1. A woman at an airport is towing her 20-kg suitcase at constant speed by pulling on a strap at an angle of θ above the horizontal.

She pulls on
the strap with a 30-N force, and the frictional force on the suitcase is 15 N. What angle does the strap make with the horizontal?

5. The figure shows a device for applying a traction force T to the leg. (The small open circles are ideal fixed pulleys.) What is the force T if all
parts are stationary?

6. An airplane moving at a constant velocity is leaking oil out the bottom of the plane in a steady stream. Ignoring air drag (not very realistic), what is the
shape of the stream of oil as viewed from the ground?

8. A 0.15 kg baseball, with a momentum of 6.0 kg-m/s is hit with a bat, and flies off in the opposite direction. The bat imparts an impulse of 10 kg-m/s to the baseball.
The bat and ball are in contact for 0.002 s. What is the magnitude of the average force exerted on the baseball by the bat during the time they are in contact?

9. Alexander takes his sled to the top of a hemispherical hill. Starting from rest, he sleds down the hill. At what value of the angle θ does
he become airborne? You may neglect friction.

11. A 50 kg skier goes down an incline, starting at a height of 10 m above the level field. Initially, she pushes off with a speed of 1 m/s (down the slope), and her speed
has increased to 9 m/s at the bottom of the incline. How much energy is dissipated by friction in this process?

12. A 1 kg ball sits at rest on a table. A 3 kg ball is heading towards the stationary ball with a speed of 2 m/s. The balls collide head on and stick together. How much
kinetic energy is dissipated in the process.

13. Two masses are on top of plane inclined at 30o, which is 12 m high and 24 m long, as sketched. Mass A falls straight down the 12 m drop, and
mass B slides down the ramp. Both masses start from rest. Just before hitting the ground, mass A has speed sA, and mass B has speed sB. Find
the ratio sA/sB. Neglect friction.

14. The 1290 kg DeLorean driven by Christopher Lloyd in the 1985 scifi classic “Back to the Future” accelerates from zero to 4700 m/s (10,500 mph) in 5.0 seconds.
What is the average power required for this performance?

15. Two boys sitting at opposite ends of a canoe toss a baseball back and forth. What effect will this have on the canoe? Neglect all frictional forces.

16. Two baby buggies are moving toward a head-on collision on level ground. The first buggy has a mass of 20 kg and is moving at a speed of 3 m/s. The second buggy
has a mass of 15 kg and is moving at a speed of 5 m/s. The buggies are each equipped with rugged rubber bumpers that insure the collision is perfectly elastic. Three
seconds after the collision, the distance between the buggies is closest to… (You may neglect friction.)

18. A 4.0-kg block is dragged over a rough horizontal surface by a constant force of 20 N as shown. The speed of the block increases from 3.0 m/s to 5.0 m/s in a
displacement of 5.0 m. What is the magnitude of the work done by the friction force during this displacement?

19. A mass m is attached to a spring, and the system sits on a frictionless table. The spring is compressed from its
unstressed position by a distance L. Then the mass is released with zero initial velocity. What is the speed of the ball when
it again reaches the unstressed position? The spring has spring constant k. Give your answer in terms of k, m, and L.

20. An object moving along the x axis is acted upon by a force Fx that varies with position as shown. How much work is
done by this force as the object moves from x = 2 m to x = 8 m?
