT Garcia 5

Effective classroom management not only has rules in place but procedures to.

Classroom procedures help students know what to do and when its appropriate to do them.

Procedures help keep students aligned with what’s going on in the classroom. In my classroom I

will have procedures in line for my students and maintain order within the class. It is the

teacher’s responsibility to effectively communicate and teach students procedures.

At the beginning of every class period, I will follow the procedure by greeting my

students as they come into my classroom. I would ask them quietly to come in, gather their

materials they need for my class, and complete their warmup on the board. If a student finishes

their warmup early, I would ask them to write any questions they may have for me regarding any

misunderstandings they are having within the material. At the end of the class, the last ten will

begin to wrap up the class. Students will have five minutes to complete their exit ticket;

reflection. This time of reflection will be for students to reflect on what they learned, understand,

or don’t understand yet. After they complete their exit ticket, they are to turn it in, put materials

away, and return to their sit. If most students are finished with the exit ticket, I will make

announcements and ask if anyone ask any questions within the last five minutes of class.

Students will wait for the bell by remaining seated in their desk.

In order to smoothly transition from one activity to another, I will have put a classroom

agenda on the board. The agenda will be discussed with the students so they know what will take

place in today’s class. This will help me know what is coming up next and stay on task. In time

of transitional periods, the use of a timer will help my students and I stay on track. The timer and

agenda help everyone get focused on what’s going on or coming up next.

Interruptions will happen in the classroom. I will plan for classroom interruptions by having

a list of procedures I will follow. I will engage eye contact with the student and let them know I
RUNNINGHEAD: CLASSROOMMANAGEMENT Garcia 6

am aware of what they are doing. The model I plan to use is the Mendler and Curwin’s four

generic consequence model. The model consists of reminding the student of the rule, giving a

warning, developing an action plan for their behavior, and practicing behavior. A reminder of the

rule will be a visual reminder by making eye contact with students and looking at the social

contract. I would come up to the student and tell them this is there warning or pull them a side. If

interruptions escalate from the same student, pull this student aside and talk them privately on

how we can develop a plan of action for their behavior. I would have another meeting with the

student privately on practicing behavior.

Instructional strategies that have their own procedures I would use in the classroom would be

modeling for my students, group collaboration, and classroom discussion. Modeling has its own

procedures by asking the students to watch me first to see how I do it. Once they see me do it, I

would ask them to join me in solving the problem, I would have them do it on their own. Group

collaboration will have its own procedures on what it looks like and how it works. Before the

class enters a time of classroom discussions, the procedures of how this kind of discussion will

go and look like will be addressed with my class.

Differentiation for Special Populations (learning disabilities, ESL, gifted and talented, etc.)

A classroom room is made of many different students from all cultures and backgrounds.

Every student has their own learning style and certain needs that must be met to learn

successfully. Students who fall within the special populations group should not be defined by

their ability only, but as a student first. In my classroom, I want to be able to see the uniqueness

each student brings. I will start by building relationships with my students and gain their trust. I

will show my students how serious I am by meeting their needs. I will do research on how I can

close learning gaps and get them to where they need to be. I will meet with other staff and
RUNNINGHEAD: CLASSROOMMANAGEMENT Garcia 7

faculty that have experience with working with this group. Their advice will help me respond in

an effective way to these students in and outside the classroom.

Student Roles in Classroom Management

Students are the center of the classroom. The reason why the classroom exists. I would

have the students get involved by telling them this is their classroom and what they want to gain

from their time here depends on them. Day one I let them know they have a voice in the

classroom by creating a social contract for the class. I will build on this by building relationships

with them. I will encourage them to be leaders within their classroom. I will have classroom jobs

for my students to be apart of and get involved in. All jobs will teach students to be responsible

for the actions and making sure they get their job done. I would encourage student involvement

and connectedness by having classroom meetings.

Conclusion

In conclusion, a classroom management plan should be thoroughly thought out by the

teacher. A teacher’s considerations help develop a classroom management plan for their class.

The philosophy of education a teacher has is evident in their classroom plan. My teaching

philosophy reflects the community I inspire to build in my class and create with my students.
