Today’s Celebration of a Mother’s Unconditional Love

zia10/17/19

It was a cold breezy night; a night that seemed to be just an ordinary one – common and nothing
special. It was a night thought to pass and another will come the next day. Everyone did their work
casually. Everyone thought that it was a night unworthy to remember. But this night was no ordinary
for Norie, a woman who cannot identify accurately her own age. It was twenty-five years ago when
she risked her own life to give one to her third offspring. God may have been so great and merciful
that night to bless her with formidable courage to combat against death. And she did it!

Being a mother is not new to Norie. This does not faze her anymore. But the feeling of bearing a child
for the third time and the thought to mother again a new born baby entails extreme excitement and
enthusiasm for her. The feeling is indeed surreal – inexplicable and indescribable!

Just like any other mother, Norie did every possible way to make her children feel loved. She gave
whatever makes her children happy from giving them material things like toys to an unconditional
mother’s comfort. She was determined to do so. She was truly altruistic to think of others’ enjoyment
first before thinking of hers. Despite the struggles life gave, she found ways to provide them a life
better than what she had when she was her children’s age. She wanted to give a bountiful life to her
children.

It was still vivid and clear to her third-born child how hands-on she was to him. She accompanied him
to his first day of stepping in to school. She was also the one who bought school materials and
uniforms for him. In the morning, she diligently bathed him with lukewarm water and ironed carefully
his clothes using the charcoal-fuelled iron. All these she did to make him presentable and pleasing to
others. She did not feel any exhaustion or weariness in doing these daily. For her, it was an
accomplishment that she will never get tired of doing.

One thing that her third-born child cannot forget was when he was on his second grade and joined a
folk dance presentation in school. It was his first time to take part in school activities like this; thus,
he was full of excitement to it. But he didn’t have any costume to wear; however, his mother assured
him to have one. Early in the morning, the child saw how his mother ventured to a nearby barrio to
look for some costume to borrow. She had not taken her bath yet. She had not eaten her breakfast, too.
She was alone yet her face showed smile which implied assurance that her son will have something to
wear on his special day. Unfortunately, she returned with nothing yet her face still showed a beaming
smile that still implied an assurance that her son will surely have the clothing he expected. She then
dressed her child and went into the market still early in the morning to buy him his own costume. Her
face was still glowing with amiable expression. Her eyes even glittered to see how her son became
very much elated and ecstatic to be in his newly-bought attire for the school program. They were both
assured now and then she sent him to school that same day. The smile in her face did not fade while
she stood at the gate and kept her eyes to her son who was walking gaily inside the school premises in
his newly bought costume. She was again fulfilled and relieved that her son won’t have any worry to
think of.

Up until now, the third-born child still feels how her mother would do everything for him. From
finding ways for him to continue his studies despite financial instability to keeping and securing him
the best she could give. For Norie, it’s not a burden for her to do these things. She does things not
because she needs and must do it but because she loves her children so much that she wants to assure
herself that they may not be living a lavish life but at least a comfortable one.

For some, Norie may like be any other mother. But for her children, she is an extraordinary one! She
is a God’s grace to them. She is their comfort zone when things seem uncertain. She turns impossible
things possible. And for Norie, nothing is difficult for her children. Some things may seem
challenging for her to achieve but she is determined to do whatever it takes to give her children the
best that she knows.
It was twenty-five years ago, a night was casual for some folks but it had become a night worth
remembering for Norie. It was the night when she delivered her third-born child in this world. The
night of 17th of this month was special for her.

At present, this day might have become casual for the woman who is not certain of her age; indeed,
she would not remember that this day was one of the days that she bore a child. But for her third-born
child, it’s definitely NOT! This day will be forever special to him until his last breath; this day has
become a celebration of how his mother risked her life to death just to give him this special thing
called “life”.

God was really so great and merciful that night to bless her with formidable courage to combat against
death. And she did it! She bore a child during a cold breezy night; a night that seemed to be just an
ordinary one – common and nothing special. It was a night thought to pass and another will come the
next day. Everyone did their work casually. Everyone thought that it was a night unworthy to
remember. But this night was no ordinary for Norie. It was twenty-five years ago when she risked her
own life to give one to…ME!
