“Straight” and its Georgian equivalent

English is an analytical language, whereas Georgian is a synthetic one. They bear a lot

of differences in their lexical systems. Comparative lexicology of English and Georgian

tackles this topic deeper.

we are going to discuss a single comparison on the example of the word “straight”,

whose semantic equivalent in the Georgian language is the word “სწორი”. We are going to

outline similarities and differences between these two words.

In Georgian language the word “straight” has only one meaning and it is „სწორი“.

But in English language it has different equivalents. For example” სწორი ქუჩა - “straight

street”, but if we want to say „სწორი პასუხი“, we should change word “straight” into

“correct” and we will say “correct answer”. Also we should say regular features, which mean

“სწორი ნაკვთები“.

As we can see, even though in the two languages these words are accepted as each

other’s equivalents, their meanings and usage are not entirely the same. If we research any

other word, we will see that the situation is similar.
