Social Studies--2018
Student: Makayla Kujawa
Grade Level: Kindergarten

LESSON RATIONALE:
This lesson will provide students the experience to use their senses to determine different objects and
how every person may interpret items in a different way.

READINESS:
I. Goals/Objectives/Standard(s):
A. Goal:
• Students will use their senses to determine objects.
B. Objectives:
• Students will use senses to discover objects.
• Students will identify and describe the five senses.
• Students will compare and contrast with one another their discoveries.

C. Standards:
IAS: K.PS.1: Plan and conduct an investigation using all senses to describe and classify different kinds of
objects by their composition and physical properties. Explain these choices to others and generate
questions about the objects.

Content connector: K.PS.1.a: Use all senses to explore and describe different kinds of objects.

II. Management Plan

a. Materials:
• Bowls
• Aluminum foil with holes poked in it
• Various foods (dill, vinegar, lemon, grapes, pineapple)
• Mint extract
• Handouts
• Senses video online song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yOYq35WRM4c)

b. Time: 25-50 minutes (Intro/anticipatory set/discussion-8 mins, group WS-10 mins,

stations rotation/independent sheet- 25 mins, closure-3-5 mins)
c. Space: Station/ Desks
d. Behavior: Will use classroom teacher’s behavior system for consistency. During stations
expectations will be clearly stated to come to each station and sit down and begin when the
timer starts. This class specifically tends to get chatty so I will use call out reminders if
students get too loud, from how their classroom operates they know they will flip a card if
they are too loud or not doing what they’re supposed to. Consequences for not following
directions and being asked too many times will result in students being sent to their desk
with supplies to finish assignments there. I will still make sure they get to answer
discussion questions with someone whether it be a peer or teacher to make sure learning is
not missed but they no longer will get to travel with their group.

III. Adaptation to Individual Differences and Diverse Learners:

Indiana Wesleyan University

Social Studies--2018
• This class specifically needs clear instruction, because of this I will make sure to have our plan
mapped out for them to see and anticipate what will be next.
• A lot of my students here struggle with redirection, because of this I will make it a point to be
constantly talking with students during lesson and calling on those who seem to be zoning out to
regain their attention and by visiting each station.
• I plan to add quite a few brain breaks throughout instruction time, can be majority of movements,
simple as stand and touch toes, reach up, spin around then sit, however this lesson requires quite
a bit of rotating around the room.

PLAN FOR INSTRUCTION:

IV. Anticipatory Set:

“Good morning! We are going to begin by talking about our senses! Does anybody know how many senses
we have? Can somebody name them all? Great job! Now we are going to watch and listen to this song
about our senses!” Students will begin by naming 5 senses (if possible) then go into time of watching
“Senses Song” by Have fun teaching https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yOYq35WRM4c . “Go ahead and
turn to your shoulder partner and name one sense and its job!”

V. Purpose: “Today, we are learning about how we all have 5 senses, however we don’t all get the same
results from using the same sense, we are going to discover different smells and tastes and
compare how we all have slightly different senses.”

VI. Lesson Presentation (Input/Output)

• After anticipatory set, students will participate in discussion of 5 senses with shoulder
partner and answer what one of the senses is and what it does for us. “Ok! I need one
person from each pair to share what sense they said and the job it does for us!”
• Students will then get into 5 groups, from here each group will be assigned a sense and
work on the worksheet to go along with that sense. Review the rules for group work
time: 1) Talk to your group about the topic 2) Listen to others 3) Take turns *Teacher
will walk around during this time to check on groups and ask questions about why the
groups have chosen to draw and write about what they did*

• One person from each group will present what they came up with.

• Next it will be stations time. How these stations will work is students will travel as a
group to teacher and experience each simulation. First students will smell 3 items, the
dill, vinegar, and lemon through the holes in the foil, they will then record what they
think each scent was on a recording sheet. Then students will close their eyes and tastes
a piece of grape that id covered in mint extract, then taste a piece of pineapple. Students
will again record what it is they think they were tasting. This will happen 5 times with
the 5 senses groups. While students are experiencing this station the rest of the class
will be independently working on the next activity.
• The independent worksheet is My Five Senses. “While you are waiting to come see me
at the station you will be working on this sheet by yourself at your desk. What we are
going to do is cut out all the pictures below and match each sense to what it would do
with the pictures on the right. If you finish early then I want you to write a sentence
about what sense you think you use the most and why.”

• Once whole group is back together go into time of discussing what each student wrote
on their recording sheet. “So, I want to hear what are some things you guys wrote down
that you smelled in the first three cups?” *Take 2-3 responses* “What are some ideas
you wrote down for the two things you tasted?” *Take 2-3 responses*

VII.Check for understanding.

• Independent worksheet at desk
• Proof from recording sheet
• Discussion questions during intro
• Take home sheet and picture proof

VIII. Review learning outcomes / Closure –

“Now I love how investigative you were by using your senses. Notice how so many of you had different
answers for what you smelled and what you tasted? This is because even though we all have the
same five senses, they all work differently than each other’s. You each used different senses
together to figure out the answer, some of you relied only on your tastes which was difficult to be
sure, others of you might’ve relied on your smell which was tricky when the fruit was covered in a
stronger smell, and some of you may have used your touch and how the fruit felt in your mouth.

This shows us that we need each of our five senses because they work together to discover! Lastly,
you are going to take home this paper and complete it tonight, there are 5 boxes on this paper and
your job is to draw a picture for each of the five senses that you used today! Your parents will then
upload a picture of proof to our website!”

PLAN FOR ASSESSMENT

At the end of the lesson students will receive a piece of paper to take home, on it they are to draw a
picture for each sense in the box, when they are finished have parents upload to class website!

REFLECTION AND POST-LESSON ANALYSIS

(CAEP K-6 3.b)
1. How many students achieved the lesson objective(s)? For those who did not, why not?
2. What were my strengths and weaknesses?
3. How should I alter this lesson?
4. How would I pace it differently?
5. Were all students actively participating? If not, why not?
6. What adjustments did I make to reach varied learning styles and ability levels?
7. What is one way to get students thinking about their senses outside of the classroom?
8. How could this lesson be differentiated for students who do not possess one of the senses (ie.
sight)?
